One of Newcastle's new recruits made his impact on the pitch almost instantly as Anthony Elanga fired the Magpies ahead on his first start for the team after slicing home from Sandro Tonali's low cross.
However, the Gunners struck twice in quick succession when Mikel Merino tucked home into the bottom corner and two minutes later Alex Murphy turned the ball into his own net.

Jacob Murphy equalised for Newcastle after the break with a low finish from outside of the box, but Martin Odegaard snatched victory from the penalty spot in the 84th minute.

Liverpool receive unlikely Alexander Isak boost as manager makes telling transfer decision

Liverpool's pursuit of Alexander Isak may be aided by Enzo Maresca's decision to axe Nicolas Jackson in pre-season, with both strikers wanting summer moves away from their respective clubs Liverpool have received an unlikely boost in their pursuit of Alexander Isak, with Newcastle given hope of signing a replacement striker before the end of the transfer window. Isak's future at Newcastle remains unclear despite the start of the Premier League fast approaching ‌ The Swede, 25, wants to leave the Magpies after enjoying three stellar seasons in the north east. Liverpool, despite signing a striker in Hugo Ekitike this summer, have already submitted an opening offer of £120million, which Newcastle rejected. ‌ Newcastle have informed Isak that they will not allow him to leave under any circumstances, as they want to ensure they have an adequate replacement up top. It is claimed Isak has been told he will not play for the club again until he accepts this fact - something the striker is understood not to have taken well. ‌ But while the former Real Sociedad hitman is forced to train away from his team-mates and miss pre-season friendlies, Newcastle target Nicolas Jackson is enduring the same treatment in west London. The Chelsea forward, 24, told the club he wants to leave Stamford Bridge earlier this week. Jackson was then left out of Enzo Maresca's squad against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday and trained alone at Cobham during the day. He was also left out of Sunday's game against AC Milan, having been the Blues' first-choice striker last season. The forward is expected to leave before the end of the summer transfer window amid interest from Newcastle and Tottenham, with Chelsea open to a sale despite him signing a contract extension until 2033 last season. Jackson's arrival at Newcastle would be a hugely welcome addition given Eddie Howe's desperation for a forward - the Toon have already missed out on a number of key targets this summer, including Chelsea signing Joao Pedro, Benjamin Sesko and Ekitike - and could pave the way for Isak to leave for Liverpool. Isak's potential move to Liverpool has only exacerbated the situation, given that he scored a crucial 27 goals last season across all competitions. Despite Newcastle's aforementioned stance on not letting Isak leave, it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will return with an improved second offer. ‌ Jackson, who arrived at Chelsea for £32m in 2023, would provide versatility up front off the back of a season where he notched 13 goals and six assists, and 30 in total since his move from Villarreal. Blues boss Maresca said regarding his recent omission from the squad: "He's okay. When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen. This also involves Nico's situation. At the moment, we also had two strikers arrive, both of them in the USA, Joao (Pedro) and Liam (Delap). So we will see what happens."

Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Lookman ‘REJECTS move', Gunners ‘on verge' of making Eze bid, Rodrygo ‘LOAN' deal

THE summer transfer window is heading towards a thrilling climax - and Arsenal's business is far from finished. Ademola Lookman isn't interested in a move to Arsenal and only wants Inter Milan, according to reports. Elsewhere, Gunners are reportedly on the verge of making a bid for Eberechi Eze, with Fabio Vieira expected to leave for Stuttgart. In other news, Arsenal are said to be waiting to see if Real Madrid will allow Rodrygo out on loan. Today, 14:00 By Kieran Davies Arteta to miss out on striker Arsenal could miss out on the signing of Blackburn Rovers youngster Igor Tyjon in the coming weeks, according to reports - with the Gunners being snubbed in their advances to land the young English starlet. Tyjon joined Rovers in the summer of 2023 at the age of just 15, and instantly got to work in their under-21 side, impressing a cohort of England scouts. With four goals in 11 outings for the youth teams of the Three Lions, Tyjon is a player with real promise, having been called 'eye-catching' in the past - but a move to Arsenal hasn't progressed as much as first thought. Today, 13:30 By Kieran Davies Stuttgart hold key to Eze transfer The German outfit's interest in Fabio Viera seems key to Arsenal securing the services of Eberechi Eze. This may soon become a reality as Stuttgart can now accelerate plans to sign Vieira with the funds brought in from Millot's sale to Al Ahli. Enzo Millot has signed for the Saudi Pro League side and now Stuttgart need to find a replacement, having already voiced interest in Arsenal's Portuguese midfielder. Today, 13:00 By Kieran Davies Arteta forces stadium alterations As has been seen during pre-season friendlies, fans have noticed a difference to The Emirates stadium. The usual pull-out cover has been removed from the tunnel area at the request of the manager. He felt it muffles the noise of the supporters as the two teams are preparing to come out onto the pitch and wanted to create a more intimidating atmosphere. Credit: @Arsenal Today, 12:30 By Kieran Davies Cottagers resume talks with Gunners Fulham have resumed discussions with Arsenal over another loan spell at Craven Cottage – after Shakhtar Donetsk winger Kevin said he wasn't interested in moving to SW6. The Daily Mirror's Ryan Taylor reports that the Whites put their summer-long talks with the Gunners over a second successive loan spell for Nelson on loan in order to pursue a permanent deal for Shakhtar's young Brazilian winger. But the Ukrainian outfit rejected Fulham's £35m bid and the 22 year-old speedster was not interested in signing for the Cottagers. Today, 12:00 By Kieran Davies Speed of business is key Arsenal need to be on the ball with their remaining transfer dealings. The signing of Viktor Gyokeres dragged on through the entire summer before finally getting their man. If the same happens with Eberechi Eze, they could miss out on players they are considering instead of the Palace winger. One such player is RB Leipzig's Xavi Simons, with Chelsea in talks with his club currently. It is believed there is a £10m difference in the two club's valuations, leaving the door open for The Gunners to act fast if they really want to secure his services. Today, 11:30 By Kieran Davies Arteta has 'plan B' lined up Mikel Arteta is considering a swoop for Ademola Lookman if they cannot secure the services of Eberechi Eze. The Atalanta forward is reportedly available for £45m, considerably less than what they would have to pay for the Crystal Palace winger. Any potential deal for Lookman seems to rest on The Eagles' willingness to part company with their talismanic winger. Today, 11:02 By Kieran Davies Mikel happy but active Following their pre-season friendly victory yesterday, Mikel Arteta addressed whether there would be any more transfer activity. 'Let's see what happens in terms of where the squad is in the next few weeks, but we are actively looking at options, as well there are a few players maybe that they have to leave as well so we'll be open to see what happens. 'I think having everybody involved at their best, that's what we want and then we're going to have to start with 11 players and other players are going to have to impact the game. 'At the end they're going to have to earn it on that pitch with every day, with their behaviour, the quality and the connection that they show with the team and it's exactly what we need." Today, 10:30 By Kieran Davies Gunners circling on Magpies' transfer Newcastle have had a torrid transfer window, with many of their targets opting for different destinations. Rumours circulate that The Gunners are waiting in the wings to jump in to capture Malick Thiaw if The Magpies cannot conclude the signing. Despite seemingly having an abundance of centre-backs in their squad, Arteta still seems keen to strengthen in that area. Any such deal would leave Newcastle fans in disbelief of their business, or lack thereof, this summer. Today, 10:00 By Nyle Smith Push it to the Max Arsenal fans were confused to see Max Dowman left out of yesterday's Emirates Cup squad. Mikel Arteta: 'Let's see how it goes. Let's go into Saturday, into the break as well. He needs a little break because he hasn't had any holidays really. 'So, in the next few days, he's going to have a break, which I think he needs. And then, following the week, he'll be ready again to go.' Today, 09:30 By Nyle Smith Bart to finish A former Arsenal star has been forced to retire with injury just 24 hours before the first game of the season. The 34-year-old defender has brought an end to his playing career after suffering a knee injury last season - announcing the decision just 24 hours before West Brom's Championship season begins. Today, 09:00 By Nyle Smith Eze merry-go-round Arsenal may have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Crystal Palace talisman Eberechi Eze. Former Stuttgart star Enzo Millot has made the switch to Saudi side Al Ahli which means that the Bundesliga outfit can try and accelarate a deal for Fabio Vieira. And if Arsenal can agree a deal for Vieira with Stuttgart, that then frees up funds for Eze. Today, 08:56 By Charlie Wyett "weapon" Mikel Arteta reckons Noni Madueke has proved he can be a big 'weapon' for Arsenal after shrugging off disgusting online abuse from his new fans. The £55million arrival from Chelsea has angered some Arsenal supporters because he is the latest signing to have joined from Stamford Bridge. Yet England international Madueke delivered a hugely encouraging performance as a second half substitute in Saturday's 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. And Arteta also believes the fans inside the Emirates have given the versatile player a massive confidence boost. Manager Arteta, preparing for next Sunday's Premier League opener at Manchester United, said: 'I think the reception that he got every time he was on the ball, the other day as well, was super-positive. 'I think that lifts any player, it brings energy. You can tell the quality he has every time he's on the ball, and around the box, on one-v-one. The ball lands so easily to a player in our shirt inside the box and that's a massive quality to have. 'He can play left and right, he doesn't care, so he's a big weapon for us.' Madueke has given Arteta a welcome selection puzzle ahead of the Premier League opener at Manchester United next Sunday. Gabriel Martinelli did okay against Athletic Bilbao and it was an improvement on the poor display in the 3-2 loss to Villarreal on Wednesday. Yet Madueke added more of a spark on the left when he came on at half-time. The only concern for Arteta would be that he is not yet 100 per cent match fit after being handed a rest - albeit a brief one - after Chelsea's Club World Cup success in the United States. Leandro Trossard is Arteta's only short-term injury problem and he was ruled out of Saturday's game with a slight groin problem and should be back in training in a few days. But there is no chance that Trossard, who could be sold in the next couple of weeks, has any chance of starting Sunday's tough opening game against United. 9th Aug 2025, 22:00 By Henry Tomlinson Arteta still active Mikel Arteta has insisted that Arsenal are still in the market for further reinforcements this summer. Speaking after the win over Bilbao, he said: "Let's see what happens in terms of where the squad is at in the next few weeks. "We are actively looking at options, there are a few players that may have to leave also." 9th Aug 2025, 21:15 By Henry Tomlinson How did United get on? Manchester United drew their final pre-season game before facing Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday week. The Red Devils fell behind to a set-piece against Fiorentina at Old Trafford. It was only an own-goal from Robin Goosens that saved Ruben Amorim's side from defeat. By Henry Tomlinson United boost Manchester United have received a timely boost ahead of their Premier League opener against Arsenal. Both Joshua Zirkzee and Andre Onana have returned to first-team training. The pair could be in contention to feature against the Gunners on the opening day. 9th Aug 2025, 19:52 By Mitchell Hall Arsenal not interested in Lookman Arsenal are not keen on signing Atlanta star Ademola Lookman this summer. That is according to Tuttosport, who claim the Gunners' interest in Lookman has cooled. The same source claims the Serie A outfit have been waiting for offers to arrive after turning down two bids from Inter Milan. But the North Londoners have already signed Viktor Gyokeres for a whopping £63.5million, and winger Noni Madueke for £55million. Gyokeres opened his account with Arsenal during their 3-0 Emirates Cup win over Athletic Bilbao earlier today.

Mikel Arteta shares plans for Kai Havertz after Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres transfer

Arsenal beat Athletic Bilbao 3-0 this weekend, with Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz both on target, and boss Mikel Arteta believes both players can play together and complement one another this season Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz can play in the same team after both players scored in their 3-0 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao. ‌ Arteta started new £64m striker Gyokeres up front and the Swedish international grabbed his first goal for the Gunners, getting up superbly to glance a header into the far corner. ‌ Havertz started the game on the bench but came on in the 71st minute before giving Arsenal their third and final goal as he slotted home under pressure after being put through on goal by Bukayo Saka. ‌ There will now be questions on how Havertz configures into the team following Gyokeres' arrival - and whether the German could now be sidelined or reduced to a bench option this season. But after the game Arteta was insistent that the two players could complement each other and pointed out that Havertz was a versatile player capable of playing in midfield too. "They can play together or Kai can play in different positions," the Spaniard said after the game. "It elevates the quality in the squad, the options we have in the team and the options to provide opposition with a lot of problems. Arteta went on to say that having multiple attacking options was a positive dilemma to have after going through last season without a recognised No 9. He said: "It's great to see them both scoring and both of them in such good form. It's a good problem to have." Havertz is hoping to kick on this season after his 2024-25 campaign was ended prematurely through injury. He knows there will be a fight for competition after Arsenal spent heavily on new arrivals, including £55m on Martin Zubimendi and a similar fee on Noni Madueke. ‌ Gyokeres is being backed to help Arsenal deliver a trophy this season after stunning individual campaign saw him score 54 times in 52 games for Sporting Lisbon. Arsenal were beaten 3-2 by Villarreal in their last pre-season game but Arteta said he was pleased with the team's response in this game - as he praised both Gyokeres and Havertz for their efforts and said it will help the entire team that everyone is "raising the level". "I am very happy with what I see," he said. "I think, individually, there was some big performances against a Champions League opponent. It's a good feeling. ‌ "That first goal is always very important and the way he (Gyokeres) took it as well, was really, really good. We are developing certain connections with the new players. It was very good. Kai came in and I think the goal he scored was top, as well. "Raising the level of everybody is going to really help us, because at that level, we are going to need our very best from everybody."
