Ireland's favourite sea swimming spot revealed and it's not The Forty Foot
The Forty Foot and Vico Baths in Dublin might be the most well-known swimming spots, but neither have won the prestigious title of Ireland's favourite sea swimming location. Blackrock Beach in Galway was given the coveted award. With its Blue Flag status and iconic diving board, it's no wonder the beach is loved by many. It's popular all year round for tourists and is visited regularly by local swimming clubs. A new survey by The Lagoon Activity Centre in Rosscarbery, Cork, found that the second-best spot is Banna Beach in Kerry. It based the list on Google Trends data over the past five years as well as Instagram hashtags. Another Blue Flag winner, the 8km long sandy beach boasts stunning sunsets, clean waters and famous Kerry scenery. While The Forty Foot and Vico Baths were not the winners, the Dublin swimming locations were not forgotten about on the top five list. Located in Sandycove, the Forty Foot came in third place. A legendary spot that has featured on the screen, it's packed out with sea swimmers even in the winter time. It boasts loyal cold-water swimmers but is also perfect for beginners who want to immerse themselves in the water before they change their mind. As well as its scenic sea swimming, the spot has sheltered rock pools that provide calm, clear waters to cool off in. It's a favourite of popstar Harry Styles, who swam there with his then director girlfriend Olivia Wilde in 2022. Closing out the top five is Myrtleville Beach, Cork. A short distance from the city centre, this stunning beach is popular for families and swimmers looking for a relaxing cool dip. A group of onlookers watches swimmers jumping into the sea at the Vico Baths in Dublin (Image: Artur Widak/NurPhoto via Getty Images) The Lagoon Activity Centre also uncovered some hidden treasures about Ireland's best swimming beaches. It found that Kerry has the most blue flags in the country, with 15 beaches waving the honour. Cork has the most green coast awards - which recognises beaches with high environmental quality, excellent water quality and effective management. Sea swimming has become quite the trend in Ireland over the past couple of years. According to public consultation for the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy, 60% of respondents said they participate in open water swimming more than once a month. There are a reel of benefits to dipping in the Irish Sea or the cold Atlantic Ocean. From better sleep to reduced inflammation and even a natural high, sea swimmers swear by plunging themselves in the freezing water. It has been proven to help clear the mind of worries and anxieties and can alleviate physical ailments including arthritis. However, safety is key when it comes to open water swimming. Paul Melody of The Lagoon Activity Centre says that swimming in a group is the best way to stay safe. He said: 'They say there's safety in numbers and I would apply that to sea swimming. Clubs are great not only for the community element and health benefits, but for safety. 'The sea can change in an instant, and while it's assumed everyone would be a good swimmer, it's reassuring to go out as a group.' There was a surge in popularity of sea swimming in 2020, as the country was forced to find new hobbies during the Covid-19 lockdowns. Despite the world reopening, it is only growing. While Water Safety Ireland welcomes this, it stresses that anyone entering the sea must follow safety guidelines. It recommends swimming with a friend, near a lifeguard and to always obey posted signs and flags. Swimmers should also learn about local rip current safety, and should check water temperatures and tides- which can be found online. Paul said swimming with a group is the safest, but it's also really enjoyable, adding: 'It's really great for creating bonds and friendships. Even group activities like kayaking get people to communicate more clearly and work better together, and we often see business teams leave the centre feeling more together.'
