Mumbai: Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) slumdwellers should be rehabilitated within a 10km radius of the park, deputy CM
Eknath Shinde
said on Wednesday. "As per the court's directive, all civic facilities should be made available...ensure
residents get spacious houses by providing additional FSI," said Shinde during a review meeting of Kurla and Chandivli assembly constituencies.
"The Gorakhdham site should be considered; it should be inspected and verified for rehabilitation," he added. Shinde also directed immediate repairs of MMRDA-built PAP buildings in Chandivli and said the 650-bed hospital, which is not yet operational, be handed over to BMC.
Shinde said suggestions and objections have been invited regarding redevelopment of buildings in the airport's funnel zone in Vile Parle. "The responses will be studied and the errors rectified while finalising the policy. Discussions will be held with the Airports Authority of India on retaining the joggers park in Vile Parle (E)," he said. — Chaitanya Marpakwar

MHADA invites tenders for cluster redevelopment of Kamathipura

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has invited tenders to appoint a Construction and Development Agency for the cluster redevelopment of Kamathipura, which will be implemented by the Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board (MBRRB), a unit of MHADA. Kamathipura is one of South Mumbai's oldest and most historically significant neighbourhoods. The MBRRB aims to provide permanent, safe and upgraded homes to 8,001 residents and compensate 800 landowners. The locality spans across 34 acres and consists of a narrow and aging colony which accommodates approximately 943 cessed buildings in 15 lanes. Most of these buildings are almost a century old. The scheme now represents a deviation from redevelopment of individual buildings to cluster renewal, as per Regulation 33(9) of the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) 2034. The redevelopment project of this cluster, supported by the Government of Maharashtra, will be conducted under the leadership of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister and Housing Minister Eknath Shinde. It is also being actively supported by Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, MP Arvind Sawant, MLA Amin Patel, as well as local residents. An official from MBRRB said, 'Upon completion, the project will reshape Kamathipura into a contemporary urban village. There will be not only residential apartments but commercial areas, recreational grounds and better infrastructure too.' As per the official, 44,000 square metres of land will be transferred to MHADA by the chosen developer. Approximately 4,500 new homes will be introduced into the city's housing stock through the redevelopment. The government approved the cluster redevelopment project through a resolution dated January 12, 2023, after which Mahimtura Consultants were engaged to prepare the blueprint. The project has been given the title 'Kamathipura Cluster Redevelopment – Urban Village.' The compensation for landowners has also been outlined by MHADA. According to a July 2024 government resolution, the landowners will be given dwelling units as per the landholding size, from a single 500 square feet unit for plots up to 50 square metres, to extra units for larger plots. 'The process of tendering is the first big step towards reviving Kamathipura and enhancing the lives of its inhabitants. MHADA wishes this project to act as a model for urban regeneration in heritage neighborhoods throughout Mumbai,' said the official.

Shinde directs MMRDA to alter Borivali-Thane twin tunnel plan

THANE: In a major development, the unity of over 10,000 citizens in Mulla Baug forced the political leadership and administrative authorities to change the location of the Borivali-Thane twin tunnel opening at the Thane end. Deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday directed MMRDA to extend the Thane-Borivali tunnel alignment by 225 metres up to the Satya Shankar wall instead of terminating it at Mulla Baug. The decision, aimed at easing the severe dust, noise, and traffic congestion in the residential area, came after repeated demands by the Project Affected People (PAP) Core Committee—a group that includes former MMRDA engineers and retired government officers. The committee had persistently advocated for environmentally responsible measures and alternatives, including underground construction and a safer muck disposal system. On May 20, residents secured a crucial meeting with MMRDA officials at the authority's BKC headquarters. Concerns raised during the meeting included increasing respiratory illnesses among residents—which they backed with medical proof—as well as the dangers of over 300 to 500 dumpers operating daily in the area. In response, MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee committed to a revised plan and set June 15 as the deadline for its submission. Ahead of the local body polls in Thane, political activity also took over, and NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Monday went to meet the Mulla Baug residents and extended his support to their demand. On Tuesday, a high-level meeting was convened, chaired by deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde. Also in attendance were Mukherjee, Thane MP Naresh Mhaske, Thane municipal commissioner Saurabh Rao, the Yuva Sena's Nitin Landge and members of the Mullabaug Residents' Association. One of the major outcomes of the meeting was Shinde's directive to MMRDA to extend the tunnel and also use an enclosed conveyor belt system to transport tunnel debris to minimise pollution and avoid clogging local roads. 'The extension of the tunnel will increase the cost but MMRDA should bear the cost for the benefit of such a large population,' he said. The muck will now be carried from Mullabaug, elevated six metres above the ground, and taken directly to the Unipex Company premises. From there, it will be loaded into dumpers and transported to disposal sites in Palghar via the Ghodbunder route, bypassing residential neighbourhoods altogether. To ensure timely execution, Shinde instructed MMRDA to appoint a nodal officer. He also directed officials to fast-track the acquisition of the Unipex land, which forms part of the proposed Development Plan (DP) road, essential to accommodate future population growth. Nitin Singh, a member of the PAP committee, said, 'We are happy with the decisions made by the deputy CM. The authorities finally listened to the health and safety concerns we have been raising for months. The conveyor system will greatly reduce pollution and traffic chaos.' Over the past few months, residents had mounted pressure by placing banners on their buildings and maintaining constant communication with the authorities. Their persistence has finally yielded results. The residents have now requested Shinde to personally visit the site to monitor implementation, which he has agreed to.

"Multi-party delegations were successful in exposing Pakistan before world": Eknath Shinde

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 11 (ANI): Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday said multi-party delegations, part of India's diplomatic outreach following Operation Sindoor, were successful in conveying India's stance against terrorism to the countries of the world. He welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with the members of the delegations. 'Yesterday, the PM appreciated all delegations which were responsible for putting forward India's stand and exposing Pakistan before the world. The PM listened to the experiences of members of all the delegations,' he added. Earlier yesterday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted members of seven multi-party delegations who went to several countries under Operation Sindoor outreach on Tuesday at his residence in New Delhi. Delegation members briefed the Prime Minister about their meetings in different nations. Seven groups of all party delegations, including Opposition MPs such as Supriya Sule of NCP-SCP, Shashi Tharoor of Congress party, AIMIM chief Asaddudin Owaisi, and former ambassadors, completed their diplomatic efforts to visit various world capitals and promote India's policy of zero tolerance against terrorism. The delegation was launched post Operation Sindoor, India's response to the Pahalgam attack in Jammu and Kashmir, in which 26 tourists were killed. Over 50 people, including members of Parliament from multiple political parties, former ambassadors, and former government officials, visited over 30 countries as part of India's diplomatic outreach post Operation Sindoor.
