GRS-PH alliance firm for Sabah polls, 'flip-flop' claims dismissed
KOTA KINABALU (July 28): Allegations that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is inconsistent and 'one moment wants to go solo, and the next moment doesn't' in its approach to the upcoming 17th State
Election have been described as baseless and misleading to the public.
Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Lamag Division deputy chief Johainizamshah Johari stressed that from the beginning, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor who is also the president of Gagasan Rakyat, has maintained a clear and consistent position to collaborate with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in facing the upcoming state election.
'The issue and claims that the Chief Minister is flip-flopping on his stance are inaccurate. What happened was merely a temporary reaction to the official announcement of cooperation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and PH on May 8 and 9 at the federal level, which was made without specific details involving Sabah.
'At that time, Hajiji merely expressed the possibility that GRS could contest independently if the state's political situation required it. It did not mean rejecting cooperation with PH; rather, it demonstrated openness in making decisions based on Sabah's interests,' he said in a statement on Monday.
According to Johainizamshah, the situation became clearer after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's working visit to Tawau on May 11, when the Prime Minister openly expressed his desire for GRS, PH and BN in Sabah to cooperate in the run-up to the state election.
'More importantly, the Prime Minister personally requested Hajiji to lead the coalition's negotiations. This reflects trust and respect for his leadership,' he said.
He added that this was further affirmed by Hajiji himself during the 2025 Gagasan Rakyat Annual General Assembly last Sunday, where he clearly stated that Gagasan Rakyat/GRS would work together with PH in the upcoming state election.
'There has not been a single official statement from Hajiji rejecting cooperation with PH. Therefore, the issue of inconsistency or confusion, as claimed by certain quarters — particularly the opposition — is unfounded,' he said.
Johainizamshah stressed that the most important thing now is to maintain political stability to ensure continued development in Sabah and that the people benefit from progress.
'We do not want Sabah to become like other resource-rich regions abroad that have failed to uplift their people, such as the Niger Delta in Nigeria, Katanga in Congo, and Chhattisgarh in India — all rich in resources, but their people live in poverty.
'Therefore, we must unite, support the current leadership, and avoid political games that could jeopardise efforts to develop our state,' he said.

Govt backbencher, opposition MPs clash during Prime Minister's Question Time in Parliament
KUALA LUMPUR: Tensions flared in the Dewan Rakyat this morning when a government backbencher got into a shouting match with an opposition member of Parliament over Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin's remarks on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). The exchange began when the opposition leader posed a question to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim regarding the 13MP, which was tabled last week. During a supplementary question, Hamzah said the 13MP lacked firmness in addressing the socioeconomic gap between Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera communities. "This isn't specifically about developing new Chinese villages. But when other MPs bring it up, what can I do?" he said. His remarks did not sit well with Mohd Sany Hamzan (PH–Hulu Langat), who interjected and asked the Larut MP, "Is this a debate?" He reminded the House that the session was Prime Minister's Question Time, not a debate. Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) then rose to defend Hamzah, questioning Sany's interruption. "Why are you interrupting the opposition leader? You keep interjecting. Just let him speak," he said. Sany shot back, reminding Hamzah and Wan Fayhsal that the session was meant for questions directed at the Prime Minister, not a debate. "Kau kenapa koyak? Koyak pula engkau." ("Why are you getting so worked up? You're the one losing it now.") The heated exchange was eventually diffused when Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul intervened, instructing all MPs to take their seats and allowing Hamzah to finish his remarks. Yesterday, tempers flared in the Dewan Rakyat after Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim (PN-Pendang) warned the government about a possible repeat of the May 13, 1969 race riots. Awang had alleged this could happen because the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) "sidelined Bumiputera interests". The uproar began when Awang interjected during opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin's debate speech on the 13MP, claiming the plan lacked development for Bumiputera while discussing Chinese new villages.

Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah: RM410mil disbursed in Sabah under Phases 1 and 2
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly 830,000 recipients in Sabah have benefited from the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) programme so far, with RM410 million disbursed under Phase 1 and Phase 2 payments. Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in a written parliamentary reply last night, said the remaining two STR phases are scheduled to be disbursed in August and November. He added that 506,000 recipients in the state have also been approved under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, which comes with an annual allocation of RM500 million. "Sabah recorded the highest MyKad usage for Sara purchases, with 95 per cent of recipients already making purchases at registered premises," he said. Anwar was responding to Vivian Wong Shir Yee (PH–Sandakan), who queries number of eligible Sara recipients in Sabah and how many had redeemed the assistance so far. Anwar also said more than 4,500 grocery stores and supermarkets nationwide are now registered under the programme, a significant jump from just 700 last year. "In line with the rising number of recipients, the number of participating business premises under Sara has also seen a marked increase. "In Sabah alone, more than 470 premises have registered, and this number will continue to grow to ensure broader access in all areas. He said the government remains committed to ensuring its cash aid programmes reach those most in need, especially in the face of rising living costs. "The government has raised the allocation for the STR and Sara programmes to a record RM13 billion, compared with RM10 billion previously. "This increase continues to benefit nearly nine million recipients, or about 60 per cent of the country's adult population," he said. On July 23, Anwar, who is also the prime minister, announced that all Malaysians aged 18 and above will receive a one-off RM100 assistance through their MyKad under the Sara programme. He said the aid, which can be used from Aug 31 until Dec 31, is meant for the purchase of essential goods at over 4,100 outlets nationwide, including major supermarkets such as Mydin, Lotus's, Econsave and 99 Speedmart, as well as retail stores in all districts.

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating all aspects surrounding the alleged leak of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting minutes, which surfaced online on 12 July. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was to ensure the probe is carried out comprehensively, fairly, and in accordance with the rule of law. He said police are also working with related agencies, including JAC to complete this investigation. "An investigation has been carried out under Section 8 of the Official Secrets Act 1972, Section 203A of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. "The investigation paper will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action once the investigation is complete," he said. He said this in a written reply to Ramkarpal Singh (PH–Bukit Gelugor) regarding the status of a police report made by a Federal Court judge's officer on purported JAC meeting minutes that were leaked. On July 13, police confirmed receiving a report regarding the leak of a document alleged to be minutes from a JAC meeting, which recently circulated on social media.
