Coastal Carolina coach torches umps after College World Series ejection
Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall slammed umpires at the Men's College World Series on Sunday following the Chanticleers' loss to the LSU Tigers. Schnall was ejected in the first inning after an argument with home plate umpire Angel Campos. He said his ejection wasn't justified and he was wrongly accused of bumping an umpire who appeared to trip and fall to the ground when he came over to break up the commotion. "If you guys watch the video, there was a guy who came in extremely aggressively, tripped over Campos' foot, embarrassed in front of 25,000, and goes, 'Two-game suspension' and says, 'Bumping the umpire,'" Schnall said. "There was no bump. I shouldn't be held accountable for a grown man's athleticism. Now it's excessive because I was trying to say I didn't bump him. "It is what it is. If that warranted an ejection, there would be a lot of ejections. As umpires, it's your job to manage the game with some poise and calmness and a little bit of tolerance." The NCAA said Schnall was arguing balls and strikes, which was heard on the broadcast. The NCAA added that the head coach was given a warning. Since LSU won Game 2 and the College World Series, Schnall's suspension would start in the 2026 season. The NCAA said Schnall and first-base coach Matt Schilling engaged in "prolonged arguing," which triggers a two-game suspension. Schilling is likely to be suspended for three games — one for the ejection and two for "prolonged arguing." Schnall said he couldn't hear Campos' initial warning when he was arguing balls and strikes. He added that he wasn't "sorry" for what transpired. "As a head coach, it's your right to get an explanation for why we got warned," Schnall said. "I'm 48 years old, and I shouldn't get shooed by another grown man. When I came out, I got told it was a warning issued for arguing balls and strikes, and I said it was because you missed three. At that point, ejected. If that warrants an ejection, I'm the first one to stand here like a man and apologize." Coastal Carolina athletic director Chance Miller said Sunday night the ejections "altered the trajectory of a must-win game for our team." "These decisions were made with an alarming level of haste, without an attempt at de-escalation, and deprived our student-athletes of the leadership they have relied on throughout a historic postseason run," Miller said. "This is not about a single call — it's about process and professionalism. In the biggest moment of the college baseball season, our program and its student-athletes deserved better." Miller implored the NCAA to re-evaluate its training methods and how it assigns and reviews umpires in championship settings. Ravens' prized free agent signing Jaire Alexander picks jersey number
Jaire Alexander won't officially become a Raven until he gets his first win over the Steelers, but Baltimore's new prized signing has picked a jersey number. Sticking to the formula developed with the Packers, Alexander will wear No. 23 with the Ravens. The Ravens signed Alexander to a one-year deal worth up to $6 million last week. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that the two-time Pro-Bowler chose Baltimore over the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins. San Diego Wave transfer María Sánchez to Tigres UANL
San Diego Wave FC has transferred forward María Sánchez to Liga MX Femenil's Tigres UANL, confirming recent speculation that the Mexico international player would be returning to her former club. Both teams announced the 29-year-old's move on Monday, saying Sánchez was transferred for an undisclosed fee. The news was first reported by ESPN. Advertisement 'When the opportunity came to return to Tigres I had to do a lot of inner searching, and I ultimately decided that returning to Liga MX Femenil and Tigres specifically was the best course of action for my career,' Sánchez said in a statement. In that same statement, Wave sporting director and general manager Camille Ashton said Sánchez 'expressed her interest to rejoin the program' and the Wave 'respect and support her decision and wish her all the best moving forward.' The American-born attacker arrived in San Diego last year, after requesting a trade at the end of a two-year stint with the Houston Dash. Houston had previously signed Sánchez on a $1.5 million deal, then considered the richest contract in the NWSL. Sánchez arrived at the Wave as a marquee player, signing with the club through 2026 with an option for 2027. This season, however, the winger has fallen into more of a rotational role under coach Jonas Eidevall. She started in her final match for the Wave against the Washington Spirit, which ended in a scoreless draw on Sunday. Across her 40 appearances with the Wave, Sánchez tallied nine goals and seven assists. With the Dash, Sánchez totaled eight goals and 14 assists across 62 matches in her two seasons there. In Mexico, Sánchez previously enjoyed brief spells with Guadalajara and Tigres over a two-year stretch. She made her Liga MX debut with Guadalajara in 2020, before moving to Tigres the following year and leading the club to the league final. Sánchez has also featured in over 70 games for the Mexican women's national team since her international debut in 2015. That year, she joined the team at the World Cup, debuting in the competition as the second-youngest player on Mexico's roster.
