Wayne Rooney hits back at Tom Brady: He doesn't understand football

Timesa day ago
Wayne Rooney has hit back at Tom Brady, saying the NFL legend 'does not understand football' in response to critical comments the Birmingham City minority owner made in a new documentary series.
In one scene of Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues, an Amazon Prime series following the club and featuring Rooney's time as manager, Brady says he is 'a little worried about our head coach's work ethic' after a visit to the training ground. Brady also suggested that some of the players were 'lazy and entitled'.
Rooney was appointed by Birmingham City in October 2023 and sacked less than three months later after only 15 games in charge.
On Thursday the former England captain responded to the comments from the former New England Patriots quarterback on his new BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show.
'I think Tom came in once, which was the day before a game where the days are a little bit lighter anyway, and I don't think he really understood football that well. But what he does understand is, he's a hard worker, we know that,' Rooney, 39, said.
'Football is not NFL — the NFL works for three months a year. Players do need rest as well, so I think he's very unfair, the way he's come out and portrayed that.
'Listen, I respect Tom Brady massively. He's one of the greatest, if not the greatest athlete of all time and Birmingham do look like they're getting it right now, which is good and I think what they have done is get the players out that they needed to get out.'
Brady bought a stake in the Midlands club a month after Knighthead Capital had completed their takeover in July 2023. The former American footballer was convinced to join the project by his friend Tom Wagner, co-chief executive of Knighthead Capital and now co-owner at Birmingham.
In their first few months in charge they controversially got rid of the manager, John Eustace, and brought in Rooney, who was then dismissed with the club facing a relegation fight and replaced by Tony Mowbray.
'When I went into Birmingham, they were in a mess, really,' Rooney said. 'Hence the fact that the players weren't really the players who could take the club forward. You had Tony Mowbray, Gary Rowett [in as manager] after me, who also struggled as well.'
After their relegation to League One they appointed Chris Davies as manager in June 2024 and invested £30million in new players, which contributed to them topping the division last season with 111 points, an EFL record, and being promoted to the Championship.
They drew 1-1 in their opening game of the new campaign on Friday night and face Blackburn Rovers away this weekend.

Mikel Arteta: Martin Odegaard deserves to be Arsenal captain ‘by a mile'

Mikel Arteta insists there is 'no question' Martin Odegaard still deserves to captain Arsenal after former skipper Tony Adams called for the Norwegian to be stripped of the armband. Adams, speaking at an Irish Independent Sport event in Dublin, demanded the Gunners boss make the change ahead of the new campaign, arguing 'proper player' Declan Rice was the man for the job. Arteta vehemently disagreed with that assessment, confirming Odegaard has the backing of everyone at the club. 'My opinion is clear,' said Arteta, 'and it's not just my opinion. It's all the staff and especially the players. 'I asked them to vote (for) the captain and I got the results yesterday. By a mile, by a big, big, by 100 miles, everybody chose the same person, Martin Odegaard, which is the most clear sign that you can have. 'It's how they feel about who has to be their captain, to defend, to improve, and win the matches that we want to win, so I think there is no question about that.' Adams, quoted in the Irish Independent, said: 'Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club, that you think can actually take you to the next level. 'You've got someone in there who's going to play every game all season, that's going to encourage people to come in and lay the foundations of a title-winning team. 'Declan Rice can do that, Odegaard can't. Come on Arteta, make him captain. I think he is better than Arteta. I think he's a winner. As a man, he is a proper player.' Arteta said he could talk about leadership 'for hours', but asked to summarise Odegaard's qualifications, replied: 'What matters the most is how these guys feel about who needs to lead them, how they feel comfortable, who is going to push them, who is going to give them support when it's happening.' Arsenal kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to Manchester United, then host newly promoted Leeds before a difficult stretch that will see them play Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Manchester City and Newcastle. That run, agreed Arteta, could be the ideal litmus test for their capacity for winning the title this season. He said: 'Yes, especially (with) the consistency that we showed in the last three years, and now the margins, we know how small they are. We know that the competition has increased the level with recruitment, with another year together.' Arteta confirmed summer signings Viktor Gyokeres and Martin Zubimendi will be fit to play on Sunday, and is optimistic Leandro Trossard will also be available. And while Arteta joked 'too many' Premier League teams have a legitimate shot at lifting the trophy, some he even suspects will 'surprise everybody', he remains more determined than ever to claim the silverware that has so far eluded him. He added: 'You keep digging, digging, digging, and you have to be digging because one day the gold is going to be there. 'You have the consistency, but now we have to do it in a season, to end with more points than any other team. That's the objective.'

Climate activists spill 1,000 litres of fake blood over North Sea oil rig

Greenpeace activists scaled a Shell fossil fuel rig and unfurled a massive 96 square metre canvas across its side, drenching it in a crimson liquid on Wednesday, August 13. The protest was conceived in collaboration with British artist Anish Kapoor. 'I wanted to make something visual, physical, visceral to reflect the butchery they are inflicting on our planet: a visual scream that gives voice to the calamitous cost of the climate crisis,' Kapoor said. Greenpeace says it marks the first time an artwork has ever been installed on an active fossil fuel platform anywhere in the world. A Shell UK spokesperson said: 'Their actions were extremely dangerous, involved illegally trespassing, and put their own and others' lives at risk.'

Gyles Brandreth breaks down in tears live on This Morning as he shares devastating family bereavements - while Emma Willis rushes to comfort him

broke down in tears live on This Morning as he shared a devastating family bereavement on Friday's instalment of the ITV show. The 77-year-old and presenter Rachel Johnson, 51, appeared on the sofa to chat to hosts Emma Willis, 49, and Craig Doyle, 54, about VJ Day. The annual celebration is on August 15 and marks the end of WWII. Viewers sent in pictures of their loved ones that were involved , to which Gyles said: 'Whenever we talk about the war, I think of my own parents. 'My father was in the army for 60 years during the second World War, in intelligence - rarely talked about it.' They then shared a snap of his beloved dad which made him well up. 'There he is bless him,' Gyles said. As his voice broke, he continued: 'That's rather touching.' He then turned to Rachel and added: 'And your grandparents.' Rachel put her arm around his shoulder and as Gyles fought back the tears, he said: 'They were the good people! Really good people. 'And interestingly, very interestingly, rarely talked about it. Just got on with it.' Emma got up from her seat and rushed to the coffee table to hand Gyles a tissue. Gyles went on to explain: 'My father-in-law was in the RAF seeing the flights going over there and there were millions of people on all sides, of course, we were defeating an enemy for freedom. 'It was a necessary war, it had a horrific ending because of the atomic bomb falling. 'But you've got to remember it's individuals. 'And when you see the wars today, in Europe, and in the Middle East, it's actually individuals on the front line on all sides. 'It is alarming, but well done to people like my dad and my father-in-law.' Gyles wasn't the only person who got emotional during Friday's morning television. Robert Rinder fought back tears during Friday's instalment of the ITV show. He was visibly emotional after the programme shared footage of the military pipers marking the start of the commemoration. Robert said: 'That sound is so profoundly evocative of what freedom means to reflect on today. 'To celebrate, commemorate and above all else, don't you think to remember and commemorate the sacrifice of those who died so all of us could be free.' Others rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share how much they enjoyed him being on their screen. 'I do like when it's Rob Rinder on a Friday #gmb.' '@GMB what a treat to switch on this morning and see [Rob] Rinder!! someone who can actually discuss topics with guests who actually has intelligence.' 'Robert Rinder and Charlotte Hawkins be your main pressenters.' 'Petition to keep Rob Rinder as the main anchor during the week. Big brain, asks the right questions. open your cheque book #gmb.'
