Dukathole plunged into darkness for over a month after substation blows up
For over a month, the residents of Dukathole have been living in complete darkness after the community's substation exploded due to overwhelming pressure caused by illegal connections.
Community members are now faced with increased crime, spoiled food, and a devastating blow to livelihoods.
'We are frustrated. Children are on school holidays, and it's cold. Managing to have hot water and staying warm is a challenge. We prepared for the holidays and bought food in bulk.

'I had to throw away R3000 worth of perishables. I can't refrigerate anything. And we don't have answers and don't know when the power is going to be back,' said Martha Nkosi.
This is not the first time Dukathole has plunged into darkness because of a burnt substation.
In October last year, the same thing happened. At the time, MMC of Energy Mzayifani Ngwenya emphasised that illegal connections are a widespread problem in the community.
While some houses are legally connected to the grid, many rely on illegal connections, with wires crisscrossing between shacks throughout the settlement.
Ward 35 Clr Ntuthuzelo Mpambani said for years, residents have dealt with an inconsistent power supply from an overloaded grid that was never intended to service the growing number of homes in the area.
'The substation was under strain due to overloading caused by illegal connections made by surrounding informal settlements and backyard dwellers desperate for access to power,' said Mpambani.
For the elderly and vulnerable, the consequences have been especially harsh.
Crime has also increased, with criminals taking advantage of the darkness. One resident said you can't even see who's walking up to your gate at night, making it difficult to even report a crime when you can't even identify who committed it.
As the days drag on, candles and paraffin stoves have become the new normal in Dukathole, but residents say they are tired of empty promises. They want accountability, action, and a lasting solution.
An enquiry was sent to the city on a timeline for restoration or even temporary solutions.

32-year-old man found guilty of statutory rape

Mlungisi Mbongeni Thabethe (32) was found guilty in the Middelburg Regional Court on a charge of statutory rape, after he had sex with a 13-year-old girl. The incident took place between June and September 2023. The victim (who cannot be named due to the nature of the charges) testified that she and Thabethe had sex several times. In his plea, Thabethe told the court that he was in a consensual relationship with the victim, and also formally admitted that she was 13 years old at the time of the offence. He further denied they had sex multiple times and said they only had sex once. The victim testified that she met Thabethe in 2023, when he was visiting a friend in the same street as her. She said he asked if they could date, and she told him she was only 13 and was too young. Thabethe allegedly told the girl her age didn't matter to him. The victim's parents pleaded with Thabethe to stay away from their daughter due to her age. When they realised their plea had fallen on deaf ears, they opened a case with the police. Thabethe was then arrested. He testified to the court that he was under the impression the victim was 19 years old, as per her Facebook profile. The victim replied by saying that she only wrote that she was 19 so she could open a Facebook account. Magistrate Deon Minnie stated that when the victim testified, she appeared to be a child under the age of 16, and did not give off the impression that she was older, 'This was so obvious that it must have been the same impression the accused had of the child's age as well,' he said. He further added that any reasonable person, under these circumstances, would have at least taken the steps to confirm the victim's real age despite her appearance, in light of knowing that having sexual relations with a person under 16 is an offence. • Thabethe was then found guilty on the charge of statutory rape. It was further stated that he was negligent for failing to enquire about exactly how old the girl was. • The matter was postponed to August for sentencing. 13 arrested in Blyvooruitzicht as police clamp down on illegal mining

13 arrested in Blyvooruitzicht as police clamp down on illegal mining The SAPS's Vala Umgodi task team in Gauteng made a major breakthrough in the fight against illegal mining this week when they swooped down on suspects in Blyvooruitzicht near Carletonville. The successful operation was carried out on Monday, July 14, as part of the ongoing Operation Vala Umgodi initiative targeting illicit mining syndicates and related crimes. During the operation, 13 suspects aged between 18 and 36 were arrested for a range of serious offences. These included possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, illegal explosives, and being in possession of a stolen vehicle that had been hijacked in Lenasia South. Police confiscated the grey Toyota Etios, which was positively linked to a carjacking case. In addition to the firearms and vehicle, police seized various explosives commonly used in illegal mining, including detonating cords, Superpower blasting cartridges, and a connector capped fuse. Several of the arrested suspects were also found to be in violation of the Immigration Act, further compounding the charges against them. All 13 suspects are expected to appear in the Oberholzer Magistrate's Court in the coming days. At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!

WATCH: Church takes uMfolozi community plight into their own hands

WATCH: Church takes uMfolozi community plight into their own hands Ivangeli Lokudumisa Church congregants under uMfolozi Municipality in northern KZN took service delivery shortcomings into their own hands recently. The church members built a temporary pedestrian bridge to help safeguard children and community members ahead of the imminent reopening of schools. Although a rudimentary, temporary measure, the bridge will put an end to schoolchildren having to remove their shoes and other items of clothing as they do when crossing the submerged Mhlahlaneni bridge on the P152 between KwaMbonambi and Sokhulu.
