German leader Merz says his government has a 'stable foundation' despite a dispute

Washington Post3 days ago
BERLIN — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Friday that his coalition has a 'stable foundation' and has achieved a lot in its first 10 weeks, but acknowledged that 'occasional setbacks' are a risk in government as his administration struggles with its first major dispute.
Merz took office on May 6, leading a coalition of his conservative Union bloc with the center-left Social Democrats that has a relatively thin parliamentary majority. He vowed to strengthen Europe's biggest economy after years of stagnation, enable Germany to build Europe's strongest conventional army and keep the U.S. on board with aid to Ukraine.
The government has launched a program to encourage investment , set in motion plans to raise defense spending and implemented a tougher approach to migration . Merz has taken a prominent role in diplomacy on Ukraine and other issues.
Merz said at the German leader's annual summer news conference that he is 'very satisfied with what we have achieved in the first 10 weeks.'
Merz set out to avoid the infighting that plagued ex-Chancellor Olaf Scholz's three-party coalition, which collapsed in November . However, the new government's record has been overshadowed over the past week by parliament's failure to elect three new justices for Germany's highest court .
Nominations have in the past mostly been approved uneventfully. But planned votes last Friday were scrapped at the last minute after some lawmakers in Merz's bloc balked at a candidate put forward by the Social Democrats.
Opponents of the nominee, law professor Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf, have cited her perceived liberal views on issues such as abortion. Leading Social Democrats have been irked by the conservatives' failure to follow through on an agreement on the new justices and have stood by their candidate.
Merz has downplayed the argument and insisted Friday that 'there is no time pressure' to rush to a solution. And he rejected a suggestion that his coalition is on wobbly ground, with the court nominee flap following its bumpy start when lawmakers needed an unprecedented two rounds of voting to elect Merz as chancellor in May.
'This government stands on a stable foundation, on a stable majority in the German parliament,' Merz said. 'But you see from these two votes that we are living in very uncertain times, also regarding supposed certainties in the German parliament.'
He said that 'we know what job we have, and high points and successes are part of that as well as occasional setbacks.'
Recent polls have suggested that Merz's coalition has work to do to convince voters. Ratings for the Union and Social Democrats haven't picked up from their lackluster showing in Germany's February election . Surveys show the far-right, anti-immigration Alternative for Germany solidifying its strong second place.

Life sciences VC Omega Funds closes $647m funding round

Life sciences venture capital (VC) company Omega Funds has closed its eighth fund, with capital commitments totalling $647m. As with its previous funds, the US-based business said its oversubscribed funding, which had initially targeted a $600m close, will continue executing on its strategy to support management teams in the US and Europe that target severe, unmet medical needs through company creation, early venture rounds, and later-stage financing. Omega Funds managing director Francesco Draetta said: 'We believe our broad investment strategy is well-positioned for navigating this period of macro and policy uncertainty. 'We look forward to contributing our capital, expertise, and network connectivity in partnering with entrepreneurs, founders, co-investors, and the broader community to transform the standards of care for severe diseases.' According to Omega, it has raised $2.5bn since its first fund in 2004 to support the development of medical devices and therapeutics across indications including oncology, immunology, and rare diseases. In total, 52 products have been brought to market by Omega's former portfolio companies, with the VC's previous investments resulting in 50 exits via M&A, and 47 public listings. M&A exits include SoniVie, Scorpion Therapeutics, and Amunix Pharmaceuticals, which were acquired by Boston Scientific, Eli Lilly, and Sanofi, respectively. Companies that Omega has invested in have gone on to launch initial public offerings (IPO). These include Kestra Medical Technologies, Beta Bionics, and Imago Biosciences, all of which are listed on the Nasdaq exchange. Omega Funds' founder and managing director Otello Stampacchia commented: 'By exceeding its target size, fund VIII is a recognition of our investment strategy and track record of consistent exits across market cycles.' Life science companies are typically reliant on investment from VC or private equity (PE) businesses. While research by Bain & Company found that deal value in 2023 struggled to match the pace of previous years, more recent research by the consultant found that healthcare PE soared to an estimated $115bn in 2024, making it the second-highest deal value total on record. Other significant entities backing life science companies include Symbiotic Capital. The credit company from biotech entrepreneur Arie Belldegrun, founder of Kite Pharma and co-founder of Bellco Capital, launched in August 2024 with $600m for life science-specific loans. Wärtsilä to divest Marine Electrical Systems business to VINCI Energies

Wärtsilä has announced the divestment of its Marine Electrical Systems business to VINCI Energies, a multi-technical solutions and services provider. The Marine Electrical Systems division, known for its specialised electrical systems integration for vessels, operates as part of Wärtsilä Portfolio Business. The division has been managed independently to enhance performance and realise value through strategic divestment. In 2024, the annual revenue of the division was €100m ($116.22m). The transaction encompasses the sale of Wärtsilä SAM Electronics and associated assets for a project under construction in Brazil. Wärtsilä head of portfolio business Bernd Bertram: 'This agreement is yet another proof point of our Portfolio Business divestment strategy coming to life. VINCI Energies has deep expertise in complex project-based business and therefore is an ideal match for Marine Electrical Systems. 'I'm confident that VINCI Energies will provide a solid platform for further business success for the benefit of the customers, partners, and the highly skilled professionals of Marine Electrical Systems.' Through this acquisition, VINCI Energies aims to bolster its industrial services range through its brand Actemium and reinforce its presence in the German defence market with the transfer of 350 employees. The transaction is expected to add an annual revenue of €100m to VINCI Energies' portfolio. It is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approvals. In related news, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions has secured a contract to provide cargo handling and fuel supply systems for four Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) being constructed for Cosco Shipping. These vessels are currently under production at Cosco Shipping (Qidong) Offshore, with the initial order for two vessels placed in the fourth quarter of 2024 and an additional order for two more vessels in the second quarter of 2025.
