Virat Kohli 'Wanted To Continue But BCCI...': Ex-India Star Makes Colossal Claim After Sudden Retirement
Former India captain Mohammad Kaif has claimed that Virat Kohli might not have gotten the backing he anticipated from the BCCI and selectors, which in turn led to him ending his Test cricket career with immediate effect. Kohli, who scored 9,230 runs in 123 matches at an average of 46.85, wrote on Instagram on Monday that he would be retiring from Tests with immediate effect. His decision comes just five days after India captain Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket.
'I think he wanted to continue in the format. There must have been some internal talks with the BCCI, the selectors may have cited his form in the past 5-6 years and told him his spot in the team may no longer be there. We will never find out what happened, it is very difficult to guess what actually took place behind the scenes.'
'But given the last minute decision, having played the Ranji trophy, I definitely think he wanted to come back in the upcoming Tests. The developments in the last few weeks, he may have not gotten the support he thought he will get from BCCI and selectors which he may not have gotten,' said Kaif in an exclusive conversation with IANS.
In recent times, Kohli had struggled to make consistent runs in Tests. He scored 190 runs in nine innings of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, which India lost 3-1. 100 of those runs came in an unbeaten second innings knock at Perth. Kaif felt Kohli being in a hurry to score runs in Australia was also an indication that his Test career was coming to a swift end.
'In the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he looked in a hurry to score runs. You have to stay out for hours and grind in Test cricket, which he has done in the past but the constant edging of the ball moving away from him while attempting to drive, made me feel his patience was a bit less.'
'Maybe he was thinking 'I am in the last phase of my career what's the point of scoring a gritty century, there used to be a different level of patience on display from him before, he used to leave the balls, take his time, tire the bowlers and then took them down but I did not see that from him in Australia'.'
'That one method of dismissal at the slips perhaps shows that he was not ready to spend hours at the crease. The communication from BCCI and the self-realization in red-ball cricket may have led to the decision,' he elaborated.
While Kaif was certain about Rohit retiring from Tests after making himself unavailable for the Sydney Test earlier this year, he still expressed surprise over Kohli leaving the longer format. 'On the other hand, Virat's decision left me confused. Yes in his Test career his numbers have come down in the past few years but a 36-year-old fit Virat Kohli could have comeback like he has proved before.'
'It felt he would play for a few years, guiding the youth players. This is a very private decision, he always used to say that it is his favourite format. If you look at any interview of his he always used to ring praises of the Test format.'
'He used to enjoy it because he used to love the gruelling challenge and he often encouraged the youngsters to follow his route to keep Test cricket from dying. He used to tell youngsters to earn the Test cap and it highly benefited Indian cricket,' concluded Kaif.

How Jasprit Bumrah Can Play All Five Tests vs England: "Can Be Preserved If..."
Former Indian bowling coach Bharat Arun spoke on pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's workload management during the England tour of five Test matches. He said that with good support from other bowlers and toned-down training sessions, he could be available to play all the matches on an all-important tour that marks a new era in Indian cricket. The five-match Test series against England will kick off from June 20 at Leeds. Heading into the series, there are question marks over which Tests the superstar bowler will play. During India's last overseas assignment in Australia, Bumrah did play all five Tests, racking up a record-breaking 32 wickets at an average of 13.06, but he walked off from the field midway the final Test at Sydney, during which he was captaining, denting India's chances of securing a series draw and consequently, lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to Australia by 1-3. After missing first four games in the recently-concluded Indian Premier League (IPL), Bumrah made a return against eventual champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), taking 18 wickets in 12 matches at an average of 17.55 and becoming the heart of the franchise in their run till Qualifier two, where they lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS). During the pre-departure presser ahead of the tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir said no call had been made about which matches he would play in the series. "We have not taken that call, which three games is he going to play?" Gambhir said during a pre-departure press conference, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. "We are going to discuss with him, and depending on the series as well. A lot will depend on the results of the series, where the series is heading. That is something which I am sure he is very well aware of as well, and that is important," he added. Speaking with Revsportz' Boria Majumdar, Arun said that too much bowling or too less of it, both can cause injury to a bowler. "They are a perfect recipe for some bowler to get injured. So, obviously, we cannot control the number of overs that Jasprit Bumrah bowls in a match." "But according to the number of overs he bowls in the match, the practice sessions can be toned down for him where he needs to be working on his recovery. It can be a strength training session in the gym or some recovery work with the physios." "So, handling him will be very crucial. And as you rightly mentioned, Bumrah's presence in the team adds a huge value. Not only does he does well, he also rallies the other bowlers," continued the former bowling coach. Arun also said that confidence in Bumrah adds a lot of value in the team. "So, ideally, I would expect him to play all the Test matches. If there is very good support from the other bowlers, Bumrah can be preserved and play in all the five Test matches. If he is going to be bowling, taking a lot of the workload, then I am afraid he will not be ready for all the five Tests. So, how the other bowlers support him becomes very vital. So, we have got to take it as you go, rather than saying he is good for first three Test matches, then you need to give him a break. The other bowlers can help Bumrah play in all the Test matches if they are bowling really well," he concluded. The Test squad includes Mohammed Siraj (100 wickets in 36 Tests), Prasidh Krishna (eight wickets in three Tests), Akash Deep (15 wickets in seven Tests), and Arshdeep Singh (uncapped) as the main fast bowlers. Also, Nitish Kumar Reddy (five wickets in five Tests) and Shardul Thakur (31 wickets in 11 Tests) have been picked as seam-bowling all-rounders. In a combined 62 Tests, they fail to outdo Bumrah's Test tally, having taken 159 scalps combined. Bumrah has taken 205 scalps in 45 Tests at an average of 19.40, with best figures of 6/27 and 13 five-wicket-hauls. The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. This will be India's first bilateral Test series since both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from Test cricket earlier this month. The team is undergoing a transition, with Shubman Gill taking over as captain and R Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli stepping away from the longest format. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

IND vs ENG: Not KL Rahul! This star batter may open with Yashasvi Jaiswal in England Tour as Australian legend says...
In this collection of pictures we shall know the star batter who might open with Yashasvi Jaiswal in England Tour. Interestingly, it's not KL Rahul. Let's dive in. KL Rahul has staked his claim to be the opener in the Test series against England by scoring a century while opening the innings against England Lions. He opened the innings for India-A in the second unofficial Test match against England Lions and scored 116 runs in the first innings. However, a 23-year-old explosive batsman is also in the race to become Yashasvi Jaiswal's partner. This batsman showed with his stormy batting in the recently concluded IPL 2025 that he is adept at opening the threads of the ball. Former Australian captain and great batsman Ricky Ponting has also supported this young batsman to become Yashasvi's opening partner. The Indian cricket team will take the field in the first Test of the five-match Test series against England on June 20. This is going to be a new phase for the Indian team under the leadership of new Test captain Shubman Gill. After the retirement of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, there are going to be many big changes in the batting unit, in which many young faces will also be seen. However, after Rohit's retirement, the opening spot is a big question as to who will open with Yashasvi Jaiswal. Veteran batsman KL Rahul opened in four out of five Tests in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in which runs also came from his bat. In such a situation, it is being speculated that now after Rohit Sharma's retirement, the management can field him as an opener. However, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has chosen Sai Sudharsan for this role. Ponting said that this is the right time to give this 23-year-old a chance to debut in the longest format. He believes that Rahul's experience will help the team in the middle order. Let us tell you that Sai Sudharsan has not made his Test debut for India. However, he has made his debut for India's white ball team. In IPL 2025, this explosive batsman scored a lot of runs and won the Orange Cap with 759 runs. Speaking to the Indian Express, Ponting said, "I said this because if they go with (Yashasvi) Jaiswal and if Sai Sudharsan is the second opener, then they need another experienced player at number three. So KL can be at three or Karun Nair can be at three and Shubman can be at four... once you are set in this, you can take yourself back to number three." The veteran further said, "I think it is the right time for Sudharsan to come into the team, honestly. Now there are going to be some changes in the Indian team, obviously with Rohit and Virat not being there. Every team goes through this phase... I think Sudharsan is ready."
