Oklahoma Sooners a sleeper national title contender
The Oklahoma Sooners are one of the more popular teams in the nation to see an improvement from their 6-7 record in 2024. Though the opponents are the same, and Oklahoma has one of the five toughest schedules in college football, experts are high on what Brent Venables has done this offseason.
Though there's optimism the Sooners will rebound from their disappointing season in 2024, the Sooners still have a lot to prove. USA TODAY Sports Blake Toppemeyer believes Oklahoma could be one of the sleeper teams to contend for the national title. The odds are long at +6600, according to BetMGM, but the changes they've made could reap huge rewards.

Oklahoma's roster looks substantially better on the heels of a losing season that sparked Brent Venables to bring in quarterback John Mateer from Washington State. Mateer's offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle, followed the quarterback to Norman to run Oklahoma's offense. Win-win. Another win: Landing standout running back Jadyn Ott, a California transfer. Oklahoma returned a lot of production, and it surely can't be as injury plagued as last season. That leaves the manhole, though, of arguably the nation's most daunting schedule, which could swallow even an improved Sooners team. - Toppemeyer, USA TODAY Sports
For years, Oklahoma had some of the best offenses in college football but were held back by their defense. Last year, it was the other way around. If Oklahoma wants to contend in the SEC and secure a College Football Playoff berth, everything has to come together this year. The defense must be as good or better than it was last year, and the offense must return to what is expected at Oklahoma. And as important as all of that, the Sooners need some good fortune on the injury front.
Brent Venables, Ben Arbuckle, and Jim Nagy made significant additions on both sides of the ball to give the Sooners a boost. But it's the offensive improvement that drives the optimism with Oklahoma. If John Mateer, an improved offensive line, and Jaydn Ott can find a rhythm early in the season, the Sooners will be tough to beat and a surprise contender in 2025.

It is one of the most storied programs in college football, and there aren't a lot of others that have experienced the success that the Fighting Irish have seen. The big difference between Notre Dame and the other elite programs in college football is that the Fighting Irish aren't in a conference. They are an independent, but as the landscape of the sport continues to change, so could Notre Dame's conference stance. Advertisement Right now, the Notre Dame football team wants to stay independent. If it wanted to join a conference, it would. If the Fighting Irish join a conference, they would also lose one of their most unique characteristics. 'It's what this football program was built from,' Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said during an episode of The Joel Klatt Show. 'As long as we can, we will [retain independence]. I have a lot of confidence in our administration and Pete Bevacqua, or AD, that he'll always keep us in a position to be successful. So, as long as we can keep that Independence, we will.' Seeing how the last few years have gone, Marcus Freeman knows that Notre Dame has to be ready to adapt at any second. If you aren't willing to change in this era, you will get left behind. 'But, if there ever comes a time that we are at a disadvantage because we aren't in a conference, I'm sure he'll make the decision,' Freeman added. 'Along with our president, to say, 'Alright, we're gonna join one of these conferences, and position ourselves to not be negatively impacted by being Independent.'' Advertisement With the way that the College Football Playoff is trending, not being in a conference could end up hurting the Fighting Irish. Conference champions get special treatment like automatic bids, and teams in the SEC and the Big Ten seem to get looked at in a different light compared to teams in other conferences. 'I think if you talk about being at a disadvantage to make the postseason,' Freeman continued. 'Because you're not in the Playoff. Or, if there comes a time when teams won't schedule you because the Big Ten or the SEC are saying we're gonna play nine games and we'll play a crossover game and who cares about Notre Dame? Well, then I think there's going to be a point where we're forced to join a conference. But until that point happens, which it doesn't look likely, we're going to stay Independent as long as we can.' Freeman has paid attention to what has gone down, and he has a good idea of where the sport is headed. He knows that Notre Dame might have to make this big change eventually. 'I can see it trending that way,' he said. 'I don't know when that time will come. When you start adding in TV money, you start adding in scheduling, there's a lot of money involved with college football. There might come a time where there might be an outside entity that takes college football away from the NCAA. I don't know, right? The future is uncertain,' Freeman said. 'But I could see a college football system where everybody's Independent and somebody else is — very similar to the NFL — somebody else is scheduling the games, when you play each other. Then, all of a sudden, it's not based off TV deals with your conference anymore. It'll be based off regional location and things like that.' Advertisement If the Notre Dame football team does join a conference, the Big Ten would make a lot of sense. The Fighting Irish are located in the heart of Big Ten country, and Notre Dame has two rivals already in the conference in USC and Michigan. It's a move that would make sense. Head coach Mike Elko and the Texas A&M Aggies continue to surge on the recruiting trail ahead of the 2025 college football season. Advertisement The Aggies signed a top-10 class in Elko's first recruiting cycle and are in the hunt for a similar finish in the class of 2026. The current group, featuring 12 four-star commits, ranks seventh nationally with much of the cycle still remaining. And Wednesday's news marks a significant win for Texas A&M, which fought off some perennial powers to land four-star cornerback Camren Hamiel, the latest highly-touted recruit to pledge to the Aggies. Hamiel plays for Desert Edge High School in Goodyear, Arizona, where he ranks as the top player in the state, the No. 12 cornerback and the No. 86 recruit overall in the 2026 class (ESPN). Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Lysaker-USA TODAY Hamiel (6-foot-1, 180 pounds) racked up 50 tackles (5 for loss) with three pass breakups and three interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown, as a junior last season. Advertisement Elko and Co. were battling with defending national champion Ohio State, Oregon and Alabama for Hamiel. There is certainly now shortage of recruiting prowess among those College Football Playoff contenders, as each signed top-10 classes in 2025. Hamiel's pledge adds to a group that already features four-star cornerback Victor Singleton, also one of the top players at the position. Defensive backs coach Bryant Gross-Armiento and safeties coach Jordan Peterson played key roles in recruiting both to College Station. Hamiel is fresh off an official visit to Texas A&M and previously scheduled an official trip to Oregon on June 12.
