From the Farm: Global March Women's Month Celebrated at Hard Rock Northern Indiana

Chicago Tribune14-03-2025

I'm an avid reader of autobiographies about the true legends of the ever-shifting music recording world.
I'm also a devotee of Broadway bio stage musicals dedicated to the mountains and valleys traveled by performance artists navigating the tough terrain of the music industry. For women in this career field, the fight to cultivate a career, keep it and to control it is often even a greater tooth-and-nail struggle.
Recent Broadway shows launched in the past decade, inspired by the lives, music and careers of Cher, Tina Turner, and Donna Summer, to name a few female heroes, put the spotlight on the success, failures and personal life journeys as blended into the shifting sands of bright versus what can be fading stardom.
Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana in Gary is devoting this month to celebrating International Women's Month for March, as well as a few days showcased for added flavor next week themed for St. Patrick's Day menu specials.
The menu items highlighted at the Hard Rock Café eatery are themed in a proceeds partnership with Colombian rock star and humanitarian Shakira, who just celebrated her 48th birthday in February.
There's a Colombian Smash Burger, layered with the contrasting crunch of kettle chips and the soft sensation of a fried egg as one of the featured hits, along with a hearty chicken Caesar salad and libations such as a 'Hips Don't Lie' margarita contrasted by a non-alcoholic cocktail comprised of fresh lime and cucumber muddled with fresh mint and elderflower tonic. The signature dessert highlight is a decadent 'Dulce de Leche Brownie.'
A portion of the food sales proceeds benefit Shakira's Fundacion Pies Descalzos which translates to 'Barefoot Foundation' in English. It is the Colombian charity founded by Shakira in 1997 to help poor and impoverished children, primarily focusing on education, nutrition, and healthcare in Colombia.
Also throughout this holiday weekend, Friday through Monday, the Hard Rock Café will feature a special Irish menu item called the Irish Smash Burger created with two smashed burger patties, pub cheese, white cheddar cheese, cabbage bacon jam, smoked bacon and pickles served with seasoned fries. Two specialty cocktails on the menu toasting the weekend are The Irish Apple Crush featuring muddled green apples, Jameson Irish Whiskey, apple juice, lemon and Seagram's Ginger Ale, in addition to the option of Irish Coffee made with Jameson Irish Whiskey, coffee, brown sugar simple syrup and whipped cream.
Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana is located at 5400 West 29th Ave. in Gary, with more information about dining, events and entertainment available by calling 219-228-2383 or www.hardrockcasinonorthernindiana.com.
Among the more than 150 costumes and memorabilia on display at Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana are gowns and wardrobe pieces showcased from renowned women such as Shakira, Cher, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Mariah Carey, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Cyndi Lauper, Miley Cyrus, Nikki Minaj, Rihanna, Sheryl Crow, Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, Fergie Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, and Diana Ross and Mary Wilson, the latter duo being two of the three legendary members of The Supremes.
I've interviewed both Ross, who turns 81 on March 26, as well as the late Mary Wilson, who died at age 76 in February 2021. Both were founding members of The Supremes, which music producer Berry Gordy ranked as his most successful Motown act of the 1960s and best-charting female group in U.S. chart history.
These two formed the musical trio with the late Florence Ballard, who was later replaced by Cindy Birdsong in 1967 in a show business backstage bitter scenario which is told in the Broadway musical 'Dream Girls.' Ballard, who suffered from alcoholism, depression and financial ruin, died at age 32 in 1976. She was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Supremes in 1988.
While Ross doesn't welcome questions about Wilson, Mary Wilson was always outspoken and opinionated about Ross, not only in interviews but also in her two published autobiographies.
Wilson told me when Ross organized a 'Supremes' reunion tour in 2000 (which I reviewed at Allstate Arena), Ross only offered Wilson and Birdsong a fraction salary compared to what Ross was to net, prompting both Wilson and Birdsong to refuse to reunite. Ross continued with the tour, enlisting singers Lynda Laurence and Scherrie Payne, both later members of The Supremes long after Ross departed from the original group, to join her on the 'reunion' tour which generated disappointing reviews and ticket sales.
The last time I interviewed singer Mary Wilson was when she did a holiday tour with Abdul 'Duke' Fakir of the Four Tops for Christmas 2013.
Wilson, even while touring, always tried to eat healthily. In her later years, she teamed with author pal Mark Bego to write a recipe blog titled 'Cook Like a Rock Star' and many recipes are still archived at www.markbegocooks.weebly.com. Mary's recipe for a creamy and zesty artichoke heart and tomato soup is perfect for our meatless Lenten Fridays until Easter. Mary and Mark thought of the idea of replicating this recipe while sampling a similar soup offering at a restaurant in Louisville during the 2014 Kentucky Derby.
While not in their original recipe, I like to transfer the soup to a blender and puree it until smooth and velvety before heating it and serving it garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and freshly ground black pepper.

Mary Wilson's Creamy Artichoke and Tomato Soup
Makes 8-10 servings
2 cups chopped onion
2 cups chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped garlic
1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup fresh chopped oregano
1/4 cup fresh chopped basil
1 can (28 ounces) of diced tomatoes
1 can (15 ounce) tomato sauce
1 pint half and half (or one cup heavy cream)
1 cup white wine
1 can (14 ounces) quartered artichoke hearts
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Grated Parmesan cheese to sprinkle on top
Directions:
In a large pot, combine the onions, celery, garlic and olive oil, and sauté the vegetables over medium-high heat, until softened.
Add the oregano, basil, canned tomatoes, tomato sauce, half and half, white wine, artichoke hearts, salt and pepper to the pot, and stir together.
Transfer contents of soup pot one cupful at a time to blender, and puree until smooth and return to soup pot. Bring the mixture to a boil.
When the soup begins to bubble, turn it down to a low temperature, and continue to simmer for 30 minutes. This 30 minutes of simmering is when all the flavors begin to meld together, and the creamy half-and-half takes on the faint red color and the taste of the tomatoes. Stir occasionally to prevent soup from burning on the bottom of the pot.
Serve the soup in individual bowls; sprinkle the tops with grated Parmesan cheese and additional ground black pepper.

‘Dog Day Afternoon' Is Broadway Bound With Actors From ‘The Bear'

'Dog Day Afternoon,' a classic New York film about an ill-planned bank robbery in Brooklyn, has been adapted for the stage and will come to Broadway next spring. The production will star Jon Bernthal and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, both of whom have won Emmy Awards for their work in FX's 'The Bear.' The director will be Rupert Goold, who is the artistic director of the Almeida Theater in London and who has received Tony nominations for two of his previous Broadway shows, 'King Charles III' and 'Ink.' 'Dog Day Afternoon' tells the story of a group of hapless criminals who rob a bank, partly because one of them (a character named Sonny, played by Al Pacino in the 1975 film and to be played by Bernthal onstage) wants money to pay for his partner's gender-transition surgery. The robbery turns into a hostage-taking and a confrontation with law enforcement. The film, directed by Sidney Lumet, was based on a true story; it won an Academy Award for Frank Pierson's screenplay. The stage adaptation, a project that was previously announced in 2016, has been written by the playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 2015 for his drama 'Between Riverside and Crazy,' which was produced on Broadway in 2023. Guirgis has an ear for dialogue of down-and-out New Yorkers, and has written a number of acclaimed plays about working-class characters. Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach are best known for their work onscreen — Bernthal stars opposite Ben Affleck in 'The Accountant' and 'The Accountant 2,' while Moss-Bachrach's credits include 'Girls' and the upcoming movie 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps.' They will be making their Broadway debuts in this play, but both are experienced stage actors. Bernthal studied theater in Moscow, founded an upstate New York theater company, and has performed Off Broadway and at regional theaters; Moss-Bachrach began his stage career at Williamstown Theater Festival in New York and has since performed Off Broadway and in California. The play is being produced by Warner Bros. Theater Ventures (Warner Bros. produced the movie), along with Sue Wagner, John Johnson and Patrick Catullo. The announcement on Wednesday did not specify dates or a theater.

'Wicked: For Good' trailer drops today: Here's how to watch

Get ready to be changed "for good," because the trailer for the second " Wicked" film debuts Wednesday. According to a Universal Pictures press release, fans will get a "special first look" at the new trailer for "Wicked: For Good" -- the second half of the two-part "Wicked" film series -- on Wednesday evening, when the first "Wicked" film returns to theaters for a special one-night-only screening. The trailer will debut simultaneously in all North American time zones at more than 100 theater locations in the U.S. and Canada, according to the press release, "so that all attendees will be able to see the trailer at once, no matter where they live." Screenings will take place at 3 p.m. PT, 4 p.m. MT, 5 p.m. CT and 6 p.m. ET. Moviegoers who watch the film in theaters Wednesday will also receive exclusive "Wicked: For Good" giveaways, including an exclusive "Wicked: For Good" commemorative poster, according to the press release. The trailer will also be shared online following the screenings. Last month, the official "Wicked" movie account shared a video on Instagram featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo announcing the exciting news about the "Wicked: For Good" trailer. "You will be changed," Grande said, before Erivo added, "For good," a reference to the musical's hit song "For Good." Earlier this week, Universal Pictures further teased the trailer with an epic video featuring Erivo as Elphaba, Grande as Glinda and the rest of the cast. A synopsis for "Wicked: For Good" states that the upcoming film "follows Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North." In 2022, "Wicked" director Jon M. Chu announced that "Wicked" would be split into two films as offering "more space" to tell the story "as it was meant to be told." The first "Wicked" film was released in November 2024. The cast also includes Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible. Jonathan Bailey stars as Fiyero, while Ethan Slater plays Boq and Marissa Bode plays Nessarose. "Wicked" earned 10 Oscar nominations at the 97th Academy Awards and won two: best costume design and best production design. Erivo was nominated for best actress and Grande was also nominated for best supporting actress. The films are based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 book, "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," which was inspired by L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." The musical adaptation of Maguire's story opened on Broadway in 2003. The original cast included Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda, Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Robert Morse as the Wizard. Norbert Leo Butz played Fiyero, Michelle Federer portrayed Nessarose and Carole Shelley played Madame Morrible.

At Long Last, George Clooney Shared His Thoughts on ‘The Pitt'

You can take the actor out of the emergency room, but you can't take the emergency room out of the actor. Case in point: Former ER star George Clooney has nothing but kind words to say about his former costar Noah Wyle and Wyle's new propulsive medical drama, the HBO Max phenomenon The Pitt. On a June 3 appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Clooney chatted with Meyers to promote his Broadway show Good Night, and Good Luck, a dramatization of broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow's clashes with Senator Joseph McCarthy during the senator's anti-Communist witch hunts during the 1950s. Clooney previously directed and costarred in a film version of Good Night, and Good Luck, released in 2007. After Meyers and Clooney discussed his Broadway show, the late-night host brought up both E/R (a forgotten sitcom that Clooney coincidentally appeared on early in his career) and ER, the broadcast TV juggernaut that catapulted him forward. That's when Meyers brought up the current success of one of Clooney's ER costars, Noah Wyle, who is both the star and executive producer of The Pitt. The former Dr. Doug Ross had nothing but kind words for the former Dr. John Carter regarding The Pitt. "Have you guys seen that show?" Clooney asked the audience, to which the crowd cheered. "It's so good." "We've been really dear friends since [ER], since we did the pilot. He's just the most honorable young man—I get to say, because I'm an old man. And I cannot be happier for his success on this show. The show is just a beautiful show. He does a great job with it." Clooney then comically admitted that he actually hated Noah Wyle for the effortless way he could recite medical jargon in ER's scripts. "He never had any trouble. He always could do it, and I hated him for it," joked Clooney. "People should hate Noah." While it's unlikely that Clooney will make a guest appearance on The Pitt—he is still busy as a movie star, and his last onscreen television performance was in the 2019 series Catch-22 on Hulu—it's comforting to know Clooney has kept tabs on one of his fellow ER alums. Strangely, that feels more like a Batman move than anything Dr. Ross would do. You Might Also Like Kid Cudi Is All Right 16 Best Shoe Organizers For Storing and Displaying Your Kicks
