Supreme Court refuses to reduce sentence of advocate who abused woman magistrate in 2015
A bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan recorded that it is 'not inclined to interfere with the orders' passed by the Delhi High Court against advocate Sanjay Rathore and dismissed his plea.
In October 2015, the complainant judicial officer was serving as a metropolitan magistrate in the Karkardooma court when Rathore, enraged by an adjournment in his matter in his absence, verbally abused the officer, including using gendered abusive language. An FIR was subsequently lodged at the Farsh Bazar police station.
Rathore was sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment under Indian Penal Code Section 509 (intending to outrage modesty of a woman), three months under Section 189 (injury to public servant), and an additional three months under Section 353 (assault or criminal force against public servant to deter them from their duty). It was directed that the sentences should run consecutively, thereby resulting in a total sentence of two years.
The Delhi High Court, while refusing to reduce the sentence, however, modified it so that the sentences could run concurrently instead of consecutively. As a result, Rathore was sentenced to a total of one year and six months in prison.
The high court, in its order of May 26, emphasised that acts threatening or intimidating a judge, especially through 'gender-specific abuse, is an assault on justice itself, and must be met with firm accountability'.
While refusing Rathore any relief, it further recorded in its order, 'The act of outraging the modesty of a judicial officer while she was presiding over court proceedings, seated on the dais and discharging her solemn duty of dispensing justice, in this court's opinion, attacks the very foundation of judicial decorum and the institutional integrity.'

DUSU polls to be held on September 18, results next day
The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) polls will be held on September 18, DU Registrar Vikas Gupta announced in a notification on Wednesday. As per the notification, the last date for submitting nomination papers is September 10. On the same day, the list of duly nominated candidates will be published. The withdrawal of documents has been scheduled for September 11, and the final list will be issued on the same day. Polling will take place on September 18 and votes will be counted on September 19. The announcement comes amid protests by student outfits against the university's decision mandating that the candidates deposit a ₹1-lakh bond at the time of filing nomination promising not to deface public properties while campaigning. The ₹1-lakh bond is part of DU's anti-defacement measures, issued a year after the Delhi High Court came down heavily on the university for property defacement. Student groups, such as RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and Aam Aadmi Party's Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), have opposed the move and termed it 'undemocratic'. Earlier in the day, the ABVP submitted a memorandum to the university demanding the withdrawal of the bond. 'Imposing a ₹1-lakh bond to contest the elections is not only undemocratic but also a malicious attempt to limit the elections to only the affluent students,' it said. ABVP national media convener Harsh Attri said they held a meeting with the Registrar, and he assured them of 'looking into their demands'. Reviewing options: DU The Registrar told The Hindu that they are considering alternatives to the anti-defacement measure. 'We are in the process of looking into possible alternatives, such as a guarantee from students instead, after multiple requests from students. We had introduced the measure in pursuance of the Delhi High Court's recommendations,' he said. Terming the anti-defacement measure a 'Tughlaqi farman', Kuldeep Bidhuri, the Delhi unit president of ASAP, described it as a 'conspiracy to directly block middle-class students from contesting elections'. Meanwhile, the NSUI staged a demonstration on the campus demanding 12 days of menstrual leave per semester for women students.

No illegal loudspeaker in any place of worship in Sambhajinagar city
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: In what the police describe as a first-of-its-kind achievement for the city, authorities successfully removed all illegal loudspeakers from places of worship within the jurisdiction of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city police. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Police commissioner Pravin Pawar told TOI on Wednesday that a total of 6,591 loudspeakers installed at various religious sites were removed following a sustained awareness and persuasion drive. "Today, there is no illegal loudspeaker at any religious place in the city," Pawar said, adding that the police worked with religious heads, social workers, and politicians before approaching individual places of worship. "This was not about confrontation; it was about convincing everyone to abide by the law," said Pawar. The exercise comes against the backdrop of statewide directives to enforce the Supreme Court and high court rulings on permissible sound levels, along with the Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules. Starting in July, the police issued notices and held meetings at the levels of police stations, division, and zone levels, with some even escalating to the level of the police commissioner. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Ratnakar Navale said the Sambhajinagar police drive focused on educating stakeholders about the legal provisions. "We highlighted the directives of the Supreme Court, the Bombay HC, the Noise Pollution Rules, and orders from the director general of police's office. The best part is that people readily cooperated and removed all the loudspeakers themselves," Navale said. According to senior officers, no force or confiscation was necessary during the operation. "We achieved 100% compliance purely through dialogue and mutual respect," a senior officer said. The move has been welcomed by environmental activists, who point out that it will reduce ambient noise levels in densely populated areas. City police officers said they will continue monitoring to ensure no unauthorised loudspeakers are reinstalled.

Influencer With 1.2 Million Instagram Followers Arrested In Rs 40-Crore Laundering Case
New Delhi: An 'entrepreneur' with over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, whose bio also states that she is an actor, has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a Rs 40-crore money laundering case. The case against Sandeepa Virk stems from a first information report (FIR) lodged at a police station in Mohali under Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code, in which she was accused of defrauding individuals by soliciting money under false pretences and through misrepresentation. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out search operations on Tuesday and Wednesday at multiple locations in Delhi and Mumbai in connection with the money laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. According to the ED, Ms Virk is accused of acquiring immovable properties through fraudulent means. She projected herself as the owner of a website claiming to sell FDA-approved beauty products. However, investigators found that the products were non-existent, the website lacked user registration features, faced persistent payment gateway failures, and had negligible social media presence. Additionally, its WhatsApp contact number was inactive, and no transparent company details were available - pointing to a non-genuine commercial operation allegedly used as a front to launder funds. The ED's probe also revealed Ms Virk's alleged links with Angarai Natarajan Sethuraman, a former director of the now-defunct Reliance Capital Limited. Search operations at Mr Sethuraman's residence allegedly confirmed his role in "illegal liaising work" and diversion of funds for personal gain. The agency said that, in 2018, public funds worth approximately Rs 18 crore from Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd (RCFL) were disbursed to Mr Sethuraman without due diligence and under highly irregular lending terms that allowed deferments and multiple waivers. In addition, a Rs 22-crore home loan was allegedly sanctioned by Reliance Capital Limited in violation of prudential norms. Investigators said large portions of these funds were siphoned off and remain unpaid. In a statement to news agency PTI, Mr Sethuraman dismissed the allegations as "baseless". He also denied any connection with Ms Virk or any transactions related to her. During the raids, the ED seized incriminating documents and recorded statements of several key individuals, including one Farrukh Ali. Ms Virk was arrested on August 12 under provisions of the PMLA and produced before a court, which sent her to ED custody until Friday. ED officials said the potential involvement of other individuals is also being investigated.
