NY Kimchi

Time Out01-07-2025
When Sam Yoo of Golden Diner took over his parents' lease across from Rockefeller Center, he decided his next act would pay homage to them and their heritage. Inside the 6,500-square-foot space sits two concepts of his own making: Korean pub Golden Hof and Korean raw bar and steakhouse NY Kimchi.
Compared to the lively drinking den up above, NY Kimchi acts as a calming sanctuary. Upon descending the stairs, the eye is immediately drawn to the massive rock wall that lines the back wall, with tufts of green and yellow moss sprouting from the edges and cracks. Successfully evoking the idea of a rock garden, the sound structure is softened with rows of bamboo and round paper lanterns that hang from the ceiling. And yet, among such Zen-like interiors, each table houses a fire.
With barbecues built right into wooden tables, incredibly friendly staff come around to converse, take your order and expertly cook your food right in front of you. Yes, of course, you can go for the 30-day, dry-aged porterhouse for $140, but Yoo has made it a point to keep affordability in mind, serving soy-marinated short rib priced at $44, while ssamjang-slicked lamb chops come in at $46. Served alongside are all manner of banchan—cubes of pickled radish, marinated cucumbers, and a round of potato salad, to name a few. You could easily eat like a purist, but the steaks do come with perilla-soy and kimchi-heavy dipping sauces, so we do recommend a quick dip. But before you go all in on steak, know that Yoo has taken just as much care to the steaks as he has the starters, serving a cooling black bass "Naengmyum" crudo so chilled that lemon zest-laden ice chips are a feature; and a jiggly Parmesan egg souffle that balances that right amount of cheese and airiness, making it ever so easy to spoon it from dish to mouth until done.

Meghan Markle fans convinced she 'doesn't age' as they learn how old she is now

Meghan Markle is celebrating her birthday and fans can't get over how old she actually is. Many have taken to social media to say the former Suits star 'doesn't age' Meghan Markle marks her 44th birthday today (August 4). The past 12 months have marked many major changes for Meghan, especially since the dawn of 2025, with the launch of her new Instagram account, lifestyle brand, as well as her Netflix cookery show. ‌ But despite her busy year, and long-running rift with the Royal Family, she still looks incredibly fresh-faced despite turning another year older. People have flocked to social media to share their well-wishes and many also remarked on how youthful her appearance is. ‌ One fan said she just "couldn't believe" how old she was due to her "baby face" and natural beauty. One gushed: "Meghan looks younger than me, and I'm 25." ‌ A woman said that looking younger than you are is in "the genes". They added: "My daughter is almost 62, just gone through bowel cancer, never had Botox or anything in her life, doesn't wear heavy makeup, and people think she's around 35-40! I'm 87, and people think I'm around 76! It's in the genes". A third gushed: "It's official – Meghan Markle doesn't age." And a fourth asked: "How can Meghan be turning 44? She looks so young and fresh." ‌ Others urged her to make a "skincare line" because "that face card is lethal" – and thankfully, Meghan has done just that. In recent months, Meghan has opened up about her skincare routine. Netflix show – With Love, Meghan – shared a list of her must-have fashion and beauty favourites – and they include a 'glass skin' moisturiser available from Boots. While many of Meghan's favourite products are expensive or only available to buy in the US, one product she recommends is the reasonably priced Collagen Jelly Cream from viral brand Medicube. Previously quite tricky to find here in the UK, the Korean beauty brand has just launched into Boots with a 20% off introductory offer, taking this Collagen Jelly Cream down from £26 to £20.80 for a big 110ml tub (most moisturisers come in 50ml pots). She's also revealed her favourite lip balm to keep her pout looking lovely and juicy, as well as a highlighter that gives her that 'lit-from-within' glow. While products aren't guaranteed ways to turn back the clock, it's definitely interesting to see what's in her beauty bag.

I drank gin from 10am at Latitude — one thing helped prevent a hangover

Back in Roman times it was all about eating fried canaries and raw owls' eggs, or crushed up swallows' beaks and pig offal to stave off a hangover. Meanwhile, the Mongolians were scoffing picked sheep eyes and the Puerto Ricans were rubbing lemons under their armpits. Personally, I've never trusted any thing other than a full English breakfast or hair of the dog. But, when a small, luminous yellow pouch called PrePear landed on my desk, promising preventative salvation from too many gins and slims, I was intrigued. So, I did what any self-respecting drinks columnist would do: I took it to a field in Suffolk and tested it under some of the most rigorous conditions known to mankind… Latitude Festival. For PrePear to take effect, you're meant to take it at least 20 minutes before your first drink. Think of it as a kind of preventative prayer to the party gods. In my case, this meant trying it at 10:10am. Feeder and Fatboy Slim were playing later on, so I knew it was going to be a big day. What exactly was this dinky carton of fruit-based elixir I'd just gulped down? No less than 100% Shingo Korean pear juice (Pyrus pyrifolia), aka 'the king of fruit' (which I thought was the Durian, but whatever). Apparently it's naturally laced with vitamins, minerals, and small amounts of potassium and polyphenol antioxidants. It has a higher water, potassium and fructose content than the European pear, and has been used in East Asian medicine for decades. Flavour-wise, it tastes like something a wellness influencer might have for breakfast (and tell you about, at great length); sweet with a lightly cleansing nuttiness, almost like biting into the russeting on a fresh pear. Pretty delicious, actually. It wasn't just me, either. I made two of my friends down a PrePear sachet each, and I filmed them doing it so I could make a TikTok. Who says I'm no fun at a festival? My thinking was to get a three-way test going, in case the results differed. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A small study, published in the journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology, examined the impact of Korean pear juice on alcohol consumption. It saw a group of 14 men given either pear juice or a placebo to drink, then after waiting 30 minutes, they consumed 540 ml of spirits (alcohol conc. 20.1 v/v%). Blood and urine samples were collected and tested and showed the 'total and average of hangover severity were alleviated to 16% and 21% respectively by Korean pear juice', 15 hours after alcohol had been consumed. Those who had consumed pear juice before boozing were found to have improved concentration and focus the next day, less sensitivity to light, enhanced metabolic processing of alcohol and notably decreased blood alcohol levels. A peer-led review by Australia's national science agency, CSITO, also found reductions in blood alcohol levels. Professor Manny Noakes, the study's lead researcher, told The Sydney Herald: 'It appears that the factors in Korean pears act on the key enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), to speed up alcohol metabolism and elimination or inhibition of alcohol absorption. 'In particular, reductions were seen in blood acetaldehyde levels, the toxic metabolic thought to be responsible for the hangover symptoms, with pear juice consumption.' Plus, the juice contains additional water for hydration to the tune of an 85% content, natural sugars to help maintain blood glucose and fruit polyphenols to bring down inflammation. That little carton had its work cut out with us. The drinks were many and varied that day – from Jack Daniels and diet coke, gin and slimline tonics, bookended by Espresso Martinis in the Tia Maria Tent and shots of Jägermeister. Sure, I'd been partially soaking up the booze with overpriced burgers, toasties, Korean style chicken wings, haloumi fries and by thrashing around to my own interpretive dance moves to Right Here, Right Now, but still. The result? I woke up the next morning, breathed out and braced myself for the cumulative head throb that never came. Nothing was playing the maracas behind my eyes, there was no creeping existential dread, just my usual craving for real coffee and a portion of loaded hash browns. It was a similar story with my two friends. More Trending That's not to say we felt particularly fresh either, no one was running any marathons or completing an Iron Man competition that day. (Or ever.) Look, I'm not saying consuming Korean pear juice before drinking is a miracle, but it really does seem that prevention is better than the cure. It worked for us and if nothing else, it made my Monday morning feel a little less like crawling uphill through broken glass, which is a result in itself. View More » Bring on Wilderness next year… While Rob was impressed by his experience with PrePear, registered dietitian and nutritionist, Jennie Norton doesn't think this will necessarily be the case for everyone. She told Stylist: 'Expect a modest result at best. 'For reliable hangover prevention, stick with pacing drinks, alternating with water, eating balanced meals and capping total units below national low-risk guidelines. 'Korean pear juice is a safe add-on for most adults, but it is not a stand-alone hangover shield.' Do you have a story to share? 'I tried 5 Skims-style shaping bodysuits and this £20 one was surprisingly the best'

With it being peak occasionwear season, Mirror's shopping writer Grace has ranked the best tried-and-tested Skims-like shaping bodysuits around, with one affordable buy coming out on top Kim Kardashian's brand Skims has quickly become a cult favourite for so many thanks to its comfy, high-quality, body-positive, and even sometimes controversial (we're looking at you, Skims face wrap) shapewear and lingerie. However, with price tags of around £74 for a shaping bodysuit and sometimes into the £100s for a limited-edition collab, its shapewear is definitely an investment that not everyone has. And with it being prime occasionwear season, when you may be looking for that extra support, I'm here to help you out with tried-and-tested Skims-like shaping bodysuits to see what ranks best for compression, fit, price, and overall comfort. From Boux Avenue to H&M and even Amazon, I've rounded up my list of five of the best, depending on what qualities you are looking for, with one coming out on top. Best overall Dorina brushed micro bodysuit in brown, £20 Pros: Thong back so no visible panty line, doesn't look like shapewear so can be worn on its own; flattering square neckline; thick, quality material Cons: Thick material adds a slightly bulky layer Out of the five I tried, this brushed jersey one from Dorina was my winner. I was so surprised to feel the thick, high-quality material when I got it out of the packet, considering the affordable £20 price tag. I love that this had a thong back so there's no risk of the dreaded VPL, and the button-fastening in the crotch makes this super easy to remove. I also love the on-trend chocolate brown colour and flattering square neckline, which make this suitable for wearing out on its own. I'm usually not a fan of the trend of wearing shapewear as actual clothing, but you could 100% get away with it with this Dorina one. Not to mention, the most important aspect is that it's super supportive, smooth, and sculpting, so it will make you feel your best. My only criticism is that due to the thick brushed jersey material, if you're wearing something skin-tight, this may add a bulky-feeling layer underneath. Best for shaping and tummy control H&M Firm shape Sculpting Thong body, currently £17 Pros: Sculpts and compresses; flattering on the bust; different skin tones available Compared to the Dorina one, this sculpting thong body from H&M is more of an underwear bodysuit. It is available in five different skin tones and definitely has the most compressive effect on the stomach. If you're trying to sculpt your body for a summer wedding or event, this is one of the best choices. The sculpting material has fantastic tummy control, and if you've got smaller boobs, this helps give them a subtle lift and gorgeous shape. However, if you've got a larger chest, you may struggle getting the support you need as there is no padding or lining around the cups. Again, bonus points are given for the thong back and adjustable shoulder straps. Best chest support Dorina Mix & Match Sublime Sculpt medium control light padded thong bodysuit in black, £28 Pros: Adjustable straps; padded cups with good support for small to medium boobs; removable straps for under strapless/one-shoulder pieces Cons: Sizing only goes up to an E cup If you're looking for more support or padding around the chest area, the Sulbime Sculpt bodysuit from Dorina is your best bet. Similar to SKIMS' popular Core Sculpt Underwire Bodysuit, £149, the moulded cups and sculpted fit is so flattering. Additionally, the removable and adjustable straps make this suitable for underneath strapless and one-shoulder dresses or tops. Unfortunately, this bodysuit only goes up to a cup size D on ASOS and an E on the Dorina website, which can be quite restrictive if you've got a chest any larger. Best for affordability ZENYA Women Shapewear Bodysuit, currently £10.19 Pros: Adjustable straps; compresses the stomach well; affordable Cons: Not seamless so can show through clothing; crotch is long At under £12, this is by far the most affordable option and a great option if you want some extra shaping without breaking the bank. Made from a stretchy, lightweight nylon and spandex blend, this bodysuit is completely breathable, making it a great underlayer for summertime. It also features a tummy control body shaper without uncomfortable wires, so it's great for sculpting and staying comfy. The main issue I found with this one, however, is that it's not seamless and provides a lot of coverage on your bum, which results in a visible panty line when worn under certain tight pieces of clothing. It also doesn't have a high leg cut like the others, so it doesn't create as much of a flattering silhouette. Best for comfort Boux Avenue Smoothing Built In Support Bodysuit, £35 Pros: Thong back so no visible panty line; different skin tones available; supportive on the bust Cons: Needs smaller sizes as it doesn't sculpt/compress the stomach as well as it could The Smoothing Built In Support Bodysuit from Boux Avenue ranked highest for me in terms of comfort. With all the others, I think you would reach the end of the day feeling a sigh of relief to finally be out of your shaping bodysuit. However, this is one you could easily wear for the entire day without even having a thought that you're wearing shapewear. As with H&M's one, there is a variety of skin tones to choose from, and the adjustable straps, combined with the seamless stretch-knit material, make this great for supporting your chest. If there were smaller sizes available and/or slightly better compression on the stomach area, this would rank as my number one. The smallest size is a small cup size A-D. I'm a pretty standard size 10 and find this ever-so-slightly baggy at the waist, meaning if you were any smaller, it may border on being too big. However, this is dependent on your body shape.
