ED raids Siddartha institutions linked to Karnataka HM Parameshwara
BENGALURU: The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Wednesday reportedly raided the premises of educational institutions belonging to Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, creating ripples in political circles. The opposition BJP linked it to actress Ranya Rao's gold smuggling case, while senior Congress leaders strongly condemned the ED action, terming it a politically motivated move.
'ED, which was investigating Ranya Rao's case for the last 2-3 months, might have had some credible information,' BJP spokesperson Prakash Shesharaghavachar told the media, linking it to the case of gold smuggling by Ranya Rao, who is in custody.
ED officials simultaneously raided Siddhartha medical colleges and hospitals at Tumakuru and Nelamangala, on Bengaluru outskirts, and the engineering college at Tumakuru. The searches started around 9 am and continued till evening. The officials verified documents related to alleged 'hawala' transactions, it is said. ED, however, is yet to make an official statement on the raids and seizures.
DCM DK Shivakumar defended Parameshwara, saying, 'I am sure that the home minister is not involved in any such case as he is a decent, simple man. Like anyone who met him, the others (involved in Ranya Rao's case) might have also met him. In no way Parameshwara is involved in it.'
AICC General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala came down heavily against Prime Minister Narendra Modi government, terming the raids vendetta politics aimed at Congress leaders.

As Cong seeks curbs on permissions for new constructions, PMC chief says ‘Will bring fundamental changes to improve citizens' lives'
EVEN as the Congress urged Pune Municipal Corporation to put curbs on new constructions in congested parts of the city, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said he was currently looking into problems faced by the city and will soon introduce fundamental changes aimed at easing the lives of Puneites. 'I have just taken charge… Currently, I am busy studying the problems the city is facing. Once I have studied the problems, I intend to bring in fundamental changes to better the lives of citizens,' the PMC chief said on Sunday evening. Ram was responding to a demand raised by the Congress in a letter to PMC, urging it to put curbs on giving permissions to new constructions in congested parts of the city, where adequate infrastructure was missing. 'I went around the city today. Though it was Sunday, there were traffic snarls on congested and narrow roads of the city. During the inspection, I found that only 16 per cent of the stormwater drain work has been completed. It seems PMC is lagging on ensuring adequate basic amenities,' he said. Ram said after studying the problems in the city, he would take all necessary steps to alleviate miseries of people. 'I will study all the suggestions and feedback I get from citizens… And will initiate necessary steps, especially in regard to ensuring basic amenities, including proper stormwater drains, parking facilities, good roads and a better garbage disposal system,' he said. In its letter sent to the PMC chief, the Congress emphasised improving basic infrastructure in the city. The party has urged the commissioner to take strong steps to make life better for citizens. 'We would like to draw the attention of the new PMC commissioner to the absence of adequate and efficient basic infrastructure in the congested parts of Pune city. Roads are narrow, storm water drains get choked even after just one heavy deluge, traffic snarls are common, parking problem has become a big headache… you name it and the citizens in the congested and old parts of the city are grappling with inadequate basic infrastructure,' said Congress spokesperson Gopal Tiwari. The Congress said it was expecting positive steps from the PMC chief. 'We have sent a letter to the PMC commissioner highlighting the problems faced by the citizens in congested parts of the city. We expect that he will initiate positive steps in this regard,' Tiwari said. 'The population of Pune city is increasing day by day and the pressure of additional external growth areas is also coming on the PMC. Traffic congestion and parking issues are becoming severe day by day. But the PMC without applying its mind is indiscriminately giving permission to multi-storeyed buildings up to 25-30 floors. Additional FSIs and TDRs are on a roll. But roads below the towering buildings have not been widened for 50 years. Be it Ghole Road, Apte Road, Bhandarkar Road, Prabhat Road, the situation is similar everywhere in congested parts of the city. The roads are not in a position to take the increasing load of traffic. The storm water drains are inadequate…. and the PMC chief should take steps to first curb permissions for new constructions,' said Tiwari, who is also the founder of the Rajiv Gandhi Smarak Samiti. Tiwari said the Development Plan or Town Plan needs to be revised. 'There is a need to revise the DP and TP so that they are framed taking into consideration the changing times. Especially, there is need to reserve ample parking space for two-wheelers and four-wheelers. If this is done, Pune City will become a chaotic city. Strong steps are needed now. There should be no compromise on this front,' he said. Tiwari said the PMC Standing Committee still exists though and an elected body is not in place. There is an 'Audit Sub-Committee' and audit reports of the work of various civic departments are placed before the Standing Committee which takes a decision on it. 'It is a necessary for the people of Pune to understand what action has been taken on the audit reports of the last three years,' he said. Shamed over ‘unpaid' fees, BPharm student ends life in Lucknow
Lucknow: A 25-year-old final-year bachelor of pharmacy (BPharma) student from a private college in Lucknow's Chinhat area died by suicide on June 5 after being publicly humiliated over pending semester fees. The incident sparked outrage among students and led to the arrest of a college accountant, with four other staff members named in an FIR. The deceased, identified as Shubham Kumar, a resident of Rae Bareli, was found hanging in his hostel room number 109 shortly after he was reportedly barred from attending a farewell function and his practical exams due to fee-related issues. According to his suicide note and statements from friends, he deposited the semester fee, but a technical error in the college's internal system continued to reflect Rs 22,000 as outstanding. On the day of the incident, Shubham arrived at the college to take part in practical examinations and the farewell event. However, he was allegedly stopped by the institution's accountant, who reportedly told him in front of peers, "You can join only after clearing your dues." Feeling humiliated, Shubham returned to his hostel. A few hours later, his friends found his room locked. " Following a complaint by his elder brother, police registered an FIR at Chinhat police station under sections 108 (abetment to suicide) and 352 (assault) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 3(2)(v) of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The FIR names five individuals from the college, including the principal, a faculty member, the dean, the accountant and another staff member. One of the accused, 32-year-old Mohammad Faiz, a senior accountant originally from Gonda and residing in Chinhat, was arrested on Saturday. Police are currently investigating the roles of the other four accused. Shubham's fellow students alleged that he was previously prevented from attending his practical exams due to the fee dispute. They also claimed that the issue was repeatedly raised with the college authorities, but no resolution was provided. After the news of his death broke, a large number of students gathered outside the hostel and staged a protest demanding a fair investigation and strict action against those responsible. During the protest, some students began recording videos of the scene, which led to an altercation with the hostel warden, who allegedly tried to stop them from filming. Shubham, described by his peers as hardworking and soft-spoken, had no known personal or academic problems except for the fee-related issue. According to the family, he was under stress for weeks due to the college's refusal to update its records despite his repeated clarifications. The incident has once again raised serious questions about the insensitivity of educational institutions in dealing with students' financial and emotional well-being.
