SAD leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema urges election commission to act against Manish Sisodia; demands AAP debarment in Punjab
Akali Dal
(
SAD
) leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema on Thursday urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take strict cognisance of Manish Sisodia's 'highly provocative utterances' and seek the cancellation of his bail in the corruption case.
He further demanded that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) be debarred from contesting in Punjab 'to save the sensitive border state from a repeat of the dangerous past.'
Cheema also pressed for strict and prompt legal action against Sisodia for allegedly inciting 'fraternal bloodshed' in Punjab.
'The Aam Aadmi Party's cat is finally out of the bag. The mask has fallen,' Cheema declared, alleging that AAP's 'deceptions, lies, false promises, and dirty tactics—like riots, violence, and money games—aimed at clinging to power in Punjab in 2027 have now been shamelessly and openly admitted by their top leader, Sisodia.'
He further alleged that ever since AAP entered Punjab in 2014, the state witnessed incidents of sacrilege. 'With their own MLA convicted for the 2016 Malerkotla sacrilege, is there still any doubt in anyone's mind about who was behind those incidents?' Cheema asked.
The SAD leader accused AAP of playing dangerous games by exploiting Punjabis' religious sensitivities and fuelling communal divisions for political gain. 'All this is now openly admitted. I call upon Punjabis to see through this dangerous game to set brothers against brothers in Punjab, especially among Sikhs, just to divide and weaken the Shiromani Akali Dal,' Cheema added.

SAD terms Chandumajra's speech an 'inadvertent confession' of conspiracy
1 2 Chandigarh: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday termed a recent speech by Akali leader and former MP Prem Singh Chandumajra as an "inadvertent confession" of a conspiracy by the rebel faction of the party. The remarks were made during the death anniversary event of Akali stalwart Harchand Singh Longowal. At a press conference, SAD leaders Daljit Singh Cheema and Maheshinder Singh Grewal played a video clip of Chandumajra — now aligned with the Giani Harpreet Singh-led parallel Akali Dal — where he recalled a meeting of leaders from the Sudhar Lehar faction. According to SAD, this faction was disbanded following a Dec 2, 2024, hukamnama issued by the Akal Takht at the residence of the late Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa. In the clip, Chandumajra is heard saying that Dhindsa had asked Giani Harpreet Singh to lead the Sudhar Lehar during that meeting. Cheema alleged that this meeting took place while Giani Harpreet was still adjudicating a complaint against Sukhbir Singh Badal , raising serious questions about conflict of interest and intent. Cheema and Grewal accused Giani Harpreet of participating in a "conspiracy to split the SAD" and form a breakaway faction under his leadership — well before the Akal Takht's edict. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo They called it a "massive betrayal" and urged Giani Harpreet to clarify whether he had informed then Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh about the meeting and the leadership offer. The SAD leaders also urged the Akal Takht to take cognisance of what they called an "inadvertent confession" and said it was a fit case for summoning Giani Harpreet Singh. Notably, Giani Harpreet Singh — then jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib — was among the five Sikh high priests who convened the meeting that led to the Dec 2 hukamnama. The edict had imposed tankhah (religious punishment) on Sukhbir Singh Badal, called for party unity, and initiated a membership drive to revive the SAD. Responding to the controversy, Chandumajra said his remarks were being "misinterpreted and twisted". He clarified that the meeting he referred to took place after Giani Harpreet was "unceremoniously" removed as Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib. He added that Dhindsa had proposed Giani Harpreet lead the fight for the sovereignty of the Akal Takht and autonomy of Panthic institutions. Gurpartap Singh Wadala, another leader from the parallel faction, also confirmed that the meeting occurred after Giani Harpreet's removal and amid personal allegations against him. In his speech, Chandumajra praised the gathering, saying it had "brought Dhindsa Sahib alive again" by nurturing the movement he had initiated. He also said that Wadala was appointed Sudhar Lehar convenor at Dhindsa's residence and credited Manpreet Singh Ayali with suggesting the faction's name. Chandumajra also lauded the five-member panel that oversaw the election of delegates and Giani Harpreet Singh as president, calling it an "unprecedented democratic process". Punjab slams Centre over GST losses, demands release of Rs 50,000 crore dues
CHANDIGARH: The AAP-led Punjab government on Thursday slammed the BJP-led Centre after the two-day GST GoM meeting, demanding immediate release of pending Rs 50,000 crore dues while accusing the GST regime of causing massive revenue losses to states. Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said GST has inflicted a Rs 1.11 lakh crore loss on the state and alleged that stopping the compensation cess was aimed at weakening state economies, forcing them to 'beg with folded hands' before the Centre. Cheema stressed that Punjab would not have suffered such massive revenue losses had it not joined the 'One Nation-One Tax' scheme. With the compensation cess now scrapped, he called out the BJP government for deliberately wrecking state economies to make them beg before the Centre. He said, "On August 20–21, the GST Group of Ministers met continuously for two days. On Wednesday, the meeting was on life and health insurance. In the evening, a meeting was held on compensation cess. The Chairman told us that today the meeting was on rate rationalisation, and that all members of the compensation cess would participate. Therefore, we also participated in Thursday's meeting.' He continued, "GST came in 2017. In the past eight years, there have been 27 amendments in GST, with exemptions given to different sectors. Fifteen times the GST rates of various goods were reduced. This practice has been continuing in the GST Council for the last eight years, and for the past three years I have been witnessing it myself.' Highlighting the Prime Minister's announcement, Cheema added, 'The Prime Minister declared that there would be two GST slabs - one at 5 per cent and another at 12 per cent - and everyone would celebrate Diwali. But after GST came, who will compensate for the loss suffered by Punjab and other states? Who will pay for this damage? One Nation, One Tax was the scheme of the central government, and all states, including Punjab gave their consent. Everyone agreed that uniform tax rates should prevail across the country so that no state could impose higher or lower taxes on its citizens. But this formula has inflicted a huge loss on Punjab.'

"Rule gives too much power to ruling party," AAP's Manish Sisodia on Constitution Amendment Bill to remove corrupt ministers
Manish Siosdia (PTI image) CHANDIGARH: AAP leader and former Delhi's deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia called the Bill new Bill, for the removal of the prime minister, chief ministers and ministers facing serious criminal charges, as 'positive' but warned it could be misused by agencies like ED and CBI. He added that AAP, being a party of honest leaders, always supported such strict measures. "The central government is bringing an amendment to the constitution in which they are saying that if any minister, chief minister, or prime minister of any state or even the central government is arrested on charges of corruption, then he should resign within a month or he will be removed. This is a good thing, but there are many possibilities that, just like ED and CBI have been misused, this bill will also be misused in the same way. Corrupt leaders should fear being removed. The Aam Admi Party is a party of staunchly honest people, so it will always consider such rules to be good...," he said. Sisodia said the Bill grants excessive power to the ruling party and emphasised that if a minister is not found guilty within 30 days, it proves false allegations. He added that those making such false accusations should face jail under the law. "However, this rule gives too much power to a ruling party... by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sore Knees? These Foods Could Be Your Natural Solution Undo While implementing this rule, it should be noted that if the minister is not found guilty even after 30 days, it implies that false allegations were made against him. So whoever makes the false allegation should go to jail...," he said. On Wednesday, Amit Shah introduced in the Lok Sabha the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, to further amend the Constitution of India and the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, apart from the bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The bills were sent to the joint committee of Parliament. The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, seeks to remove a central or state minister who is facing allegations of corruption or serious offences and has been detained for at least 30 days. Union minister Amit Shah tabled the Bill in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The proposed bill mandates the removal of any prime minister, chief minister, or minister who is detained for 30 consecutive days on charges punishable with at least five years of imprisonment. If the arrested leader doesn't resign, their office will automatically fall vacant after 31 days. Interestingly, the bill allows for re-appointment post-release, providing a degree of flexibility. Several Opposition MPs opposed the bills amid huge sloganeering, prompting the Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the House yesterday. Opposing the Bills, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi said, "I stand to oppose the introduction of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025. This violates the principle of separation of powers and undermines the right of the people to elect a government. It gives executive agencies a free hand to act as judge and executioner based on flimsy allegations and suspicions. " "This government is hell-bent on creating a Police State. This will be the final nail in the coffin of elected governments. The Indian Constitution is being amended to turn this country into a police state. The Chief Minister and the Ministers will not be accountable to the people," Owaisi added. Congress MP Manish Tewari claimed that the bill is destructive to the basic structure of the Constitution. "The basic structure of the Indian Constitution states that there must be the rule of law, and its foundation is that a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty. This bill makes an investigating officer more powerful than the prime minister of India. It violates Article 21 (Right to Life and Personal Liberty). It distorts parliamentary democracy, which is again part of the basic structure, by displacing the will of the people. This bill opens the door to political misuse by state machinery whose arbitrary actions have been repeatedly condemned by the Supreme Court. It throws all existing Constitutional safeguards to the winds. This makes the amendment unnecessary and unconstitutional," Tewari said. Congress MP KC Venugopal and home minister Amit Shah engaged in a verbal spat over the "morality" regarding the bills. Venugopal said, "This bill is meant to sabotage the basic principles of the Constitution. BJP members are saying that this bill is to bring morality into politics. Can I ask the Home Minister a question? When he was the Home Minister of Gujarat, he was arrested -- did he uphold morality at that time?"
