Sabah looking to harness ocean's thermal energy in Tawau waters, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah hopes to adopt Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) in waters off Tawau as a source of renewable energy, says Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He said harnessing ocean thermal energy was part of the state's Blue Economy goals under the Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda. "In addition, the Sabah Biodiversity Centre and Yayasan Petronas, in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), are also actively carrying out the Seaweed Mapping Project across Sabah," he said in his speech at the World Biodiversity Day celebrations at the Dewan Arena Belia in Semporna,Thursday (July 24). In line with the focus on exploring, promoting, and supporting the Blue Economy, Hajiji gave his assurance that the state government will ensure that tourism activities in Semporna were well-regulated and do not disrupt marine biodiversity but provide benefits and advantages to the people of Sabah. The Chief Minister said that the approval of the Climate Change and Carbon Governance Enactment 2025 at the recent State Assembly sitting had positioned Sabah as the nation's leader in environmental conservation and resilience against climate change. He said the implementation of the Enactment would ensure the involvement of Sabah's native community and that their rights are protected through the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure. "I wish to emphasise that the Sabah State Government is committed to protecting and preserving the state's natural resources, biodiversity and ecosystem," he said in his speech delivered by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan. He said the celebration's theme, "Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development", is meaningful and underscored the crucial roles both elements play in preserving the health of the planet, enhancing human well-being and ensuring a sustainable future. "This theme is also timely and serves as a reminder to humanity, especially the people of Sabah, not to be complacent when carrying out development activities without considering the sustainability of biodiversity, the well-being of animals, plants, and ecosystems that bring benefits to our lives," he said. "By ensuring that nature is protected and valued, we not only safeguard biodiversity but also secure economic and social well-being for current and future generations," he said. He said that the concept aligns with the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Sabah Biodiversity Strategy 2024–2034. At the same time, today's celebration and theme also reflect the aspirations of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development agenda, which is fundamentally anchored in promoting green practices and supporting sustainable development. Conservation efforts, however, he said, needed strong support from all quarters, including government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, the local community, and the people of Sabah in general. He said the state government, on its part, would continue to implement development programmes that emphasise green sustainability by prioritising the responsible use and management of natural resources, as well as ensuring environmental protection, social well-being, and economic growth for future generations.

Petronas' Gawai initiative aligns with PCDS 2030 goals, says Sagah

He said social inclusion is a core component of Sarawak's Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which aims to ensure economic benefits reach all levels of society, particularly the B40 group and rural communities. 'The 'Petronas Memacu Kehidupan Gawai 2025' programme today aligns with the objectives of PCDS 2030. 'Organised in partnership between Petronas and the Welfare Department (JKM) Serian Division, the programme reached out to 150 recipients through the distribution of essential food baskets in the Serian district. 'These contributions not only alleviated the burden during the festive season but also brought joy to families celebrating Gawai Dayak,' he said when officiating the programme at Kampung Tarat Melawi here today. Each food basket contained cooking oil, glutinous rice, canned goods, condiments, and locally-produced coffee. Petronas Sarawak general manager Norazibah Md Rabu handed over the festive contributions to Serian Division Social Welfare officer Robert Jullong Bengat during the programme. In her speech, Norazibah said the initiative reaffirms Yayasan Petronas' commitment to uplifting marginalised communities. She said the programme was part of Petronas' Community Well-being and Development initiative, aimed at spreading festive joy. 'We believe that everyone deserves happiness, especially when celebrating meaningful occasions such as Gawai,' she said. A total of 750 families across Sarawak have been selected to receive the contributions this Gawai, including 400 households in Miri and Bintulu, she noted. 'It is our hope that these contributions not only lessen the burden of those in need but also kindle the festive spirit of Gawai – filled with gratitude, love and joy,' she said. Yayasan Petronas adopts 50 schools under Sekolah Angkat Madani initiative
PUTRAJAYA: Yayasan Petronas has adopted 50 schools nationwide in the government's Sekolah Angkat Madani initiative, with a key focus on enhancing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. Its chief executive officer, Nelly Francis, said the foundation's involvement is centred on schools that currently participate in its Duta Guru Programme (PDG), a long-term initiative aimed at strengthening STEM teaching and learning. "Under this initiative, we have selected 50 schools out of the 1,000 nationwide that are already involved in our PDG. "These schools were chosen based on specific criteria, including their active participation in our existing programmes," she told reporters when met after the launch of the initiative today. The launch was attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Nelly said priority was given to schools located in rural areas, with the majority of them in Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Johor, as well as several schools in Kedah, Perak and Kelantan. As part of the support, she said teachers from the selected schools will undergo a two-year professional development programme designed to equip them with skills to cultivate students' interest in STEM and guide them towards pursuing careers in the field. "It is not just about improving the teaching environment, but also inspiring students to view STEM as a viable and exciting career path," she said. Apart from empowering teachers, Yayasan Petronas also runs programmes for students under the Student Innovation Centre, provides contributions to improve school science laboratories, and develops STEM hubs in six regions. "We have completed STEM hubs in Tanjung Garam, Kuala Terengganu and Miri, Sarawak, while new hubs in Sabah, Johor, Melaka and Perak are currently under construction," she said. Nelly said these STEM hubs serve as platforms for teachers to further refine and apply the skills gained through PDG, as well as collaborate with other educators in their districts to enrich classroom learning. "All students in the adopted schools will be involved, particularly those who are pursuing STEM-related subjects," she said. Nelly reaffirmed that advancing STEM education remains one of Yayasan Petronas' core missions. "Right now, one of our key targets is to increase students' participation in STEM. We believe through sustained collaboration with teachers and schools, we can help shape the future of Malaysia's STEM talents," she said.
