Venice hosts Jeff Bezos' grand wedding with stars, yachts and protests

Emma Bubola
Private jets soared above Venice's archipelago, and towering superyachts slipped through its lagoon. Caterers baked buttery Venetian delicacies while protesters schemed. Bomb-sniffing dogs prowled the verdant island of San Giorgio Maggiore, in front of the Doge's Palace. Venice, the city built by merchants and tradesmen, girded itself this week for the nuptials of the doge of commerce of the digital age.
Jeff Bezos, the billionaire tech entrepreneur, newspaper owner turned jacked tabloid fixture and A-list mingler, was set to celebrate his wedding to the energetic broadcaster Lauren Sánchez in a city that centuries ago set the standard for sumptuous, flashy ostentation.
From Thursday and for three days, the frescoed ancient homes of bankers and tradesmen that made Venice rich, now emptied of their residents and brimming with scented orchids, were ready to be turned over to influencers, rappers, pop stars and Ivanka Trump — all among the expected guests.
San Giorgio, where emperors once met with popes, would host the patron of Amazon.com.
City officials and business owners were proud, happy about the money and the prestige the event brings, and they welcomed the wedding, which was expected to stretch across several of the city's islands, as a confirmation of Venice's status as a world wonder.
But for many of the people who have made the uncommon choice to stay in an impractical city rendered almost unlivable by tourism in the easyJet age, the event was a climax of the city's betrayal, an American-size display of its contradictions. It was the capitulation of Venice's identity, they said, reduced to a glittery backdrop for the family photos of the world's new oligarchy.
Venice's left-leaning grass-roots groups, small but popular among its dwindling but determined residents, threatened to obstruct the wedding. The protesters, who have adopted the slogan 'No space for Bezos,' appear to have already met some of their goals. The party planned at the Scuola Grande della Misericordia, which the protesters intended to block, was moved to another location. The booking for Bezos' superyacht to dock in Venice was cancelled. Venice's authorities were furious about the protests, which they called 'reputational damage' to the city.
In many ways, Venice was a no-brainer wedding destination for the Bezos-Sánchez pair, who since their relationship became public six years ago have engaged in a global parade of affection and high-gloss good life. Venice, a city largely built as an unapologetic declaration of wealth and power, with gilded palaces in polychrome marbles, frescoes and canvases by Renaissance masters, designed to impress and entertain on a grand scale, seemed like a perfect fit.

US to hold QUAD Foreign Ministers meeting on July 1: State Department

By Reena Bhardwaj Washington DC [US], June 27 (ANI): Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host the Foreign Ministers from the QUAD countries on July 1 in Washington DC for the QUAD Foreign Ministers Meeting, the Principal Deputy Spokesperson for US Department of State Tommy Pigott announced on Thursday (US local time). Making the remarks during a press briefing, Pigott said, 'Next week, Secretary Rubio will host foreign Ministers from Australia, India and Japan for the 2025 Quad Foreign Ministers Meeting on July 1 in Washington, DC. The secretary's first diplomatic engagement was with the Quad, and next week's summit builds on that momentum to advance a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific. This is what American leadership looks like: strength, peace and prosperity'. Dhruva Jaishankar at ORF Washington DC, spoke to ANI about the expectations and impressions on the American priorities for the QUAD Summit. 'US relations with its Quad partners have been complicated of late, given differences with Japan over defense spending, Australia over AUKUS, and India over Pakistan. For these reasons, even maintaining the Quad agenda going forward is difficult, despite the US concentrating the groups's focus on security, prosperity, tech, and homeland security,' he said. The developments follow after, earlier on June 18, when US President Donald Trump accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to attend the QUAD Summit, which will take place in New Delhi later this year, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had previously informed. The telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump took place on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada. 'For the next meeting of QUAD, PM Modi invited President Trump to India. While accepting the invitation, President Trump said that he is excited to come to India', Misri had said in a video message. The QUAD is a diplomatic partnership between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States committed to supporting an open, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific that is inclusive and resilient. The QUAD's origins date back to our collaboration in response to the December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Earlier in January, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, on his first day in office, hosted the Foreign Ministers of Australia, India, and Japan for a significant meeting of the QUAD alliance. 'On day one as Secretary of State, I hosted the Foreign Ministers of Australia, India, and Japan for an important meeting of the Quad. We are committed to strengthening economic opportunity and peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region,' Rubio posted on X. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held the meeting with his Quad counterparts--External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Japan's Takeshi Iwaya, and Australia's Penny Wong--at the US Department of State. In a joint statement, the Foreign ministers of QUAD countries reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening a free and open Indo-Pacific where 'sovereignty and territorial integrity are upheld and defended.' The Quad nations also expressed strong opposition 'to any unilateral actions aimed at changing the status quo through force or coercion.' (ANI)

'If AI is the reason...': Viral post asks why companies are still asking for H-1Bs

A viral post claimed companies which are laying off are still looking for H-1Bs to hire. Amid a major layoff being announced by US companies, a post has gone viral which shows that Microsoft, one of the 10 companies employing foreign labor, sought 14,181 H-1Bs. The post shared the H-1B requirements of other companies, including Amazon, NVIDIA, Cisco, Goldman Sachs, Oracle, Apple etc. The post by investigative journalist Amanda Louise noted that despite tech layoffs, H-1B demand hasn't slowed down. "Microsoft just cut thousands of American they've already requested 14,181 more H-1B workers this year, and it's only Q2," the post noted. "If AI is the reason Americans are being let go, why are companies still asking for hundreds of thousands of foreign tech workers? Something doesn't add up." the post added. Social media users reacted to the post, starting the ongoing debate over H-1Bs eating up American jobs at a lower price. "AI: Another Indian," one comment read. "The obvious answer is the H1B system has ALWAYS only been about importing workers to drive down the wages of tech workers. This is why both parties, all the billionaires, and all the CEO's agree on this issue, they don't care about America - they only care about cheap workers!" one user wrote. "Any company that is firing people shouldn't be allowed to apply for H1B visas. There should be some kind of freeze period. This is just ridiculous," another wrote. "Not gonna say where I work but another big tech company. Our bosses frequently go to India on hiring sprees, while laying off thousands here. I need to learn how to farm and get a quiet place on the coast," one shared personal experience. In May, Microsoft announced cut of 6,000 roles targeting sales, management and non-coding roles. Intel plans to eliminate roughly 20 per cent of its workforce, which will come to around 21000 jobs. According to the latest data of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Trump administration selected 120, 141 H-1B visa applications for 2026.
