Beier double helps Dortmund beat Mainz 3-1 for first win in three
DORTMUND, Germany, March 30 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund eased to a 3-1 win over visitors Mainz 05 on Sunday with two goals from Maximilian Beier to earn their first win in three league matches as they battle to get back into Champions League contention with seven matches left to play.
Beier tapped in from a Karim Adeyemi cutback in the 39th minute before Emre Can headed in at the far post from a corner three minutes later.
The hosts, who face Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on April 9, added a third with a 72nd-minute header by Beier to make sure of the win that lifted them to 10th place on 38 points.
Mainz, who dropped to fourth place on 45, cut the deficit with a goal from Paul Nebel four minutes later. The top four teams win automatic Champions League qualification.

'I'll beat the S*** out of you!': Furious Inter Milan star Francesco Acerbi threatens fan in feisty exchange after being taunted over Champions League final defeat by PSG
Inter Milan defender Francesco Acerbi threatened a fan in a PSG shirt after being taunted about last month's Champions League final. The Serie A side were thrashed 5-0 by Luis Enrique's men in last month's final - the heaviest defeat ever recorded in the final of the competition. During the latter stages of the match, Acerbi was left sprawling after some dazzling footwork by Bradley Barcola - and a fan in Seattle reminded him of the moment. On a video that went viral on social media, the visibly annoyed Italian international sought the help of a translator during a meet-and-greet with fans. The translator told the fan in English on Thursday: 'You must be serious with him.' Seconds later, Acerbi stepped in to say in Italian: 'I´m serious. Don't make fun of me - I don´t like it. ... I´m crazy, I´ll beat the s*** out of you.' 📲🚨 Francesco Acerbi got into a verbal altercation with a PSG fan. 'Don't say 'Acerbi-Barcola', I don't like to be made a fool of. I am crazy and I'll beat the hell out of you.' — Inter Xtra (@Inter_Xtra) June 20, 2025 Acerbi then quickly moved on, posing for photos with other fans. The latest controversy surrounding the 37-year-old comes just weeks after he turned down a call-up for Italy's World Cup qualifiers - accusing Luciano Spalletti, who was later sacked, of disrespecting him. Acerbi posted on social media: 'It's not a decision I have taken lightly. However, I believe that in light of recent events the conditions aren't there today for me to go forward with serenity. I demand respect. If that respect is lacking from those who should lead the group, I prefer to step aside. 'I won't stay where I'm no longer truly wanted and it's clear I'm not part of the coach's project.' Acerbi's Inter will return to action against Japanese side Urawa Reds in their second Club World Cup match on Saturday.

Gareth Bale part of rejected group bid to buy Cardiff City
Gareth Bale is part of a United States investment group hoping to buy League One club Cardiff City, according to reports. The 35-year-old former Wales Captain is understood to be part of a consortium that approached current Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan with a letter of intent to buy the club last month. The Athletic reports that the letter included financial figures but the bid was rejected. Cardiff declined to comment on Friday night. Earlier this week the US consortium was also linked with a takeover of Plymouth Argyle. Bale retired from football in January 2023 at the age of 33. He won five Champions League titles with Real and is the men's all-time record goalscorer for Wales with 41 in 111 caps. He was linked with an emotional move to Cardiff, his hometown club, after leaving Madrid in 2022 but instead joined MLS side LAFC. Bale featured for Wales at the 2022 World Cup – their first appearance at the global finals since 1958 – and at the Euros in 2016 and 2020. Cardiff were relegated to League One last season and appointed Brian Barry-Murphy as their new manager this is seeking to be the latest big sporting name to be associated with an EFL club. His former Real team-mate Luka Modric became an investor in and co-owner of Championship side Swansea in April, while ex-NFL quarterback Tom Brady has a minority stake in Birmingham.
