Proton-Grab tie-up grows stronger with S70, premium X-Series for E-Hailing segment

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd and Grab Malaysia have expanded their strategic partnership to further support the e-hailing community.
The collaboration now includes more Proton model options, such as the Proton S70 and premium X-Series models, providing Grab driver-partners with greater variety as they continue earning on the platform.
This builds on the success of the "Saga Power Up for Grab Driver-Partners" campaign launched in Nov 2024, which has so far generated 220 leads and recorded 148 vehicle registrations for the Proton Saga.
According to Proton, the continued partnership reflects strong demand for its vehicles in the e-hailing segment and supports the shared goal of modernising Malaysia's ride-hailing industry with affordable and reliable cars.
Driver-partners can now choose from a wider selection of Proton models, including those under the GrabCar Plus and GrabCar (6-Seater) categories.
To help ease the cost of vehicle ownership, the partnership also offers incentives such as cash rebates of up to RM13,000, a 5 per cent service discount for the first two years or 40,000 km, and RM500 in fuel support.
Proton Edar deputy sales director Ong Chee
Wooi said Proton is thrilled to make its S70 and premium X-series models more accessible to Grab drivers.
"For gig workers, this comprehensive programme extends beyond exclusive benefits to assurance of driving Proton cars.
"Its reliability and affordable maintenance costs are important factors for those who use cars as their primary working tools," he said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Grab Malaysia's director of country operations and mobility, Rashid Shukor, said the collaboration has made it easier for its driver-partners to access vehicles, enabling them to earn and
support their families while meeting the growing demand for rides.
He added that by extending to the S70 and premium X-series models, drivers now have the chance to elevate their driving experience, upgrade their vehicles, and cater to an even broader consumer base.
"We look forward to continuing this journey together to build a future where opportunities are accessible to all," he said.

Grab driver vs foreign passenger over change dispute goes viral

A video of a passenger refusing to provide small change for his RM50 note to pay off his Grab driver has gone viral on Reddit. The dispute, led to a shouting match between the passenger and the Grab driver who didn't have any small change to give back to the man. 'What is so hard for you to go down and grab some small change from the shop,' the Grab driver said. 'It is your job to change and give me my change,' said the passenger who is reportedly a foreign national. The Grab driver eventually filed a report to Grab where he was told not to argue with the man further and mentioned a way to settle the dispute. Thankfully, the situation was resolved and the Grab driver told the passenger to get out of his car. The video sparked a conversation about whether Grab drivers should have small change prepared for their passengers or whether passengers should have the courtesy to grab small change to pay off their Grab driver. User @Crazy_Ad_4921 said the driver maybe couldn't stop his car and go down to grab small change. 'Maybe he felt scared his car would be stolen. Maybe he's scared the money is fake. The driver should have prepared loose change and the passenger didn't need to act like a diva,' he said. @PaleontologistThin27 said both should grab small change. 'If I'm the driver, I sure won't be leaving a stranger alone in my car,' he said. @launchuntoi said there isn't a concrete procedure as he feels its a give and take situation. 'There are times where business shop owners request for him to change and there are times when they would go do that. 'In this case, both don't want to give in, so we have to see which party will be more at loss for wasting time,' he said. @HeroVax said 'I took a taxi. I only had big bills. But the driver doesn't have change. So I said, can you keep running the meter while I go to the shop to change it. Then I came back and paid my due. 'There's nothing wrong with making people's lives easier. I don't know why this cameraman guy doesn't just back off.' @solblurgh simply said, 'Online transfer je lah.' @RussoBong gave a mixed opinion and said Grab drivers should be ready in case customers want to pay cash. But for safety reasons, Grab might encourage them to not carry so much cash too. On the flip side, the passenger could be a bit more accommodating to try and see if there is a shop nearby where he can change. He said the world would be a better place if everyone just tried to get along better but suspected the driver to be more at fault as he gave false info to the Grab support. He hoped it wasn't a case of racism against the passenger but said we don't know what happened before the recording started. @SnooOranges6925 said that drivers are not an ATM machine and they might not have small change at times. 'As a passenger it's only right if you carry small notes. As passengers we have to do our part. How many big notes can a driver handle?,' he added.

Proton sets up international arm to accelerate overseas sales

PETALING JAYA: Proton Holdings Bhd has established Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd (PICSB), a wholly owned subsidiary formed to spearhead its overseas expansion efforts, with the objective to provide more flexibility when dealing with international markets. The CEO of the new company is Edmund Lim Meng Thong, who was formerly the director of Proton's International Sales Division. With export sales identified as a key driver of future sales growth, PICSB is tasked with enlarging Proton's global footprint, aiming to expand to the Global South while also continuing to oversee and develop sales and marketing efforts in existing overseas markets. Proton models lead vehicle export volumes in Malaysia and the company's planning calls for a tenfold increase in export volumes over the next five years. The attendees for the first board meeting of the international arm on July 14 included Proton CEO Dr Li Chunrong, Proton Covering deputy CEO Ainol Azmil and chief financial officer Chen Limin. After starting exports to Bangladesh in 1986, just a year after its first car was produced, Proton quickly expanded its international reach, notably becoming the fastest-growing new car franchise in the UK by 1992, with annual sales reaching 15,000 units. By the early 2000s, Proton models were present in 64 countries globally, with the company then strategically shifting its focus to high-growth regional markets such as Asean, China, India, the Middle East and North Africa. In 2025, Proton remains committed to expanding its global presence by introducing new models and technologies to international markets. As of this year, the company has exported 20,169 vehicles to 19 countries since 2020 making it the leading exporter of vehicles from Malaysia. Proton's top three exported models since 2020 are the Proton Saga with 10,998 units, the Proton X50 with 3,986 units and the Proton X70 with 3,316 units. However, the Proton 7 has quickly gained favour, rising to third place in export sales this year. Since its export began to Nepal and Trinidad and Tobago, a total of 233 units have been delivered. Since its launch in December 2024, the model has maintained strong sales with 916 units sold in May for domestic and international markets, bringing its total year-to-date sales to 3,632 units. Beyond individual sales numbers, the international sales team has been busy since the beginning of 2025. February saw the launch of the locally assembled Proton Saga in Egypt with local distributor Ezz Elarab Group while the Proton 7 made its international debut in Nepal the following month followed by its introduction in Trinidad & Tobago in June. Singapore will be next on the list following a special sneak preview of the new C segment SUV at The Car Expo 2025 in May, which will mark the re-entry of Proton into the island nation after an absence of over a decade. Proton International Corp aims for 6,000-unit sales in 2025 and targets to double the figure in 2026. Operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Proton, the international arm aims an export sale of 6,000 units this year, with a target to double that figure next year and exceed 10 times that volume by 2030. Currently, Proton exports to 19 countries, namely Brunei, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore, Bermuda, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Iraq, Ghana, Angora, Kenya, South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe. Lim said, 'The official registration of Proton International Corporation Sdn Bhd marks a pivotal moment, sharpening our focus and increasing our agility to drive global expansion. We are setting ambitious targets for the next few years and to achieve this, we are actively hiring more talent for our regional sales and marketing teams. We are also excited about the progress made at the Automotive High Tech Valley, which will boost our production capability to meet growing international demand.'
