The films followed the lives of a group of average British people every seven years since 1964 and so the director became incredibly close to the contributors.

There were therefore question marks over whether the ITV series would continue without him.
But producers began work on the next run this week to continue his life's work and honour his legacy, with the instalment likely to air in 2026.
Before he died, Michael had shared hopes he'd be able to make 84 Up - when he would have been 99.
But he later acknowledged that might not be possible due to his health.

SCREEN LEGEND DIES James Bond and Coronation Street director Michael Apted dies, aged 79
In one of his final interviews, he suggested it could possibly continue with someone else at the helm, such as his longtime producer, Claire Lewis.
The Up series of documentary films followed the lives of ten boys and four girls in England, beginning in 1964, when they were seven years old and was directed by Paul Almond.
The first film was titled Seven Up!, with later films adjusting the number in the title to match the age of the subjects at the time of filming.
Michael took up the reins for 1970's Seven plus Seven.
The children were selected to represent the range of socio-economic backgrounds in Britain at that time, on the assumption that each child's social class would determine their future.
It's painted a fascinating picture since, with some participants criticising the series, and Apted, when they chose to quit the process.

The documentary has had nine episodes—one every seven years.
ITV has aired every series except 42 Up in 1998, which aired on BBC One.
In 1991, 28 Up was chosen for Roger Ebert's ten greatest films of all time.
But it has also attracted criticism for some editorial choices, for example just four of the 20 participants are female.

James Norton suffers horror injury on set of new BBC series
James Norton has revealed the 'painful' injury he suffered which threatened to halt filming for King and Conqueror. The new BBC drama, which is set to launch on August 24, tells the tale of King Harold (Norton) and William the Conqueror's (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) fight for England in 1066. The 40-year-old star, who has been linked to the role of James Bond this year, was in rehearsals just days before a scheduled break when he broke his collarbone after falling off a horse. 'In some of the battle scenes in the latter half of the shoot, I'm yelping very loudly and the yelps are pretty authentic,' he told The Times. 'I fell off a horse and I landed on my shoulder. Actually it was a remarkably quick recovery and it didn't affect shooting. Luckily we dealt with it. The collarbone recovers very quickly. It was just quite painful.' It means some of the Battle of Hastings scenes include some very realistic sound effects as James was shouting out in agony. However, the scariest part of the whole ordeal was knowing he'd have to let Kitty Kaletsky, the drama's executive producer, about his accident. He recalled: 'I was doing all my own stunts but I had an amazing stunt double who I was in the hospital with. There was like a moment where we said, 'We're f***ed. Are you going to call Kitty, or am I?' ' The cast really went for it on set during filming last year, and one poor extra needed his nose bandaged up after James went a bit too far during on shoot in Iceland. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video At one point, director Baltasar Kormakur told the actor to attack the soldier being played by an extra in the face, and he took things to a whole other level. He said: 'I literally bit his nose. The poor guy. I went through his skin. It was terrible. The following day the guy came into rehearsals with a huge bandage.' The Happy Valley actor insisted he was 'just getting really into it', but the aftermath was 'like some kind of comedy'. The nose biting was actually the director's idea, which James described as a 'stroke of genius' befitting of a battlefield in England in the 11th century. More Trending After the bloody incident, there were some serious talks about whether the scene would make the final cut – and fans will be able to see it in all its glory in the opening episode. 'I'm so happy for the extra that we kept it in there,' director Baltasar admitted. View More » King and Conqueror launches on BBC One on Sunday, August 24. Got a story? Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz partnership 'in doubt' ahead of US Open
Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz could be forced to pulled out of the star-studded US Open mixed doubles tournament, according to reports. The revamped event at Flushing Meadows is set to get underway on Tuesday with the two tennis superstars one of the teams in the draw. But The Sun reports that Raducanu and Alcaraz's partnership is in 'doubt' ahead of the two-day knockout competition due to a 'logistical headache'. Spanish world No.2 Alcaraz has reached the singles final at the Cincinnati Open and is now 'likely' to have to travel on the same day he andRaducanu play their first match against Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper. It takes two hours to fly between Cincinnati in Ohio – where Alcaraz is currently in action – and New York, where the US Open is taking place. There is still hope that Raducanu and Alcaraz will feature in the US Open mixed doubles, though, which has a massive prize pot of $1m (£739k). Raducanu's team are 'hopeful' Alcaraz will still play after making contact with his camp following the five-time major winner's run to the Cincinnati final. talkSPORT, meanwhile, reports that Alcaraz 'seemingly still plans to play' with British star Raducanu in the US Open mixed doubles. There has long been rumours of a love interest between Raducanu and Alcaraz off the court – but that has never been confirmed by either player. Raducanu and Alcaraz were announced as a doubles pairing for the US Open – the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year – in June. 'She's going to be the boss,' Alcaraz said about the partnership. 'I'm super excited about it. I think it's going to be great. 'It was an amazing idea for the tournament. I know Emma since a really long time ago. 'I have a really good relationship with her. It's going to be interesting. We are both going to enjoy, for sure. I will try to put my doubles skill on it. 'We will try to win. But obviously it's going to be really, really fun.' More Trending Raducanu laughed off rumours of a blossoming romantic relationship with Alcaraz earlier this summer, insisting the two stars are 'just friends'. If Raducanu and Alcaraz do feature in the US Open mixed doubles and battle their way past Pegula and Draper in their opener, the pair could then take on Novak Djokovic and his Serbian compatriot Olga Danilovic. There are only 16 teams taking part – meaning that whoever wins in the first round will progress directly to the quarter-finals. Wimbledon champion and world No.1 Jannik Sinner is also playing in the US Open mixed doubles having teamed up with Katerina Siniakova. Good Morning Britain in chaos as studio flooded with smoke and panicked host screams 'fire!' - driving ITV viewers to 'switch off'
Good Morning Britain was left in chaos as the studio flooded with smoke and a panicked host screamed 'fire!' during Monday's instalment of the ITV show - while viewers confessed they were going to 'switch off'. The latest episode of the programme was hosted by Adil Ray, 51, and Kate Garraway, 58. One of the many guests that appeared on the show was former Towie star Joey Essex, 35, who was there to talk about his upcoming boxing match. Joey walked into the studio, lots of smoke followed behind him and he soon took a seat next to the presenters. As the Love Island favourite got chatting to Kate, Adil moved his arms from side to side to try and move the smoke away. He asked him: 'Can you still see us?! Joey we're here!' One of the many guests that appeared on the show was former Towie star Joey Essex, 35, (pictured) who was there to talk about his upcoming boxing match. Joey then started to waft his arms as well, and replied: 'Just about!' 'Fire, fire!' Adil joked. Kate told Joey: 'You're smoking!' Monday's episode got off to a bad start with a technical blunder, and fans confessed that they also wanted to switch off after realising who was hosting - as they think that the pair don't have good chemistry. One said on X, formerly known as Twitter: 'Worst pairing ever. You can do better than this.' 'Nobody will get a word in with these two 'presenters'. Switches over #GMB.' 'Sorry but I will not be watching.' However there were others who insisted they loved the pair and shared more favourable comments. Many viewers rushed online to share their views on Kate and Adil presenting the ITV show on Monday 'Yes! Love Adil! But to be honest all the @GMB presenters are really good.' 'I like this pairing on GMB . At heart both exceptional interviewers.' 'What a great pair.' Kate has been a presenter on GMB since 2014. She hosts every Thursday and alternative Fridays. Meanwhile Adil joined in 2024 and presents on Fridays. Susanna Reid hosts the show Monday to Wednesday, with alternative Thursdays, while Richard Madeley and Ed Balls are on our screens Monday to Thursday. Robert Rinder also presents on Fridays. Meanwhile Charlotte Hawkins and Ranvir Singh are holiday cover. It comes after a Good Morning Britain guest has revealed her terrifying ordeal after getting 'botched' surgery in Turkey - saying the procedure left her in such pain, she begged doctors to kill her when she woke up. Sarah Platt went abroad to get loose skin removed but the operation went terribly wrong, and she walked away with a life-threatening infection and 'excruciating pain.' She joined hosts Robert Rinder and Charlotte Hawkins in the ITV studio on Friday to discuss the deadly procedure that convinced medics she may not have long to live. Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 from 6am and is available to stream on ITVX.
