Bengal resident pushed into Bangladesh brought back with four others

Indian Express16-06-2025
Following the intervention by the TMC government in West Bengal, 36-year-old Mehbub Sheikh, a resident of Murshidabad who was picked up by Maharashtra Police and pushed into Bangladesh on suspicion of being an illegal immigrant, was brought back to the country on Monday.
Another youth from Murshidabad, Shamim Khan, who too was detained in Maharashtra and pushed into Bangladesh, was also brought back along with Mehbub, officials here in Kolkata said.
West Bengal Migrant Welfare Board chief Samirul Islam told The Indian Express that the intervention was made at the top-level of the state government.
'Under instructions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the West Bengal government and police communicated to the Central government and the BSF. Mehbub Sheikh and Shamim Khan were brought back today (Monday). Three others were brought back on Sunday. We are verifying whether there are other residents of West Bengal who have been similarly pushed into Bangladesh,' Islam said.
Sheikh, who worked as a mason in Thane area near Mumbai, was picked by Maharashtra Police on June 11 on suspicion of being an illegal Bangladesh migrant, and by June 14 (Saturday, 3.30 am) he was sent to a BSF camp in Siliguri and pushed into the neighbouring country despite his family and local police sending necessary documents to prove that he was an Indian citizenship.
'We coordinated with BSF and now the youths are returning home,' said Superintendent of Police (Murshidabad) Kumar Sunny Raj. In a statement, Murshidabad Police said: 'Upon receiving information, Murshidabad police immediately conducted local enquiries to establish the Indian citizenship of the individuals. After verifying relevant documents, they were submitted to the Border Security Force. Murshidabad police conducted prolonged coordination with the BSF. Later, the BSF conducted an urgent flag meeting with the Bangladesh Border Guard and brought back the youths.'
'Mehbub and Shamim have been handed over to Raiganj police station b y the BSF. We are now handing them over to Murshidabad police,' said Md Sana Akhtar, SP (Uttar Dinajpur).
Of the five men brought back since Sunday, four are from Murshidabad and one from Purba Bardhaman, police said. They have been identified as Mehbub Sheikh of Bhagwangola; Nazimuddin Mondal and Shamim Khan of Hariharpara; Minarul Sheikh of Beldanga – all Murshidabad; and Mostafa Kamal Sheikh of Monteswar in Purba Bardhaman district.
Mehbub Sheikh's brother, Mujibur, said: 'We are happy that he (Mehbub) is coming home. Today, a group of policemen came and took all the documents, including land records, voter card, ration card, Aadhaar card and others.'
Meanwhile, the three others — Nazimuddin Mondal, Minarul Sheikh and Mostafa Kamal Sheikh — were also picked up by the police in Maharashtra and later pushed into Bangladesh. They were handed over to Mekhliganj police station in Cooch Behar and are expected to reach their homes on Monday night.
'My brother worked in the wig-making business. He worked in Delhi and moved to Mumbai a month ago. He was staying in the Nalasopara area. He was picked up on June 9 along with two other men, who worked as masons. The next day we sent all the documents to the police. We also submitted documents to the local Beldanga police station, who contacted Mumbai police but were not entertained. We got to know that the three were pushed into Bangladesh when my brother called us from Bangladesh,' said Musarraf, brother of Minarul. 'My brother is on his way home. My thanks to our state government for their effort,' added Musarraf.

Growth to get lift, boost for demand after GST rationalisation, say economists

Synopsis Economists predict that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) rationalization will significantly boost domestic demand, providing crucial support to the Indian economy amidst challenges posed by US tariffs. The simplified tax structure, particularly benefiting essentials, is expected to increase disposable income for lower and middle-income consumers. ANI GST reform push has drawn favourable comments from economists. Domestic demand will get a boost after goods and services tax (GST) rationalisation, economists said, providing support to the economy that's seen likely taking a hit from the 50% duty levied on Indian imports by the US.'At a time where consumption demand has been uneven and felt pressure from high inflation and low nominal wage growth over the last couple of quarters, the proposed GST reforms are a positive, especially for essentials, aiding consumption by the lower and middle income class,' said Sakshi Gupta, principal economist at HDFC Bank. QuantEco Research economist Yuvika Singhal said, 'Any kind of reduction in taxes is positive for consumption as it leaves higher disposable income in the hands of consumers.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in his Independence Day speech on Friday that GST reforms would provide relief to micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), local vendors and GST cuts on items will range from durables such as refrigerators and air conditioners to packaged foods and medical supplies. 'It's a much-needed development, and GST rationalisation is the need of the hour, apart from other reforms,' said Paras Jasrai, associate director at India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra). The Centre has proposed that India move to a simpler, two-slab structure from four currently--retaining the 5% and 18% rates and scrapping the 12% and 28% levies, ET reported earlier. 'With indirect taxes having a wider reach, GST reforms can deliver a stronger boost,' said Gaura Sengupta, chief economist at IDFC First Bank. 'Rural consumption is improving but not broad-based enough to offset weak urban demand, so a fiscal push was needed—and these reforms provide that.'Jasrai said that lower stabs and tax rates will give consumption demand a significant boost, especially amid the uncertainty over trade tariffs that are seen impacting external President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% penalty for importing Russian oil. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank have cut global growth forecasts amid the prevailing trade uncertainty. Even so, India's domestic strength will stand out.'Since domestic consumption makes up a larger share of the economy, India will remain resilient despite global headwinds,' said Singhal. An increase in spending activity will also lift gross domestic product (GDP). The boost to nominal GDP growth is estimated at 0.6 percentage point over 12 months using fiscal multipliers, said Bank's Gupta said the reform could boost demand for consumer durables if GST rates on items such as ACs and TVs are reduced. 'A more notable impact could also be seen for demand for two-wheelers and cars if the current GST rate of 28% is reduced to 18%,' she highlighted that fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies will see a positive impact, depending on how and when the changes are implemented.

NRI family attacked, constable line-attached after protest

Bhopal: A London-based NRI family was allegedly targeted and attacked in Bhind district, triggering anger among members of the Sikh community and forcing police to act against a local constable accused of instigating the assault. Vikramjit Singh, originally from Ashoknagar and now settled in the UK, had arrived at his in-laws' house in Fatehpur village near Gohad after two and a half years, along with his wife Rajveer Kaur, son Rohanpreet Singh and daughter Ravneet Kaur. On Thursday evening, while the family was buying fruits on Station Road in Gohad, they got into an altercation with constable Kuldeep Kushwaha, who was in plain clothes. According to the family, the constable used abusive language, made a video of their car, and grew angry when asked for his identity. "When I refused to let him make a video of my car and family, he called others and asked them to come with weapons," Singh told police officers. The family left in their car but was allegedly intercepted near a dhaba between Station Road and Fatehpur village. A group of men armed with sticks attacked the vehicle, shattering its side glass and windows. Rohanpreet suffered facial injuries while Ravneet's hand was hurt in the assault. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The incident was captured on video, which surfaced on Friday. Singh later complained to the Gohad police, but said he was pressured to hush up the case. When he went to the station, the SHO allegedly said he could have run over his constable. Singh then said his car was fitted with cameras and everything was recorded. The family has also complained to the Indian Embassy in London. After protests by the Sikh community, who accused Kushwaha of plotting the attack, Bhind SP Asit Yadav removed the constable from duty and line-attached him. "Attackers are being identified and action will be taken," said officials. Local MLA Keshav Desai also reached the spot and supported the Sikh community, pointing out that there were earlier complaints against the constable. Dozens of community members gathered at the police station demanding registration of an FIR against the constable. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
