Anwar: Appreciation package to be announced tomorrow or Wednesday
PUTRAJAYA (July 21): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said a special gesture of appreciation for the people is expected to be announced tomorrow or Wednesday.
He said more time is needed to finalise the announcement following the Unity Government retreat in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan yesterday.
'The retreat focused on explaining government policies while also listening to public concerns, which led me to consider certain changes and announcements to help ease these issues.
'I mentioned that I would make an announcement within a day or two (whether in the form of additional measures or otherwise) but it requires some careful review,' he said at the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly here today.
On July 19 in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Anwar had hinted that that the extraordinary appreciation to be announced would involve government measures to address the rising cost of living.
Anwar acknowledged that although policies are carefully planned at the federal level, there is often a perceived disconnect between policy implementation and the reality experienced by the people.
'When we plan, we believe we've done our best. But sometimes, the views at the grassroots level differ. There seems to be a disconnect, partly due to political spin, partly due to misinformation — but some concerns are genuine and must be taken seriously,' he said.
At the same time, Anwar rejected claims that the people are burdened by the Sales and Services Tax (SST) and base electricity tariffs, describing the 'tariff hike, tax hike' narrative as a distortion of facts that does not reflect the actual situation.
'I ask, are you representing the people or the business tycoons? Some large industries may be affected, but 85 per cent of the public are exempt from the increase,' he said.
Anwar said the revised tariffs introduced by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) target only high-profit industries, with no impact on domestic users.
He added that the new electricity tariff structure has not resulted in a general increase in electricity costs. On the contrary, it has led to a 19 per cent reduction for the majority of users.
'There are also additional reductions for consumption during non-peak hours. But the key point is, once implemented, this is the fact — there was no increase.
'Overall, electricity costs fell by 19 per cent, from 55.95 sen (Rp3) to 45.40 sen (Rp4). So, if you compare your latest bill to the previous month's, it is lower,' he said. announcement anwar ibrahim appreciation electricity lead tariffs

Rally Ends Peacefully Without Incident
KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- The rally at Dataran Merdeka today concluded peacefully without any untoward incident with about 18,000 individuals attending. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said they were grateful for the good cooperation shown by participants, who did not create any problems throughout the rally. 'Everything went smoothly, even though there were one or two things that might not have been agreed upon initially, but were resolved well,' he told reporters after the rally ended this evening. He also advised the organisers to be more transparent in sharing information with the authorities in the future to ease security and logistic controls. 'Malaysians have the right to gather, and to gather peacefully. In terms of safety, that's the most important. Sometimes if we don't allow an event, it usually is due to a safety issue, as that is a responsibility of the police,' he said, adding that 3,000 police officers and personnel were mobilised to ensure safety throughout the duration of the rally. Mohamed Usof also said the police would study the speeches delivered by several leaders at the rally, especially if there were elements touching on 3R (religion, race, royalty) or seditious in nature. 'The right to gather peacefully is there, but we are still bound by existing laws. If there are violations, action will be taken according to legal provisions,' he said, adding that there were over 60 reports lodged regarding the rally, mostly by those who disagreed with it being organised. An internal postmortem to access aspects that could be improved would also be conducted, Mohamed Usof said. -- BERNAMA

Make SSPN Primary Incentive Scheme For Staff, Students
KOTA KINABALU, July 26 (Bernama) -- State governments and public and private agencies are encouraged to prioritise the National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN) as the main option for incentives to employees and students. Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said Simpan SSPN, managed by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), is crucial in ensuring access to education is not hindered by financial constraints. 'Since 2004, PTPTN has focused on promoting savings to reduce dependence on loans. Over two decades, Simpan SSPN has maintained strong performance each year and gained public trust,' he said when officiating the Simpan SSPN Heritage Children's Carnival (KAWAN) 2025 here today. Mustapha said total deposits under Simpan SSPN reached RM21.93 billion across 6.98 million accounts as of June 30, a milestone reflecting consistent support since its launch in 2004. He urged parents to consider Simpan SSPN as the preferred savings vehicle to secure their children's education. 'Saving for education is a long-term investment that ensures our children's future,' he said, adding deposits in Sabah alone amounted to RM689.84 million from more than 500,000 accounts. Regarding KAWAN 2025, Mustapha described it as a progressive initiative to foster a savings culture among the younger generation while promoting creativity and appreciation of cultural heritage. He also encouraged parents to leverage the programme as financial preparation for their children's pursuit of higher education. Meanwhile, PTPTN chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim said depositors enjoy various benefits under Simpan SSPN, including income tax relief of up to RM8,000 annually.

Anwar thanks security personnel on duty at rally, reaffirms democratic commitment
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today expressed his deep appreciation to all security personnel and volunteers who ensured public safety and the smooth running of today's gathering in the capital. "I extend my utmost gratitude to all members of the security forces, (namely) the police, fire and rescue department, medical personnel, and volunteers, who served with speed, discipline, and dedication in maintaining public order and ensuring the event proceeded smoothly," he said in a statement posted on his Facebook today. Anwar also thanked those who participated in the gathering, regardless of their purpose, whether to voice opinions, show solidarity, or simply observe. "To all those who attended, whether to express your views, show support, or who travelled from afar, I wish you a safe journey home. "May you travel safely and under divine protection," he said. As the prime minister, Anwar reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to democratic principles, particularly the freedom of speech and the right to express dissent. "Criticism and differing views should not be seen through a lens of hostility. "Instead, they must be allowed to flourish as the lifeblood of a mature, progressive, and sovereign nation. "What matters is that such expression is carried out peacefully, respectfully, and in the spirit of patriotism," he said. He said this principle is reflected in the Prime Minister's Question Time (PMQT) in Parliament, where members of parliament are free to pose any questions directly to him. "I urge all of you to continue pressing your elected representatives to attend and actively participate in all sessions, especially PMQT," he added. He said he also encouraged continued dialogue and constructive discourse beyond street demonstrations. "I invite everyone to engage in national dialogue, to find common ground, and to build this country together, not only in the streets, but through meaningful efforts in new arenas of knowledge, innovation, and progress, to move Malaysia forward with strength and energy," he said. He also invited the public to return to Kuala Lumpur in the future, citing ongoing efforts to conserve key historical landmarks in the capital, including the iconic Sultan Abdul Samad Building at Dataran Merdeka. "These efforts are part of a wider plan to boost tourism and strengthen the economy of our capital, rich with history, hope, and national spirit, particularly in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026, which promises a variety of exciting activities, Insya-Allah," he said.
