Jonassen, Wei Feng catch up in Ipoh amid BAM vacancy buzz

KUALA LUMPUR: A meeting between national singles coaching director Kenneth Jonassen and ex-national shuttler Chong Wei Feng in Ipoh has fuelled speculation that the latter could return to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as a coach.
Jonassen and his assistant K. Yogendran were in town to monitor junior shuttlers at the ongoing National Under-18 Championships. Wei Feng is there guiding four of his players from his Klang Valley-based academies.
Their casual chat was later highlighted on the Shuttle Flash Badminton Academy's Instagram page, sparking talk of a possible return for Wei Feng, who won the men's singles gold at the 2015 Singapore Sea Games.
However, Jonassen played down the buzz.
"I'm in Ipoh to observe the early rounds, and I caught up with Wei Feng. No, we didn't talk about the women's singles coaching vacancy," said Jonassen.
"It was just a friendly catch-up. As for the coaching role, we're not rushing. We'll wait for the right candidate."
Wei Feng told Timsport on April 7 that BAM had reached out with a coaching offer.
But on Wednesday, he echoed Jonassen's remarks, stressing that their conversation was informal.
"I've known Jonassen since my playing days and hadn't seen him since he arrived in January. We chatted during my players' training session, nothing about a job offer," said Wei Feng.
"We spoke in general about the juniors, how many lack self-belief and struggle with pressure, which affects their results. But it wasn't anything official.
"I can't commit to a coaching job right now. I am guiding several players full-time."
Jonassen's patience in filling the position could work in Wei Feng's favour. It gives him time to identify suitable coaches to take over at the Chong Wei Feng and Shuttle Flash academies.
His four players — Chee Hong Wei, Chua Yi Xuan, Kee Is Qian, and Liew Zheng Hao — are competing in the boys' singles at the Under-18 event.
Jonassen and Yogendran will leave for Xiamen, China, on Thursday with the national shuttlers for the Sudirman Cup, which starts on Sunday.

Tat Meng, Mee Fen raise concerns after Asian Junior Championships failure

PETALING JAYA: Former coaches Wong Tat Meng ( pic ) and Ng Mee Fen have raised concerns regarding the junior shuttlers' poor performance in the Asian Junior Championships in Solo, Indonesia, which ended on Sunday (July 27). Malaysia had a disappointing outing, returning home empty-handed from the tournament for the second time in the past three editions after a similar failure in 2023. Tat Meng, who was singles coach in the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) from 2003 to 2011 and 2013 to 2016 and Mee Fen, who was a junior coach in the national team for four years, expressed their concern via social media over the poor outing, especially in the singles. None of the players in the boys' and girls' singles even made it into the quarter-finals in the individual event. "Am I the only one who wonders what happened to our junior player's performance in the Asian Junior meet in Solo?" questioned Mee Fen. "It's worrisome, especially in the singles department. Most of our current senior players can play for another Olympic cycle, but we have yet to identify the junior players who can replace the seniors in five years' time. "Challenging time ahead for the juniors, and hopefully actions will be taken to improve the standard of the players before it's too late." Tat Meng, who responded to Mee Fen's post, said: "Thanks for raising this. You're definitely not the only one concerned." "I'm actually here in Solo watching the Asian Junior meet, and I have to say, it was disappointing and quite sad to see that none of our singles players made it to the quarter-finals. "Even though I'm no longer based in Malaysia, I still care deeply, especially having been part of the national coaching set-up in the past. "It really makes me question what has been going wrong with our junior development system for the past how many years? I don't know. "We have talent, no doubt but something fundamental isn't translating into results at the international level. "It's time for an honest review and a clear long-term direction. Otherwise, we risk an even more serious gap in our singles department moving forward," added Tat Meng.

"Wasn't about glory, wasn't about stats...": Heroes of 'Manchester Miracle' take to social media as series stays alive

Manchester [UK], July 28 (ANI): Following a miraculous draw at Manchester's Old Trafford Stadium during the fourth Test, Team India's heroes of the match took to social media, expressing their emotions following what was one of the hardest-fought Tests for the unit in a long while. To keep the series alive and kicking, India pulled off a miracle at Manchester, with centuries from skipper Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar helping India dig deep and eke out a 114-run win despite trailing by 311 runs after the first innings. India's stubborn resilience and grit rattled the Englishmen and served the visitors a massive psychological advantage ahead of the final Test at The Oval, where they can draw the series. Skipper Gill, who produced one of the finest knocks of his career in the second innings after three successive failures, took to Instagram, posting pictures with the caption, 'Clutch.' His opening partner, KL Rahul, who posted a brilliant 230-ball 90 in the second innings, formed a 188-run partnership for the third wicket after two early wickets, also posted on Instagram saying, 'Hard fought 5 days. On to the next one.' Wicketkeeper-batter and vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who pulled off one of the greatest acts of bravery and resillience by walking out to bat despite an injured foot and made a half-century, posted on Instagram that while the result was not the one 'they came for, but not the one they will walk away from.' 'Wasn't about glory, wasn't about stats. Not the result we came for, but not one we'll walk away from. The fight was real till the very end #RP17,' posted Pant on Instagram. Sundar, who scored his maiden Test and international ton during a double century stand with Jadeja, expressed his gratitude towards god following the knock, posting, 'Grateful for the people and forever grateful to you, God.' Coming to the match, England opted to field first. Half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (58 in 107 balls, with 10 fours and a six), Sai Sudharsan (61 in 151 balls, with seven fours) and Rishabh Pant (54 in 75 balls, with three fours and two sixes) took India to 358 runs, with Stokes (5/72) troubling the visitors with timely wickets and not letting a massive partnership happen. Jofra Archer also took 3/73. In the second innings, Zak Crawley (84 in 113 balls, with 13 fours and a six) and Ben Duckett (94 in 100 balls, with 13 fours) produced a 166-run stand for the opening wicket, sending India on leather hunt. The presence of Joe Root (150 in 248 balls, with 14 fours) and Stokes (141 in 198 balls, with 12 fours and a six) aggravated Indian bowlers, who saw these two produce milestone after milestone on their way to a 311-run lead. England was skittled out for 669 runs, with Ravindra Jadeja (4/143) being the pick of the bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah (2/112) had an off day at work. After Chris Woakes reduced India to 0/2, KL Rahul (90 in 230 balls, with eight fours) and skipper Shubman Gill (103 in 238 balls, with 12 fours) caused England's faces to tense, batting three sessions for an 188-run stand. After these two were done, the spin all-rounder duo of Jadeja (107* in 185 balls, with 13 fours and a six) and Washington Sundar (101* in 206 balls, with nine fours and a six) rattled and frustrated England with their resolve and wall-like presence, taking India to a 114-run lead, ending at 425/4 in a draw. The series is still alive at 1-2, with the final match at The Oval to start from July 31. (ANI)

Confusion over Kelantan team's rebranding draws FIFA's attention

PETALING JAYA: The rebranding confusion involving several Kelantan football teams has attracted the attention of the world football governing body FIFA. It had issued a show-cause letter to Kelantan Red Warrior (KRW), who were set to compete in the Semi-Pro League A1. The letter requests clarification about KRW's identity and how it differs from earlier Kelantan-based teams, especially Kelantan FC, which was previously owned by entrepreneur Norizman Tukiman and still has unresolved debts. Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) general secretary Datuk Noor Azman Rahman confirmed on Sunday (July 27) that they had received a letter from FIFA and handed it over to KRW on Friday. "Yes, we received a letter from FIFA regarding Kelantan KRW and have forwarded it to them for further action. "I can't disclose further details, but the issue is not related to player claims. It is linked to a previous club, Kelantan FC. "FIFA have identified certain concerns, which may be connected to the former team," said Azman. The deadline for KRW to respond to FIFA's letter was on Monday (July 28). KRW was established in December last year by Nik Hafiz Naim Nik Hassan, who was previously a co-owner of Kelantan FC alongside Zamsaham. It was understood that the similarity in logo, team identity and even jersey design between KRW and the defunct Kelantan FC was among the reasons FIFA requested clarification. Kelantan FC were effectively dissolved last year after being relegated from the 2023 Super League. The team were also barred from competing in last season's A1 Semi-Pro League due to heavy debts. Former team president Tan Sri Annuar Musa later revived Kelantan's presence in the Super League by introducing a new identity under the name Kelantan The Real Warriors.
