Hong Kong may issue T1 warning on Friday as potential cyclone develops

Hong Kong Observatory will consider issuing a T1 typhoon warning signal on Friday and Saturday, urging the public to stay away from the shoreline and refrain from water sports.
The forecaster on Thursday said the area of low pressure to the north of Luzon would develop into a tropical cyclone in the coming few days and come within 800km (497 miles) of Hong Kong.
It said the cyclone would remain near the northeastern part of the South China Sea and intensify.
'Depending on its development and impact to Hong Kong, the Observatory will assess the need to issue the tropical cyclone warning signal later tomorrow to Saturday,' it said.
'There are uncertainties in its subsequent movement. It is more likely to turn northwards in the general direction of the vicinity of Taiwan to the coast of eastern Guangdong.'
The Observatory said there would be swells in the next couple of days.

Wet spell looms as typhoon heads for second landfall

Wet spell looms as typhoon heads for second landfall Typhoon Podul is expected to make landfall again over southern Fujian. Image courtesy of the Hong Kong Observatory Typhoon Podul is likely to bring downpours and thunderstorms to the city, the Hong Kong Observatory said. "Podul is moving across the Taiwan Strait. It is expected to maintain a distance of about 400 kilometres or more from Hong Kong [on Wednesday]," it said. "According to the present forecast track, Podul will make landfall again in the vicinity of southern Fujian overnight. "It will then move across inland Guangdong and weaken progressively [on Thursday] but will also be relatively closer to the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary at the same time." The weather forecaster also said it would assess the need to upgrade the Standby Signal No 1, issued at 8.40am, to a No 3 warning later. "Locally, there will be heavy squally showers and thunderstorms [on Thursday]. Showers will be more frequent in some areas at first," it said. "Depending on the weakening rate of Podul, its distance from the Pearl River Estuary and the change in local winds, the observatory will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal No 3 [on Thursday morning]." The Airport Authority said a total of 17 flights had been cancelled as of 2.30pm – nine between Hong Kong and Kaohsiung and eight between the SAR and Taipei.

Observatory issues T1 signal

Observatory issues T1 signal The observatory said it would decide whether to issue higher typhoon signals later on Wednesday to early Thursday. Graphic courtesy of the Hong Kong Observatory The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Standby Signal No. 1 at 8.40 am on Wednesday as Severe Typhoon Podul comes within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong. Forecasters say the No.1 Signal will remain in force during the day today and will assess the need to issue a higher signal tonight to tomorrow morning. "Depending on the distance between Podul and the Pearl River Estuary, its intensity and the change in local winds, the Observatory will assess the need to issue the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 tonight (13 August) to tomorrow morning (14 August)," a spokesman said in a statement. "Due to the fast moving speed of Podul, according to the present forecast track, Podul will make landfall again over the vicinity of southern Fujian to eastern Guangdong overnight." Podul is forecast to be closest to Hong Kong tomorrow morning. The observatory added that the subsiding air of the weather system will bring very hot weather with temperatures possibly rising to 35 degrees or above.

The weather forecaster raised the signal at 8.40am on Wednesday and said that it would assess the need to issue higher warnings later in the day or early Thursday. 'Under the influence of the outer subsiding air of Podul, it will be very hot during the day over Guangdong and heat-triggered showers will also affect the region later [on Wednesday],' it said. 'With Podul making landfall over the vicinity of eastern Guangdong to southern Fujian [on Thursday], its associated rain band will be rather close to the coast of Guangdong.'
