He stated that by 2035, the state is expected to have 30 functional government medical colleges. In addition, applications from private entities have been received, though permission for such institutions would be granted only after the proposed government colleges become operational. As a result, Assam is expected to have over 60 medical colleges - both public and private - by 2035.
Highlighting recent developments, the Chief Minister stated that 500 doctors have already been appointed to the health department this year. He said that, by 2030, medical colleges in the state should be producing at least 1,500 MBBS graduates annually, which would also alleviate the shortage of postgraduate-qualified doctors. With enhanced infrastructure and academic facilities, Assam is poised to be recognised as a state with a competent medical workforce by 2035 and is likely to emerge as a centre for both medical education and health tourism.

He mentioned that private players have expressed interest in healthcare ventures in Assam: the
Medanta Group
has proposed a 1,000-bed nursing home with a five-star hotel in Guwahati, while the Ambuja Neotia Group has plans to develop a 500-bed hospital and a luxury hotel in Borjhar. He expressed confidence that the state could become a global supplier of medical professionals.
Sarma informed that the state government has begun offering foreign language training to nursing students and other professionals. He remarked that nurses employed abroad - such as in Japan and Singapore - are earning between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 2.5 lakh per month, and that discussions are underway with the United Arab Emirates for similar opportunities.
He added that medical graduates and postgraduates from Assam may also be able to access international employment opportunities, provided educational standards are consistently upheld. Citing global interest following the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, he stated that Japan and South Korea have expressed intent to collaborate with Assam in the medical sector. He further observed that while Assam's infant and maternal mortality rates are currently lower than the national average, sustained efforts are still required to ensure improved quality of healthcare delivery.
The Chief Minister urged Assam Medical College & Hospital to keep pace with contemporary trends and evolve into a premier institution for quality medical education. He acknowledged the historic role of the institution as the sole provider of medical education in Upper Assam but noted that recent establishments in Jorhat and Tinsukia, and ongoing construction in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Golaghat, would help redistribute the patient load. Consequently, he suggested that the college reorient itself as a specialised referral hospital focusing on critical care.
Sarma also referred to the assurance he made during the college's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in November 2022 to build residential facilities for faculty, staff, and students. The current foundation-laying marks the first phase of that commitment, covering one-third of the total housing requirement. The subsequent phases would cater to the remaining housing needs, including those of the dental and BSc nursing colleges, with an estimated outlay of Rs. 1,000 crores. He also mentioned that work has commenced on the CT Hospital wing. Furthermore, he expressed hope that the institution, which currently offers 200 MBBS seats, would receive approval for an additional 50 seats in the present academic year.

New Delhi: More than 1.06 lakh claims have been settled under the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme since its launch in October last year, Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday. This portability feature is available to both AB-PMJAY and Vay Vandana scheme beneficiaries. The Vay Vandana scheme beneficiaries can also avail treatment at a network of 14,194 private healthcare providers, the minister said. The National Health Authority (NHA) has issued hospital empanelment and management guidelines for empanelment of hospitals under AB-PMJAY. Live Events In a separate reply, Jadhav said that settlement of claims is an ongoing process. Under AB-PMJAY, claims are settled by respective State Health Agencies (SHA). The NHA has laid down guidelines for payment of claim to hospitals within 15 days of claims submission for the intra-state hospitals and within 30 days in case of portability claims (hospitals located outside state). Claims are required to be settled within the timeline specified under the scheme, Jadhav said in the written reply. Notable improvements have been recorded in the overall average Turnaround Time (TAT) for claim settlements year on year. Regular review meetings are organized to take stock of the progress with regards to the claims, he said. Further, capacity building activities are organised for efficient claims settlement. As per the terms and conditions of empanelment, hospitals cannot deny treatment to eligible beneficiaries of the scheme. In instances other than treatment denial due to exclusion by the empanelled hospital, beneficiaries can lodge grievances, Jadhav said. Under AB-PMJAY, a three-tier grievance redressal system at district, state and national level has been created to resolve the issues faced by beneficiaries in utilizing healthcare services. At each level, there is a dedicated nodal officer and Grievance Redressal Committees to address the grievances. Beneficiaries can file their grievances using different mediums including web-based portal Centralized Grievance Redressal Management System (CGRMS), Central and state call centers (14555), email, letter to State Health Agencies, etc. Based on the nature of grievance, necessary action including providing of support to the beneficiaries in availing treatment under the scheme, is taken, the minister stated. Further, to improve hospital participation, health benefit packages used under AB-PMJAY have been revised and rationalized five times since the launch of the scheme, he said.

What is CTE? Why this brain disease is behind Manhattan shooting by Shane Tamura
Manhattan shooter Shane Tamura blamed football for his brain disease CTE. Shane Tamura, the crazed gunman who killed five people inside a Midtown skyscraper that housed many offices, mentioned CTE several times in his long manifesto, which can also be read as a suicide not,e as he ended his life after killing people in the office. CTE is Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, which is a degenerative brain disease caused by repeated head trauma, such as concussions or even sub-concussive hits (blows that don't cause symptoms but still jolt the brain). Football players, boxers, hockey players, military veterans are often diagnosed with this disease. Tamura claimed that he was suffering from CTE and blamed football for his condition. New York Post reported that in his note, he thanked a documentary on CTE brain injuries and listed the names of several prominent neuroscientists. 'Terry Long, football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,' Tamura wrote. 'You can't go against the NFL, they'll squash you.' 'Please study brain for CTE. I'm sorry. The league knowingly concealed the dangers to our brains to maximize profits. They failed us," he wrote. In CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy), the brain deteriorates over time due to repeated hits to the head—even if those hits don't cause a full concussion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo CTE is rare and not completely understood by doctors, and there is no way to diagnose the disease in a living person – doctors can only confirm the disease in an autopsy after death. The disease has been linked to football, given the contact-heavy, physical nature of the sport. The note mentioned 'Fainaru brothers' — the two ESPN reporters who co-wrote the 'League of Denial' book. Elsewhere, the names of several doctors were featured on one page, including Dr. Ann McKee, the chief of neuropathology at BU Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and Dr. Christopher Nowinski, the co-founder of Boston University's CTE Center. Tamura has been described as a mentally unstable person but there is no history of him professionally playing football. But it is believed that his apparent target was the NFL office, which was at the same building but he did not kill anyone from NFL and ended up killing Wesley LePatner, an executive of Blackstone. Tamura worked as a security guard at a Las Vegas casino and he did not report to duty Sunday. He drove through several states to reach New York City just hours before the mass shooting. Tamura's car was spotted passing through Colorado on July 26, Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and Columbia, New Jersey, at 4:24 p.m. Monday. And then he drove into Manhattan. Cops found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, extra ammunition, magazines, a backpack and medication prescribed to him searching his car. He had a concealed firearms permit from Las Vegas with a 2027 expiration date. CTE and football A 2017 study by Boston University's CTE Center found that of the 111 NFL brains it examined, 110 had some level of CTE. In September 2024, a study by the Football Players Health Study at Harvard University revealed that out of a sample of 2,000 former NFL players, about a third believed they have CTE.
