Johor-Singapore SEZ key to Johor's economic growth says Onn Hafiz
Johor recorded RM30.1 billion in approved investments for the first quarter of 2025, alongside a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 6.4%, surpassing the national average. 'This is no small feat. It proves Johor is not only a key economic driver in southern Malaysia but also among the leading states contributing to national growth,' he said during the launch of the 2025 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas, here, today.
Onn Hafiz expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his unwavering support for Johor's development. He also welcomed recent federal initiatives, including the one-off RM100 aid and proposed RON95 petrol price reduction. 'Johor remains fully aligned with federal programmes like Bakul Kasih, Jualan Kasih, and affordable housing projects,' he added.
The choice of Muar as the launch venue holds historical significance, being the hometown of independence figures like Datuk Onn Jaafar and Tan Sri Mohamed Noah Omar. 'Their courage and dedication inspire us. Hosting this event here honours our roots,' he said. - Bernama

Indonesia's copper export to the US gets zero tariff
JAKARTA: Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani confirmed that Indonesian copper will be subject to a zero-per cent import tariff in the United States, while negotiations continue to expand this exemption to other commodities, reported Antara news agency. "For copper, we get a 0 per cent tariff," Roeslani stated during the 2025 Indonesia-Japan Executive Dialogue here on Wednesday (Aug 6). The minister stated that Indonesia is still negotiating with the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to reduce import tariffs for other commodities, such as nickel and palm oil, and he expressed optimism about achieving favourable results for Indonesia. "We are negotiating (the tariff reduction) for other commodities. So far, we got (zero tariff) for copper, and other commodities such as nickel are likely to be approved, even if not at zero per cent, but at least lower than the current 19 per cent tariff," he remarked. According to Roeslani, Indonesia is also seeking a tariff-free status for other commodities that are not produced in the United States. Earlier, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that Indonesia is seeking tariff reductions on commodities including crude palm oil, rubber, shorea wood, and copper derivatives. In the latest Indonesia-US trade agreement in July, the US administration agreed to reduce the tariff, which was initially set at 32 per cent by President Donald Trump last April, to 19 per cent. In exchange, Indonesia has committed to purchasing US$15 billion in US energy products and US$4.5 billion in US agricultural products, according to the US president on July 16. Indonesia also intends to purchase 50 Boeing jets, mostly Boeing 777 passenger jets, Trump stated. Muhyiddin confirms MCMC has summoned him over foreigner subsidy claim
KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin today confirmed that he has been summoned by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), which informed him that he would be called in for questioning. During the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat, Muhyiddin said he was puzzled as to what he was being investigated for. "I was informed today that MCMC is calling me in for questioning. They said they want to record my statement as a witness. "So I ask MCMC — have they investigated Tambun (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) as well?" said Muhyiddin (PN–Pagoh). His remarks were later interjected by Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, who confirmed that he had also received a letter from the Prime Minister instructing MCMC to conduct further investigations. "I received a letter from the Prime Minister this morning directing MCMC to investigate further into where this information originated from. "God willing, let's wait. MCMC will investigate where it came from." Yesterday, MCMC said it would take immediate action to investigate Muhyiddin's denial of allegations that he had defended the rights of foreigners in the RON95 fuel subsidy issue. The commission said the matter would be investigated in accordance with existing legal provisions. Muhyiddin also called on Anwar to apologise for allegedly accusing him of defending the rights of foreigners in the targeted RON95 fuel subsidy matter. He said that if the Tambun MP fails to apologise, he will file a motion to refer the Prime Minister to the Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee. "I want to say this as a friend — yes, he's human too, although he holds a high office. I myself have held that position before. Perhaps a mistake has been made. "It may be difficult for the Prime Minister to say, 'Muhyiddin, I'm sorry, I was wrong.' "But that's all he needs to say. I only ask one thing from Tambun — just apologise. Withdraw the statement and I will accept his apology immediately. "But let me be clear: if Tambun does not apologise, I will bring this matter to the Rights and Privileges Committee," he said.

Strategic Framework And National Care Action Plan Now In Final Phase
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The Strategic Framework and Care Action Plan in Malaysia 2026-2030, currently being developed by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM), is now in its final stage of preparation. Its Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said that various engagement sessions have been held to ensure the plan aligns with the country's current and long-term needs, including the National Ageing Action Plan 2025-2045, which is currently being drafted. 'One of the key areas KPWKM will focus on is the establishment of an efficient and sustainable long-term care (LTC) service ecosystem. 'At the same time, the ministry is also planning to launch the National Action Plan for Senior Citizens 2026-2030, which will include elements such as safety and protection, lifelong learning, and intergenerational engagement and cohesion,' she said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. She was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari (PH-Gombak), who asked the ministry to state the number of informal workers registered in the care economy sector and the ministry's policies and preparations to address an ageing population. Commenting on the number of informal workers in the care economy sector, Nancy said currently, no official data has been collected on care services provided by either formal or informal carers in the country. However, she said data collection on care services will be one of the core components of the Strategic Framework and Care Action Plan 2026-2030. 'For the record, to date, KPWKM has recorded a total of 6,744 individuals who hold the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) in Care and Community Services, while another 43,869 individuals possess professional skills in child care. 'These individuals have the skills and qualifications to offer formal care services,' she said.
