Wayanad Man Lost 11 Family Members In Landslide. Now, He Runs A Restaurant Named ‘July 30'
The catastrophic landslides that struck Kerala's Wayanad on July 30, 2024, wiped out 11 members of Kalathingal Noufal's family including his wife and three children.
The accident was life-changing for him. Now a year later, his story is one of grit, determination and massive support. Despite suffering such a huge loss, Naufal did not give up. He pulled himself together and decided to rebuild his life.
Today, the 43-year-old has found a new partner, started a restaurant — named 'July 30' — and got a new house, reported Indian Express.
Naufal was living in Mundakkai, the village in Wayanad that was totally wiped out in the landslides that claimed 298 lives, washed away houses and buildings.

He then decided to move his life forward and fulfil the dream of his late wife, Sajna, to settle in Kerala by starting a restaurant.
Initially, he was living in a temporary house. He also refused to meet counselors, as he felt that reliving the past every time would only increase his pain. He tried to heal his wounds on his own. During that time, Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM), a Muslim socio-religious organisation, gave him a financial aid of Rs 7 lakh.
Deciding to carry forward the wife's dream, he started a restaurant-cum-bakery, which he named 'July 30' in memory of the day that upended his life.
'When I named the restaurant 'July 30', many people criticised me. But everyone who goes to the affected areas should recall that day, the tragedy and the loss. That will make people humble and bring them closer to God," he told the news outlet.
Later, the Oman-based Kerala Muslim Cultural Center (KMCC) bought land for him and built a new house, the keys of which were handed over to him recently. After this, Naufal also married Safna, making a new beginning.

NCRTC launches Namo Bharat champions initiative to boost commuter engagement
New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) has launched a new initiative titled 'Namo Bharat Champions', aimed at fostering continuous improvement in services through active commuter participation, a statement issued on Wednesday said. The commuter engagement programme is based on the principle — 'for the commuters, by the commuters' — and seeks to build a collaborative platform that allows regular feedback and meaningful interaction from Namo Bharat users, the statement said. The NCRTC will under this initiative build a network of interested and like-minded commuters, who voluntarily wish to contribute towards enhancing services and infrastructure across the corridor. These champions will help promote responsible and efficient use of the Namo Bharat system and support its development through constructive suggestions and collaboration, it stated. The recognised Namo Bharat Champions, according to the statement, will also raise awareness about appropriate travel behaviour, available commuter facilities and essential do's and don'ts at stations and on trains. They will be provided with key information about the system along with important contact details for assistance when needed. The programme is also expected to function as a feedback channel to help the NCRTC continuously enhance services and commuter experience. The champions will also get access to exclusive engagement opportunities, including invitations to project launches, events and community meet-ups. The active participants may also be featured on the NCRTC's social media platforms and its official newsletter — Namo Bharat Times. The interested commuters can join the Namo Bharat Champions network by registering via QR codes displayed at stations or through the NCRTC's official website and social media platforms. The members upon registration will receive a welcome message and officially become part of the community, acting as ambassadors for responsible public transport usage, it added. Irrigation dept reports Kirari Suleman Nagar drain receives excess drainage, plans upgrade to prevent waterlogging
New Delhi: The irrigation and flood control department (IFC) has submitted a report to National Green Tribunal, explaining that the 7.8-km Kirari Suleman Nagar drain is receiving more drainage than its carrying capacity. The drain starts at Rohini Sector 20-21 and passes through densely populated, unauthorised and waterlogging-sensitive areas of Kirari and Mundka. The reply followed the Times of India's Nov 2024 report titled "How this 'river' of filth claimed teen's life", after a 13-year-old boy drowned in the drain near Rajendra Nagar Extension. It passes through densely populated, rapidly developing unauthorised colonies and Kirari and Mundka Assembly constituencies, which are waterlogging-prone," the reply dated July 29 said. The department said that over Rs 58 crore was sanctioned to redesign the drain in the Kirari area to resolve the waterlogging problem. The irrigation department also said that due to the rapid increase of unauthorised colonies in Kirari and Mundka, the drain also carries wastewater in addition to stormwater, including sewage and household waste discarded by residents. The scheme amounting to Rs 629.9 lakh has been approved. The schemes envisage the demolishing and reconstruction of culverts resulting in the obstruction of free flow of the drain," the irrigation department said. It also added that the department has taken up the maintenance and removal of floating material, garbage and obstruction through tender, with proper removal of silt, cow excreta, MSW, and floating materials from the bank, to ensure smooth flow in the drain throughout the year. Meanwhile, in a separate submission on the same matter, the sub-divisional magistrate, Punjabi Bagh, West district, submitted that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh was sanctioned for the family of the deceased.
