Borussia Dortmund and Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer will be out for around four weeks with a knee injury, his club said on Sunday.
Dortmund had feared a longer lay-off.
The 30-year-old will miss both Austria's Nations League play-off games against Serbia on Thursday and Sunday.
He limped off during the 2-0 Bundesliga defeat by his ex-club Leipzig on Saturday having recently re-established himself as a starter under new Dortmund coach Niko Kovac.
