Mariners make up ground in AL West with win over Astros
The Mariners posted their fourth consecutive victory and pulled within four games of the Astros, who lead the American League West. Houston lost for the sixth time in its past seven games.
Castillo (7-5) won his third straight start. The veteran right-hander allowed three hits -- back-to-back singles to lead off the third by Mauricio Dubon and Brice Matthews as well as a one-out single by Victor Caratini in the seventh. Castillo walked two and struck out seven.
Arozarena gave the Mariners the lead with a solo shot to left field with two outs in the fourth off Houston starter Brandon Walter (1-3). It was the 10th homer in the past 14 games for Arozarena, who participated in the All-Star Game earlier this week in Atlanta.
That was the only run Walter allowed over six innings. The lefty, making just his eighth career start, gave up three hits, walked one and fanned seven.
Garver gave Seattle a 2-0 lead with a homer to straightaway center with two outs in the seventh off reliever Bennett Sousa.
The Mariners, who had won their previous three home games by shutouts, had their scoreless streak at T-Mobile Park snapped at 36 innings in the eighth.
Matthews drew a leadoff walk off reliever Matt Brash and scored on Isaac Paredes' double to left-center. Brash rebounded to strike out Cam Smith and got Jose Altuve and Christian Walker to fly out to shallow right field to get out of the inning.
The Mariners added four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. After drawing a leadoff walk off Steven Okert and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by fellow rookie Ben Williamson, Cole Young scored on J.P. Crawford's single to left field.
Hector Neris relieved Okert and walked Julio Rodriguez before Cal Raleigh lined a run-scoring single to right. After Raleigh stole second, Arozarena was intentionally walked, setting the table for a Donovan Solano sacrifice fly to left to score Rodriguez. Raleigh then came home on a wild pitch to provide the final score.

He retired the next 11 before Doyle's one-out single in the seventh but he got the next two batters to end his night. McGreevy, who was recalled from Triple-A Memphis before the game, allowed two runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out one. The seven-inning outing was his longest of the season. St. Louis rallied against Colorado starter Austin Gomber. Contreras hit the first pitch of the fourth inning into the seats in left-center, his 13th, and Arenado and Winn hit consecutive doubles later in the frame to tie the game. The Cardinals added a run in the fifth on an RBI double by Contreras and stretched the lead in the sixth. Arenado and Walker singled, Pedro Pages drove in Arenado with a single and Walker scored on Donovan's sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. That was all for Gomber (0-4), who gave up five runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out a season-high six and didn't issue a walk. The Los Angeles Rams bolstered their quarterback room on Monday by signing Dresser Winn to their roster. The 26-year-old Winn will be a familiar face around the organization given that it is his third stint with the Rams. On the previous two occasions, he has been on the practice squads. He has signed a one-year deal this time around with Sean McVay's team and will provide backup to Matthew Stafford alongside Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett. Between spells with the Rams, Winn played for the Edmonton Elks in the Canadian Football League and the Memphis Showboats in the 2025 UFL. At one stage, Stafford's future as the No. 1 starter for the Rams appeared to be in question. He first hinted that he could retire after the Rams lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the playoffs but the 37-year-old eventually agreed new terms worth $44million for the upcoming 2025 campaign. He was close to leaving before that deal was struck, however. He held talks with the New York Giants and the Las Vegas Raiders, where none other that Tom Brady was helping the team through its offseason overhaul as part of his role as a minority owner. But instead, he chose to stay in Los Angeles for what will be his 17th season in the NFL.

Salvador Perez hits two homers as Royals rout Cubs
July 22 - Salvador Perez went 2-for-5 with two home runs and four RBIs to help power the visiting Kansas City Royals to a 12-4 win against the Chicago Cubs on Monday. Starting pitcher Noah Cameron (4-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and struck out seven in six innings for the Royals. Cubs reliever Ben Brown (4-7), who replaced Ryan Brasier after the first inning in a bullpen game, was tagged with the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in four innings. Down by one, Kansas City grabbed the lead in the fifth and never looked back. John Rave reached on an infield force out, Kyle Isbel singled and Jonathan India doubled to drive in Rave and tie it 4-4. Isbel came around to score on Bobby Witt Jr.'s infield single for a 5-4 lead. Witt Jr. then stole second with Vinnie Pasquantino at the plate. Catcher Carson Kelly's throw to second went into the outfield, bringing in India to make it 6-4 and allowing Witt Jr. to advance to third. He scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 7-4. Rave increased it to 8-4 with a solo home run to right-center in the seventh inning. In the eighth, Perez's second two-run homer of the night made it 10-4, a single from Rave drove in Jac Caglianone and Rave scored on a force out, pushing it to 12-4. The Royals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Caglianone knocked a solo shot into the basket on the wall in left-center. The Cubs responded in the bottom half as Kelly homered to tie it 1-1. Dansby Swanson then singled, and Justin Turner doubled before Matt Shaw belted a three-run homer off the left-field pole to put the hosts up 4-1. With Maikel Garcia on base in the fourth, Perez homered for a third straight game, hitting a first-pitch fastball to left-center to narrow the deficit to 4-3.
