Analysts doubt Azmin's claim that PN can win 10 more seats in Selangor

Selangor PN chief Azmin Ali recently claimed that the coalition could take over the Selangor government by winning 10 more seats at the next state election. (Bernama pic)
PETALING JAYA : Analysts have questioned the recent claim by Selangor Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief Azmin Ali that the coalition is capable of winning 10 more seats at the next state election.
Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the voter demographics in several mixed constituencies would make it difficult for PN to gain ground.
He added that Azmin's confidence could be based on data from the previous state election.
'If PN secures 7,000 votes in the constituencies it previously lost, it might have a chance of forming the state government.
'But in reality… PN's chances in Selangor are slim,' he said.
Azmin had said in his speech at a Selangor Bersatu event that PN could take over the state government by winning 10 more seats.
PN currently holds 22 of the 56 seats in the Selangor state assembly.
Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said dissatisfaction among Umno members with the Barisan Nasional-Pakatan Harapan (BN–PH) alliance was a key factor in PN's previous gains at the last state election in 2023.
He said about 20% of Umno voters shifted their support during that election as they were influenced by negative portrayals of DAP – especially in Malay-majority areas – which contributed to PN's success.
'However, after more than two years, the unity government's image has improved and public confidence has grown. Many Umno members who backed PN may now return to Umno,' he said.
'PN may win a few more seats, but likely not more than in the last election,' he added.
The PH-BN alliance lost ground to PN at the August 2023 state election, claiming victory in 34 seats – 32 of which were won by PH – compared to the 2018 election when PH won 51 of the 56 seats.
BN won four seats then, and PAS one.

Ramsamy: Time to restore dignity; it's now or never for MCA to bid farewell to BN coalition

THE United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) fully supports the stand of some sections in MCA to break away from Barisan Nasional (BN) in general and UMNO in particular. Contrary to the warning issued by the UMNO supreme council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi, MCA is already in a deep mess within BN let alone digging its own grave by leaving the coalition. Although MCA has yet to make the final move, it is nevertheless clear that remaining in BN with UMNO's new-found ally DAP does not augur well for the grand old party of the Chinese. If UMNO can embrace its bitter political enemy despite years of bitterness and animosity, then UMNO in the eyes of the MCA has become unreliable and not trustworthy. Following the last general elections in 2022, UMNO was instrumental in not allocating ministerial positions for MCA and MIC. The latest assurance of UMNO president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi that MCA and MIC will be considered for ministerial positions seems to be less than honest. Editor's Note: Zahid who is also the BN chairman had expressed confidence that MCA will remain in the coalition despite speculation of an internal push for the party to leave. 'There's no such thing (as MCA leaving BN). If it were happening, I'd hear it directly from MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong,' Zahid who is also the Deputy Prime Minister said after launching the Port Dickson UMNO division delegates meeting over the weekend (June 15). 'Perhaps there are movements by certain quarters; I've been told about that but the decision of their central committee suggests otherwise. In the Cabinet appointments, UMNO grabbed all the positions leaving MCA and MIC with nothing. While there are reasons why the MIC is reluctant to leave the fold of the BN and more so the PH-led coalition, there is nothing for MCA to gain by prolonging its stay within the BN coalition. By prolonging its stay in the BN, MCA is only digging its own grave. Leaving the BN means among other things restoration of dignity and the chance to climb out of the coffin. MCA or the MIC cannot wait for the right circumstances to leave, decision must be made under the circumstances that present themselves. It is now or never for MCA that is on the verge of drowning in the tears of sorrow and indignity. – June 17, 2025 Former DAP stalwart and Penang chief minister II Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy is chairman of the United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) interim council. Union demand talks after 161-year-old Penang Turf Club closes, says workers denied fair retrenchment process

GEORGE TOWN, June 17 — Members of the Club Employees Union of Peninsular Malaysia (CEUPM) held a peaceful protest today over the Penang Turf Club's (PTC) alleged failure to engage in negotiations with its retrenched workers since May 31. The union's Secretary-General Rudy Rusly said the employer's action violated the spirit and principles of collective bargaining as enshrined in the Industrial Relations Act 1967. This, he said, concerns the right of employees to be represented by a trade union in matters related to terms and conditions of employment and retrenchment. The protest over stalled retrenchment negotiations follows the closure of the club after a 161-year run. 'The union asserts that any retrenchment action must be negotiated with the union to ensure workers' welfare is protected and that dignified compensation is discussed fairly. 'Employers cannot make unilateral decisions that affect workers' livelihoods without negotiating with the union. It is a lawful action under the law to express our protest and demand justice for our members,' he said in a statement yesterday. He called on PTC to return to the negotiating table and respect the workers' right to union representation. — Bernama

MCA, go it alone in GE16

YOURSAY | 'Next polls might see BN being wiped out from history.' MCA says Zahid missed the point, wants clarity on Madani ties Zahid assures seats for MCA, MIC in GE16 amid calls to quit BN ScarletPanda9731: MCA, MIC, and Umno formed the Alliance Party, and eventually, the Alliance Party brought in other parties to form BN. They have stood together to this day. Although MCA and MIC have lost more and more seats in recent years. In the earlier years, the Alliance Party was the strongest coalition. Now, BN has lost more and more seats. Never forget that the Alliance and BN were in power for decades. Obviously, it lost its way, for it has forgotten what it stood for. Greed, as usual, took centre stage. The last election for Umno saw its waning popularity. When an open contest was avoided and the top leaders were genuinely worried that they would lose their positions, they suspended or sacked challengers. Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant near tasted of death but once, said William Shakespeare. Sadly, and regrettably, some of the best brains were sidelined. The top leaders who went to the polls, so confident of winning more seats with the proverbial call, 'Strike while the iron is hot', indeed became very 'hot' themselves when BN lost most seats. Poor Khairy Jamaluddin, former Umno youth chief, was sidelined and sent to Sungai Buloh to contest. He lost narrowly, despite it being a very new area for him, and very little help was extended to him in the election. Now, even MCA and MIC leaders are thinking aloud whether the situation is untenable for them to remain in a sinking boat. The next polls might see BN being wiped out from history. Pakatan Harapan must read and learn history, lest it walk the same path as BN. PKR was founded under 'reformasi' ideals, but it appears that it, too, has forgotten history. Reformasi is moving like a 'turtle on the beach', to quote billionaire Elon Musk, as he saw how the US government machinery works. The civil service in most nations is like a 'turtle' that moves on the beach. Efficiency is lacking. Red tape seems to be the norm. LimeHorse5802: I strongly believe MCA should go it alone in the 16th general election (GE16), without aligning with BN. It's increasingly likely that Umno will side with Perikatan Nasional and for good reason - Harapan is losing Malay support at a faster rate than Umno. An alliance between Umno and Harapan will not benefit anyone, least of all MCA. If MCA remains under Harapan's umbrella, it will be constrained by incumbency policies, likely limited to just two parliamentary seats. Meanwhile, many within DAP may disagree, but the reality is that DAP is currently at one of its weakest points. Now is the time for MCA to contest as a standalone party, focusing on non-Malay voters, particularly the Chinese electorate. Once you win seats, you can cherry-pick the coalition to form the next government. Of course, this strategy comes with a caveat: MCA must be prepared for the challenge. Objectively, the party has become more vocal and has gained some credibility, but more is needed. It's time to fully unleash your strengths: activate your vast network of business contacts, leverage your two universities to support the educational needs of the marginalised, and most importantly, mobilise your financial war chest. WhiteCarp4942: MCA, please contest on your own, don't cling to BN. You are MCA because BN made you so. Now BN has made the other party much, much more MCA than you. So, you are now much, much less MCA than they are. I voted for the other MCA because they were not MCA previously. Now that they are much, much more MCA than you, I'll vote for the lesser MCA, you, if there is no other option. I'm not alone. Many hate the greater MCA more than the little MCA. They became the bigger MCA in less than a term. If you still contest under BN, then you are both equally MCA. Don't complain if you are dumped again. You have an opportunity to rejuvenate, don't waste this opportunity. EmEmKay: While we acknowledge that Umno, MCA, and MIC were instrumental in Malaysia's fight for independence, it's essential to recognise that since the 1990s, these parties have become complacent and disconnected from the needs of the people. This complacency has led to a culture that condones corruption, exemplified by the silence of BN leaders during the 1MDB scandal. Billions were misappropriated under then-prime minister Najib Razak's watch without any dissent from within the coalition. On the other hand, the current performance of DAP leaders has been commendable, as they seem more in tune with the citizens' needs and interests. While we cannot forget the historical contributions of MCA and MIC, it is crucial to advocate for accountability and transparency moving forward.
