
Beware of scam sites when applying for ETA to Britain
Travellers planning a holiday in Britain are once again being warned about websites wildly overcharging for an unnecessary middle-man 'service' when applying for electronic travel authorisation (ETA).
One provider is charging as much as £85 (RM491), five times more than the cost on official channels, a consumer organisation in Germany is warning tourists.
There is no added value in this service, as tourists are ultimately paying a company to forward their information to the British authorities.
The problem is that cancellations with such overpriced intermediary websites are generally impossible once the service (i.e. your information being submitted) has taken place.
Instead, holidaymakers should only use the official channels of the British government for ETA applications.
These include the UK ETA app, available for Android and iOS, and the website of the UK Home Office. This direct link leads to the application: https://apply-for-an-eta.homeoffice.gov.uk/apply/electronic-travel-authorisation/how-to-apply.
The cost is £16 (RM92), regardless of whether you apply in the app or on the website.
In general, when applying for travel authorisations and visas, you should always exercise great caution and verify that it is the official website of the respective government, consumer advocates advise. After all, such processes involve sharing highly sensitive information – personal details from passports and credit card data.
Since early April, travellers from much of Europe, as well as North America, South America and parts of Asia, have needed the digital travel authorisation ETA to enter Britain, provided they do not have another residence permit or visa.
The ETA allows you to travel to Britain to visit for up to six months. Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei are the only South-East Asian countries that are eligible for the ETA, while the rest of the countries in the region must apply for a visa instead. – dpa

London Southend Airport closed, all flights cancelled after small plane crash

All flights to and from the airport have been cancelled while police, emergency services and air accident investigators are attending the incident, London Southend Airport said in a post on X. "We remain on the scene of a serious incident at Southend Airport," the local Essex police said, adding that they were alerted just before 4 p.m. to reports of a collision involving a 12-metre (39.4-foot) plane. It was unclear how many people were on the plane. Images from British newspaper websites, not verified by Reuters, showed a fireball rising into the air above Southend Airport, around 35 miles (56 km) east of London. The East of England Ambulance Service said it had sent four ambulances and other response vehicles. The airport's website showed five international flights had been cancelled following the accident. Transport operators urged to embrace digitalisation, open payment system
KUALA LUMPUR: All public transport operators must move towards digitalising their services and adopting open payment systems to improve convenience and efficiency for users, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke. He said the government has been advocating the implementation of open payment systems across all modes of public transport to ensure better integration and access for passengers. "I want all operators to digitalise, and I have always advocated an open payment system for our public transportation network," he said during the launch of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd's (KTMB) KITS Style today. KITS Style builds on KTMB's original Integrated Ticketing System (KITS) launched in 2019 and has evolved into an all-in-one Mobility-as-a-Service platform. It empowers users with seamless access to AI-powered journey planning; bookings for flights, hotels, attractions and car rentals; a rail rewards loyalty programme; insurance and utility payments; money transfers; mobile top-ups; and lifestyle offers. Commending KTMB's efforts, Loke said the rail operator had taken the lead in digitalising its payment systems. "KTMB has moved ahead of Prasarana (Malaysia Bhd) in implementing digital payment systems. "I'm not trying to compare, but this is healthy competition among our public transport operators." Loke said the KITS Style platform marked a significant step in KTMB's transformation journey. "With this, KTMB must continue to strive to provide reliable, safe and real-time services to both Malaysians and foreigners alike," he said.
