Is Tesla's sales slump in Australia over?
Tesla Australia has posted its strongest month of deliveries so far this year, and its first month without a year-on-year decline.
According to figures shared by Tesla to the Electric Vehicle Council, the US electric vehicle (EV) brand delivered 3897 vehicles in May 2025, up 9.25 per cent on May 2024.
However, following successive year-on-year declines, Tesla sales are still down a significant 48.1 per cent year-to-date.
The arrival of the updated 'Juniper' Model Y led to sales of Tesla's mid-size SUV soaring by 122.5 per cent last month compared to May 2024, with a total of 3580 examples delivered.

It was the brand's biggest month of deliveries since June 2024, when 4683 Teslas found new homes, and its mid-size SUV's strongest performance since March 2024 when it notched up 4379 deliveries.
But sales of the Model 3 sedan, despite receiving a similarly extensive update last year, have slumped 83.8 per cent year-on-year to 317 units.
Year-to-date, the Model Y is still down 27.4 per cent and sitting at 6974 deliveries, while the Model 3 is down by a whopping 70.7 per cent and sitting at 2583 deliveries.
The EV Council is the exclusive source of Tesla and Polestar sales data in Australia after the auto brands quit the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) last year.
The FCAI is responsible for the monthly VFACTS sales report, with May's results set to be published tomorrow. We'll be able to see, then, how close rival brands like BYD have gotten to Tesla.
Some rival brands like Deepal and Xpeng, however, don't yet report to VFACTS or the EV Council.
Despite its recent sales slump, the Model Y will likely maintain its stranglehold on the title of Australia's top-selling EV – an impressive feat given its ever-growing contingent of rivals – while the Model 3 could hold onto second spot.
Here's a breakdown of Tesla's inconsistent monthly sales volumes this year.
Another electric car brand Polestar, which also reports to the EV Council, posted a 66.4 per cent year-on-year increase in May.
The launch of the Polestar 3 large SUV (28 deliveries) and Polestar 4 mid-size SUV (133) have helped offset the slumping Polestar 2 fastback (82, down 43.8 per cent).
Overall, the brand is up 40.6 per cent so far this year, compared to January-May 2024.

Lunch Wrap: ASX creeps lower as IperionX lands Pentagon payday
ASX creeps lower despite miners lifting Lynas pops 8pc on China rare earths squeeze IperionX lands $152m Pentagon titanium deal The ASX inched lower by 0.1% at lunch time AEST on Thursday. Miners such as Fortescue (ASX:FMG), which was up by 1%, did the heavy lifting. And Lynas (ASX:LYC) went ballistic, up 10%, after a bit of good news for the rare earths space. Turns out some of Europe's biggest carmakers are starting to feel the pinch from China's rare earths export controls, and Lynas is quickly shaping up as a reliable alternative in a tightening market. In the US overnight, bond yields sank as traders piled into bets that the Fed might deliver not just one, but two rate cuts this year. September is looking like a sure thing now, and you could almost hear the doves cooing from Capitol Hill. Tech sentiment, meanwhile took a wobble after Apple was downgraded by Needham, who reckons it's falling behind in the AI race. Tesla dropped over 3% after Elon Musk went on a full-tilt political offensive, blasting Trump's new tax plan as a 'disgusting abomination' and telling Americans to 'kill the bill.' Back home to the ASX, where just five of 11 sectors were flashing green. The headline of the morning came from $1.4bn market-capped IperionX (ASX:IPX), the titanium player that just scored a golden ticket from the Pentagon. Shares in IperionX rocketed 21% after the company locked in a contract worth up to US$99 million with the US Department of Defense. It's a Phase III SBIR deal, what it really means is IPX has graduated from R&D to full-blown production. The first orders will focus on titanium fasteners for defence agencies, with all the kit built at its plant in Virginia. It's a big nod of confidence for Iperion X, and a win for the US as it tries to wean itself off foreign suppliers. Meanwhile, Magellan Financial Group (ASX:MFG) kept bleeding, but at least it's not gushing anymore. The fundie has just posted $400 million in outflows for May, down from $1 billion the month before. Assets under management inched higher across most of its strategies, with infrastructure holding steady. Total AUM now sits at $39.3 billion. It's still early days, though – most of the resource is in the lower-confidence 'Inferred' category, so there's no guarantee the uranium's all there or that it'll stack up economically just yet. ‘Kill the bill': Musk goes Tarantino on Trump
Washington: Tech titan Elon Musk ratcheted up his offensive against US President Donald Trump's signature tax bill, urging that Americans contact their lawmakers to 'KILL' the legislation. 'Call your Senator, Call your Congressman,' Musk wrote in a social media post on Thursday AEST. 'Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL.' To drive home the point, he also posted an image from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill films. The posts came a day after Musk lashed out at the tax bill, describing it as a budget-busting 'disgusting abomination' as Republican fiscal hawks stepped up criticism of the massive fiscal package. Trump hasn't publicly responded to Musk's comments, but the White House put out a statement Wednesday, Washington time, saying the 'Big Beautiful Bill' legislation 'unleashes an era of unprecedented economic growth'. And House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters that Musk is 'dead wrong' about the bill and that the tax cuts will pay for themselves through economic growth. Musk's public condemnation pits him against the president at a critical time as Trump is personally lobbying holdouts on the bill. His campaign against the legislation threatens to stiffen resistance and delay enactment of the tax cuts and debt ceiling increase. Musk has attacked the legislation days after leaving a temporary assignment leading the administration's Department of Government Efficiency initiative to cut federal spending. The Tesla chief executive officer's high-profile role in the Trump administration eroded his business brand and sales of his company's electric vehicles plunged.
