How Notre Dame football will score its annual Blue-Gold Spring Game on Saturday
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team will be back on the field this coming Saturday, and what you will see won't quite resemble what normal football looks like.
Mainly, it is due to the Irish trying to limit injuries, and with that in mind they will score the game much differently than we are accustomed to. In a social media post from Eric Hansen of Inside ND Sports, he broke down how Notre Dame will score its spring game.
A normal touchdown plus extra point will be seven points, but the offense will also get a point for each first down, two points for an explosive play over 20-yards, the normal three points for a field goal and two points for a two-point conversion.
On defense is where it gets very interesting, as typically the only points they would score is on a turnover. That won't be what we see on Saturday, as they'll get a point for forcing a punt, five points for a takeaway in plus territory, seven for a takeaway in minus territory, a whopping twelve points for a defensive touchdown, a point for a tackle-for-loss, two points for a sack, three points for blocking a field goal, two points for a point after touchdown return or failed two point attempts or a forth down stop or missed field goal and finally three points for a 4th down stop in minus territory.
All of these adjustments tell us that they'll like be testing the first team offense more than what we would normally see in a spring game, due to the fact that a starting quarterback has yet to emerge.
While these will be significantly different rules, we will get to see Notre Dame football back on the field, even though its just a tease until the regular season gets going.

Trailer for 'College Football 26' released, with game to include real-life coaches
After a successful first relaunch in 2024, the newest installation of EA Sports' "College Football" video game series will be back in full force this summer with some tweaks and changes. The trailer for "College Football 26" was released on Thursday, displaying some of the changes EA Sports made to the game following "College Football 25." Arguably, the biggest change in the game is that real coaches will be involved for the first time ever in the series. Over 300 current college football coaches, including assistants, lent their likeness for EA Sports to use in "College Football 26," according to a release. The release didn't share all of the coaches who agreed to be a part of "College Football 26." However, Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman, Ohio State's Ryan Day and Texas' Steve Sarkisian were seen in the trailer, while Penn State's James Franklin, Oregon's Dan Lanning and Georgia's Kirby Smart were among those named in the release. For the second straight year, thousands of players have agreed to lend their likeness for the "College Football" video game series. There will be over 2,800 new plays and "unique schemes" added to "College Football 26" from last year's game. The Wear and Tear feature also underwent changes, allowing users to "manage fatigue strategically and save your favorite playmakers for key moments with Dynamic Substitutions that allow you to rotate players in and out on the fly." In terms of game atmosphere, EA Sports also enhanced the Stadium Pulse feature for "College Football 26." In the newest edition of the game, there will be a more intense camera shake, new heads-up display visuals and a clock distortion that will force users to the high pressure of playing on the road at a hostile environment. Rivalry games, the College Football Playoff and high-stakes matchups will also be more impacted by Stadium Pulse. Other game features include the return of the Trophy Room (which shows all the trophies and accomplishments a user has won while playing the game) and Cross-Play across Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 in Dynasty Mode. Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams were named as the cover athletes for the standard version of "College Football 26" on Tuesday. The deluxe version of the video game includes a few more star players (such as Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik and LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier), coaches (such as Day and Smart), legends (Reggie Bush, Tim Tebow, Denard Robinson) and mascots, along with Smith and Williams. "College Football 26" will be available for purchase on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 10. The game can also be preordered now through the EA Sports MVP bundle, which includes the deluxe versions of "College Football 26" and "Madden 26," granting three-day early access to both games. Man United came close to signing Evan Ferguson in January
Manchester United launched a 'dramatic late approach' to sign Brighton & Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson in the January transfer window, according to a report. Ferguson, 20, has endured a frustrating time at the Amex Stadium in recent years after bursting onto the scene as the Seagulls' third youngest debutant ever following his debut against Cardiff City in 2021. He has since gone on to become Brighton and the Republic of Ireland's youngest ever scorer. Advertisement The following season, as a then 18-year-old, Ferguson scored six goals and provided two assists in 19 appearances in the Premier League for Brighton – an impressive return for such a young striker. But the Irish international demonstrated a predatory instinct which belied his years, while retaining a physical frame which made the introduction to men's football a smooth one. United were linked with a move the following summer in 2023 after Old Trafford scouts returned glowing reports on Ferguson. But this interest was never followed up and the Red Devils instead opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta in a deal worth £72 million. Ferguson's progress has halted since this point, however. As has the clamour for one of England's big clubs to sign the 20-year-old, though it is natural for a young striker's progress to not be linear. Advertisement In the first half of this season, Ferguson had played only a bit-part role for Brighton under Fabian Hurzeler, making 13 appearances with only one goal. Consequently, in the final week of January, with the winter window drawing to a close, the Seagulls 'made it clear…that their Republic of Ireland international would be available on loan,' according to The 42 – a reputable Irish sports outlet. West Ham emerged as the frontrunners for Ferguson with former Brighton manager Graham Potter, who handed the striker his debut at the Amex Stadium, now in charge of the Hammers. Bayer Leverkusen and Chelsea also expressed interest but it was the East London club who pulled ahead in negotiations, despite Ferguson preferring a move to Stamford Bridge. Advertisement 'Bayer Leverkusen in Germany were understood to be strongly in the frame for Ferguson at this stage but Chelsea remained the preferred destination for the player, right up until the night before he was actually was due for a medical at West Ham,' the report by The 42 details. However, West Ham's pursuit was almost hijacked by United who made 'firm advances' to sign Ferguson that the 20-year-old striker almost rejected the Hammers in favour of a last-gasp switch to Old Trafford. 'When Chelsea pulled out, other clubs are believed to have challenged West Ham even as the medical approached. Fulham wanted to do business, and it can be revealed that Manchester United made such firm advances late in the window to try and bring Ferguson to Old Trafford that he almost reneged on his commitment to West Ham, before ultimately sticking with the Hammers as it was so far down the line.' Ultimately, the Reds' dramatic move proved unsuccessful and the club were unable to sign a new forward for Ruben Amorim despite both Marcus Rashford and Antony leaving on loan. Advertisement United would finish the season in 15th in the league with unceremonious exits from both the FA Cup and, more crucially, the Europa League. It was the club's worst season in the Premier League era and they broke multiple records in terms of points, position, and losses. But it was also the lowest scoring campaign by a United season in the top division's history with just 44 goals across 38 games. Only four teams scored less than Amorim's side – Everton and the three relegated clubs, Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Southampton. The senior striking partnership of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee combined for just seven league goals, despite totalling fees in excess of £100 million across the last two summers. Rashford and Antony scored the same number of league goals for their adopted sides combined across four months of football, comparison. The need for a new forward in January was urgent, and it's an indictment on the current options at Old Trafford that an out-of-form 20-year-old striker for Brighton would still have provided an upgrade on them. Class of 2026 wide receiver Brian Williams Jr. has been turning heads since the beginning of the year, and it's no surprise to his trainer Kevin Wheeler. The Notre Dame target has been working out with the founder of HD Performance, and the Florida native's drive and determination have stood out. "He loves the position, he loves learning, he loves football and he's getting better," Wheeler said. "I've seen his consistency and his discipline and commitment to continue to work on his craft and get better as far as route-running, releases, learning coverages, and just learning all the nuances of playing the position. So that's what separates him from a lot of guys." The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Lake Mary High School (Lake Mary, FL) three-star product (No. 756 overall in the 247Sports Composite) shined in February's Under Armour Regional in Orlando, and then a ton of offers from major programs such as Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, Alabama and Auburn followed. Williams Jr. has already taken an official visit to Penn State and was at Florida this weekend. He will visit Alabama next weekend and Kentucky after that before an official visit to Notre Dame on June 20 with hopes that he will be joining his current teammate and Irish quarterback commit Noah Grubbs sometime soon. "He continues to grow and grow and grow," Wheeler said. "Like I said, his ceiling is just untapped. He could be very, very special. He's a special guy. He could be very, very good."
