Sabah looking to harness ocean's thermal energy in Tawau waters, says Hajiji
He said harnessing ocean thermal energy was part of the state's Blue Economy goals under the Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda.
"In addition, the Sabah Biodiversity Centre and Yayasan Petronas, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), are also actively carrying out the Seaweed Mapping Project across Sabah," he said in his speech at the World Biodiversity Day celebrations at the Dewan Arena Belia in Semporna,Thursday (July 24).
In line with the focus on exploring, promoting, and supporting the Blue Economy, Hajiji gave his assurance that the state government will ensure that tourism activities in Semporna were well-regulated and do not disrupt marine biodiversity but provide benefits and advantages to the people of Sabah.
The Chief Minister said that the approval of the Climate Change and Carbon Governance Enactment 2025 at the recent State Assembly sitting had positioned Sabah as the nation's leader in environmental conservation and resilience against climate change.
He said the implementation of the Enactment would ensure the involvement of Sabah's native community and that their rights are protected through the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure.
"I wish to emphasise that the Sabah State Government is committed to protecting and preserving the state's natural resources, biodiversity and ecosystem," he said in his speech delivered by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan.
He said the celebration's theme, "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development", is meaningful and underscored the crucial roles both elements play in preserving the health of the planet, enhancing human well-being and ensuring a sustainable future.
"This theme is also timely and serves as a reminder to humanity, especially the people of Sabah, not to be complacent when carrying out development activities without considering the sustainability of biodiversity, the well-being of animals, plants, and ecosystems that bring benefits to our lives," he said.
"By ensuring that nature is protected and valued, we not only safeguard biodiversity but also secure economic and social well-being for current and future generations," he said.
He said that the concept aligns with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sabah Biodiversity Strategy 2024–2034. At the same time, today's celebration and theme also reflect the aspirations of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development agenda, which is fundamentally anchored in promoting green practices and supporting sustainable development.
Conservation efforts, however, he said, needed strong support from all quarters, including government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, the local community, and the people of Sabah in general.
He said the state government, on its part, would continue to implement development programmes that emphasise green sustainability by prioritising the responsible use and management of natural resources, as well as ensuring environmental protection, social well-being, and economic growth for future generations.

KOTA KINABALU: The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) supreme council has yet to discuss and collectively agree to endorse the electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan, says Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee. The Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) president said so far, the GRS supreme council had not held a meeting to endorse the electoral pact with Pakatan announced by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Sunday on the sidelines of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah annual general meeting. "There has not been a meeting of the Supreme Council in the last few months. If and when there is a meeting, of course, we will attend. "As for what might happen, it depends. For example, what has been agreed between the GRS chairman and Pakatan? Was anything agreed at all?" Yong asked. Hajiji's announcement of the pact took several of the eight party GRS leaders by surprise. The leaders declined to make any immediate comments, saying they wanted clarification on the matter first. Yong said that Hajiji had discussed the matter with GRS component party presidents but nothing was finalised until approved by the GRS supreme council. He also said it was confusing as Pakatan and Barisan have said that they have finalised seat allocation for the Sabah polls. GRS had shown signs it was keen to go solo but Hajiji had constantly voiced preference to continue working with Pakatan for political stability. GRS and Barisan, who worked together to topple the state government under Warisan-Pakatan government in the September 2020 state polls, have been at loggerheads since Barisan pulled its support for Hajiji in January 2023. Sabah Pakatan gave their backing to GRS for the Hajiji-led government to remain in power.

GRS-PH alliance firm for Sabah polls, 'flip-flop' claims dismissed
Johainizamshah KOTA KINABALU (July 28): Allegations that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is inconsistent and 'one moment wants to go solo, and the next moment doesn't' in its approach to the upcoming 17th State Election have been described as baseless and misleading to the public. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Lamag Division deputy chief Johainizamshah Johari stressed that from the beginning, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor who is also the president of Gagasan Rakyat, has maintained a clear and consistent position to collaborate with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in facing the upcoming state election. 'The issue and claims that the Chief Minister is flip-flopping on his stance are inaccurate. What happened was merely a temporary reaction to the official announcement of cooperation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and PH on May 8 and 9 at the federal level, which was made without specific details involving Sabah. 'At that time, Hajiji merely expressed the possibility that GRS could contest independently if the state's political situation required it. It did not mean rejecting cooperation with PH; rather, it demonstrated openness in making decisions based on Sabah's interests,' he said in a statement on Monday. According to Johainizamshah, the situation became clearer after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's working visit to Tawau on May 11, when the Prime Minister openly expressed his desire for GRS, PH and BN in Sabah to cooperate in the run-up to the state election. 'More importantly, the Prime Minister personally requested Hajiji to lead the coalition's negotiations. This reflects trust and respect for his leadership,' he said. He added that this was further affirmed by Hajiji himself during the 2025 Gagasan Rakyat Annual General Assembly last Sunday, where he clearly stated that Gagasan Rakyat/GRS would work together with PH in the upcoming state election. 'There has not been a single official statement from Hajiji rejecting cooperation with PH. Therefore, the issue of inconsistency or confusion, as claimed by certain quarters — particularly the opposition — is unfounded,' he said. Johainizamshah stressed that the most important thing now is to maintain political stability to ensure continued development in Sabah and that the people benefit from progress. 'We do not want Sabah to become like other resource-rich regions abroad that have failed to uplift their people, such as the Niger Delta in Nigeria, Katanga in Congo, and Chhattisgarh in India — all rich in resources, but their people live in poverty. 'Therefore, we must unite, support the current leadership, and avoid political games that could jeopardise efforts to develop our state,' he said.

Sabah BN leader sees ‘Anwar factor' behind GRS pact with PH

(Wikipedia pic) PETALING JAYA : Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) may have chosen to work with Pakatan Harapan (PH) at the upcoming state polls as the coalition is headed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, says former Sabah chief minister Salleh Said Keruak. The Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) treasurer said GRS, the state's ruling coalition, might want to ensure strong ties with the federal government. 'This aligns with the need to ensure political stability and continued development for Sabah,' he said in a Facebook post. While BN and PH are partners in the unity government at the federal level, BN sits in the opposition in the Sabah legislative assembly. GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said yesterday that his coalition would form an alliance with PH for the upcoming state polls. PH had previously agreed to an electoral pact for the state election with BN. Sabah BN chief Bung Moktar Radin said the coalition would not work with GRS in the state election, and would only consider cooperation after the outcome of the election. Salleh nevertheless said that GRS's decision to work with PH must be respected. 'Undoubtedly, they have their own reasons, and the people will be the judge,' he said. He added that BN had decided to work with PH as the two coalitions were the foundation of the unity government at the federal level. He said cooperation between the two was a 'logical and responsible continuation of that partnership'. 'How PH manages its cooperation with both BN and GRS is not our concern. What matters to us in BN is sincerity in partnership, and our focus remains on strengthening our party on the ground,' he said.
