Ancelotti likely to retain Real Madrid veteran over 26-year-old star in cup final vs Barcelona
As Real Madrid gear up for their upcoming Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, there has been much debate about the goalkeeping position.
Up until now, Andriy Lunin has been the regular for Real Madrid in between the sticks, showcasing stellar displays.

Given his role as a cup goalkeeper, it was given that the 26-year-old Ukrainian may start against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final.
Courtois to get the nod ahead of Lunin
According to SPORT, it appears Ancelotti is unlikely to play Lunin this weekend and has instead put his faith in Thibaut Courtois.
It's a scenario that feels eerily familiar to last season's Champions League final, where Lunin had been the main man in goal throughout the knockout rounds, only to be benched in the final upon Courtois' return from injury.
This time around, too, Lunin will have the settle for a place on the bench to make way for Courtois.

Lunin has started each of Real Madrid's five Copa del Rey matches this season. The Ukrainian has also featured in five La Liga games and two Champions League ties, offering solid performances whenever called upon.

At the same time, though, one can hardly argue with Ancelotti's deciison either as Courtois has been a saviour for the club time and time again.
Given Real Madrid's poor track record against Barcelona this season, the onus will be on the Belgian to keep a valued cleaned.
Courtois was able to keep a clean sheet in Real Madrid's most recent win over Getafe, where he notably commended the team spirit after such a win.

Lewandowski to boycott national team under current coach

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski said Sunday he would not play for his national team Poland so long as coach Michal Probierz remained in charge. The 36-year-old has played 158 times for Poland, scoring 85 goals, but earlier in the day was replaced as team captain by Piotr Zielinski. Advertisement "Taking into account the circumstances and a loss of trust in the coach, I have decided to resign from playing for the Poland national team for as long as he remains in charge," Lewandowski said on X. But the former Bayern Munich centre-forward left the door open for a return. "I hope I will still have another chance to play again for the best fans in the world," he said. Probierz has been Poland coach since 2023, and led them to the Euro 2024 finals where they failed to win a game and were eliminated in the group stage. Earlier on Sunday, the Polish Football Association announced on its website the coach's decision to replace Lewandowski as skipper. Lewandowski is not part of the Polish squad in the current international window. According to Polish news agency PAP, the player asked to be excused to rest. Lewandoswki has just won a domestic Spanish treble with his club Barcelona. Poland beat Moldova 2-0 on June 6 in a friendly and faces Finland on Tuesday in Helsinki in Group G of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With two wins from as many matches, Poland top the group. sw/hpa/bm/dmc/pb

Ronaldo scores to take Nations League final to extra time with Portugal and Spain level at 2-2

Associated Press MUNICH (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo scored to send the Nations League final into extra time on Sunday with Portugal and Spain level at 2-2. Ronaldo equalized in the 61st minute with his record-extending 138th goal for Portugal after Mikel Oyarzabal had given Spain a 2-1 halftime lead. Oyarzabal squeezed the ball past Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the 45th after Pedri played him in. Martin Zubimendi had broken the deadlock in the 21st minute with a tap in when Portugal's defense failed to deal with Lamine Yamal's cross, then Nuno Mendes leveled five minutes later when he drilled a low shot inside the far post. The 40-year-old Ronaldo went off to a standing ovation and a hug from coach Roberto Martínez in the 88th. There will be penalties if neither team can win the match in extra time. Earlier, Kylian Mbappe led France to third place with a 2-0 win over host nation Germany in Stuttgart. The Real Madrid star scored one goal and set up the other for Michael Olise as France recovered from a lethargic first half. ___ AP soccer:
