Petronas backs healthcare initiatives in Sabah

SANDAKAN: Petronas recently contributed to the Bulan Pemakanan Malaysia 2025 and Jom Sihat Sandakan event, organised to promote health awareness among the local community. Co-organised by the Sandakan Official Association of Rehabilitation and Duchess of Kent Hospital, the programme focuses on raising public awareness about non-communicable diseases such as stroke, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidaemia.

In line with its commitment to community well-being and development – a core pillar of its social impact initiatives – Petronas, together with its social impact arm Yayasan Petronas, consistently supports various health-related programmes in Sabah through strategic collaborations with the Ministry of Community Development and People's Wellbeing, as well as the Sabah State Health Department. 'Petronas' involvement in the programme not only highlights our support for community well-being initiatives, but it also symbolises the spirit of collaboration between the public, private and community sectors for our collective well-being,' said Khairuddin. Petronas and Yayasan Petronas have been supporting healthcare initiatives in Sabah, providing crucial resources where they are needed most. Among its contributions included the funding of Duchess of Kent Hospital's Kent Cottage Anjung Kasih, which offers free accommodation to caregivers of patients undergoing treatment at the hospital, particularly those from remote or outlying areas. Building on this initiative, Petronas also supported the Sabah Social Welfare Department's Homeward initiative, a programme that equips patients recovering at home with essential medical equipment, including high-low beds and oxygen concentrators. Additionally, Yayasan Petronas further extended its support by donating haemodialysis machine sets for kidney treatment and infusion pumps for thalassemia patients, directly impacting the lives of those requiring specialised care. Hartal Doktor Kontrak renews call to end bullying culture in public healthcare

KOTA KINABALU: A medical pressure group has recently revealed that a trainee doctor at a hospital in Tawau suffered severe mental health issues after enduring prolonged workplace bullying. According to Hartal Doktor Kontrak (HDK), the junior doctor was repeatedly targeted by the same senior colleague during his or her housemanship. The group claimed that the situation left the doctor deeply depressed and isolated, confined to his or her room for years and unable to return to the medical field. In a Facebook post, HDK shared a video showing the condition of the doctor's room, which they say reflects the long-term impact of the trauma he experienced. HDK said the junior doctor's case is one of many stories they have gathered since launching their #stopworkplacebullying campaign three years ago. They noted that some healthcare workers have suffered such extreme distress from workplace bullying that they contemplated suicide. The Health Ministry had since set up a special task force – HWCITF – to investigate workplace bullying and recommend improvements, with HDK invited to contribute input. HDK voiced support for Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad's planned launch of anti-bullying guidelines for public hospitals and clinics this October. The group said they hoped such policies would help create safer, more respectful workplaces not just within the Health Ministry, but across all sectors. Use of ‘likely' in neglect charge against Zayn Rayyan's mum vague, court told

PETALING JAYA: A child psychologist told the sessions court today the word 'likely' in the neglect charge against Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin's mother is vague and lacks clarity. Dr Noor Aishah Rosli, 49, made the observation during examination-in-chief by defence counsel Haresh Mahadevan, representing Ismanira Abdul Manaf. She said that for an act to be classified as neglect – whether emotional, physical, or educational – it must be consistent and occur over a period of time. 'The concept is that neglect involves repeated actions within a specific time frame,' she said. Noor Aishah, who runs a private clinic, added that both the American Psychological Association and the World Health Organization adhered to this definition. Haresh then referred to the charge, which states that the accused neglected Zayn 'in a manner likely to cause him physical harm', and asked if it specified how the alleged neglect occurred. 'If we look at the sentence, the word 'likely' carries an uncertain meaning,' she replied. Haresh later referred the fifth defence witness to several documents, including Ismanira's police report from when Zayn was reported missing, the post-mortem report, and Zayn's medical records from the Selayang and Sungai Buloh hospitals. Haresh: Is there anything in the reports that can be linked to neglect? Noor Aishah: None. There is nothing in the reports that relates to neglect. Haresh: Is there anything in the medical records that shows Zayn was neglected or abused? Noor Aishah: None. Ismanira and her husband, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, were charged last year with neglecting their son. Zaim was acquitted after the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against him. The alleged offence took place in PJU Damansara Damai between noon on Dec 5, 2023 – when Zayn was reported missing – and 9.55pm the next day, when his body was found in a stream near his home at Apartment Idaman, Damansara Damai. Deputy public prosecutors Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, Aqharie Durranie Aziz, and Nur Sabrina Zubairi are leading the prosecution. Only 23pc pharmacists in Sabah hospitals Sabahans: Call for UMS to address situation

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Community Development and People's Wellbeing Minister Datuk James Ratib hopes to see more Sabahans employed as pharmacists in view of only 23 per cent currently serving government hospitals and clinics in the State being Sabah-borns. Speaking at the 36th Sabah State Pharmacy Conference at Le Meridien from Aug. 1-3, James said many pharmacies across Kota Kinabalu and other districts are also operated by non-Sabahans. To address this, James advocated for a policy requiring at least 70 per cent of community pharmacies to be owned by Sabahans. He said the proposal is not merely an economic measure, but a matter of health sovereignty for the State in view of growing concerns about lack of local representation in critical healthcare services. Deputy Health (Pharmacy) Director Dr Liau Siow Yen represented the Minister at the official opening. He said one way to address the problem is to set up a School of Pharmacy at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) increase investment in local talent development as well as provide more scholarships for Sabahans to pursue pharmacy studies. He noted the important role pharmacists play as vital guardians of medication management and key players in the healthcare system. He also spoke about the importance of ensuring continuous medicine supply, quality assurance of pharmaceuticals and primary care provision. James also advocated for stronger collaboration between public and private sector pharmacists in follow-up therapy, health screening and patient education, describing such partnerships as essential for improving treatment outcomes and medication adherence. The three-day conference, organised jointly by the Sabah Pharmaceutical Society and Sabah State Health Ministry's Pharmacy Services Division, brought together pharmacists from across Malaysia under the theme 'Think Health, Think Pharmacist'. The event featured sessions on artificial intelligence applications in healthcare, neuro-linguistic programming, military pharmacy experiences and human resources workshops. Delegates from Labuan, Pahang and Terengganu joined local pharmacists for the comprehensive programme. The conference also included community outreach activities, with pharmacists conducting home medication reviews at Holy Family Residence in Papar, demonstrating the profession's expanding role in direct patient care and community service.
