Tourist arrivals to Malaysia up from China, Singapore, UK, Indonesia, India in 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: International visitor arrivals to Malaysia from China increased by 35.6 per cent in the first half of this year, rising to 2,178,857 from 1,607,413. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said that between January and June, Malaysia recorded an overall increase in international visitors. He added that Singapore also saw a rise, with more than 10 million visitors this year compared to 8.4 million in 2024, a 22.5 per cent increase. "Long-haul markets such as the United Kingdom performed well, with 215,813 visitors, a 9.5 per cent increase. "Indonesia ranked second with 2,197,288 visitors in 2025, an 8.2 per cent increase from 2,031,111 in 2024. "This was followed by Thailand, which saw 1,237,979 visitors this year, a 5.4 per cent increase from 1,174,818 last year, and India with 807,664 visitors, a 26.6 per cent increase from 638,109," he told the Dewan Rakyat while winding up the 13th Malaysia Plan today. However, he added that visitor arrivals from Brunei declined to 747,851 in 2025 from 885,420 in 2024. Tiong said promotional and advertising allocations are tailored to the potential and size of each market, rather than being focused on a single one. "To ensure a positive impact, promotional activities are concentrated on digital and social media platforms, especially in high-potential markets," he added.

Company wins right to revisit RM17mil land dispute case

Setiakon Engineering Sdn Bhd won its bid for a review of a RM17 million land dispute case after the Federal Court allowed its application under Rule 137 of the Federal Court Rules 1995. PUTRAJAYA : A company that bought a RM17 million plot of land in Mukim Batu, Kuala Lumpur, 10 years ago, has won the right for a review of a Federal Court ruling made last year on the grounds that it suffered procedural injustice. A five-member bench of the Federal Court chaired by Court of Appeal president Justice Abu Bakar Jais today unanimously allowed Setiakon Engineering Sdn Bhd's review application under Rule 137 of the Federal Court Rules 1995. Abu Bakar said the company had crossed the threshold required under the rule. Other judges on the panel were Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim and Justices Zabariah Yusof, Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh and Lee Swee Seng. The ruling today set aside last year's 3-1 Federal Court majority decision in favour of Mak Yan Tai and her brother Mak Kum Phoi. A fresh panel will now rehear the appeal. Lawyer Cyrus Das, representing Setiakon, argued that the company was denied the right to tender rebuttal evidence, as the issue of fraud was raised for the first time at the apex court. Lawyer Winston PC Ng and John Foo assisted Das while Krishna Dallumah represented the siblings. The dispute began when the 0.87ha plot was initially registered under the name of the sibling's mother, Wong Soo, as security for a loan taken by Lim Moy. In 2014, Lim applied to the High Court for a declaration that she was the rightful owner of the land and that it should be transferred back to her from Wong, as the loan had been fully repaid. A default judgment was granted to Lim, resulting in the land being registered under her name. She later sold the land to Paragon Capacity Sdn Bhd for RM15 million. Paragon then sold it to Setiakon for RM17 million in 2015. The siblings succeeded in setting aside the default judgment in November 2017 after neither Lim nor her attorney appeared to contest the matter. The siblings then filed a fresh suit against Lim, Paragon and Setiakon in 2019. Only Setiakon defended the claim. The High Court ruled in favour of Setiakon as a bona fide subsequent purchaser under Section 340(3) of the National Land Code, but this was later overturned by the Court of Appeal. Setiakon then obtained leave to appeal to the Federal Court, but the apex court dismissed the appeal, resulting in the review application.

Malaysia targets high-value tourists for Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will continue focusing advertising and promotional efforts on attracting high-value tourists while maintaining initiatives for volume tourism under the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said claims that his ministry was solely focusing on potential tourists from China were inaccurate. He stressed that efforts to attract international visitors also involved various other countries. He added that a comparison of foreign tourist arrivals between January and July 2024 and 2025 for 10 countries showed a significant increase. 'Tourist arrivals from Singapore in 2025 rose by 25.5% to 10,288,256, compared with 8,397,886 in 2024; Indonesia increased by 8.2% to 2,197,288 from 2,031,111; China grew by 35.6% to 2,178,857 from 1,607,413; and India recorded a 26.6% rise to 807,664 from 638,109. 'We are not only focused on promoting the country's tourism to China; we also aim to attract high-end and high-spending tourists,' he said when winding up the debate on the motion on the 13th Malaysia Plan for his ministry. Tiong said all advertising and promotional efforts for VM2026 had been strategically planned and implemented across major markets, despite a lack of allocation. He urged all parties, including Members of Parliament, to support efforts to promote the country's tourism and refrain from politicising or sensationalising the initiative. He said the Ministry of Arts, Tourism and Culture continued to focus on all tourism segments, including Muslim-friendly tourism, which offered significant potential. He said MOTAC, through the Islamic Tourism Centre, was committed to developing and promoting Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality, highlighting Quran-based tourism with main attractions such as the Nasyrul Quran Complex in Putrajaya and Yayasan Restu in Shah Alam. 'ITC has also carried out a tourism promotion mission to four major countries, namely China, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan and Vietnam, as part of efforts to boost Muslim tourist arrivals, particularly ahead of VM2026,' he said. Meanwhile, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the government encouraged 'pondok' institutions catering to the elderly to register as Senior Citizens Activity Centres to enable them to receive appropriate government support and assistance. She said that although the pondok education system provided lifelong learning opportunities for the elderly, the government could only channel assistance if the institution was officially registered as a PAWE. 'We have advised operators of the pondok schools to establish PAWEs. Once registered, they will be responsible for any activities they undertake and can apply for assistance from the ministry. 'We cannot provide any assistance if they are not registered with us as PAWEs,' she said, addressing an interjection by Datuk Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff. Siti Zailah highlighted the need for the pondok education system to be recognised as part of the Action Plan for Senior Citizens 2030, as many elderly individuals choose to stay at these institutions to acquire knowledge. The Dewan Rakyat sitting continues tomorrow. – Bernama
