Five students remanded for three days over Besut MRSM bullying, as case probed for alleged rioting
KUALA TERENGGANU, June 27 — Five students of the Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) in Besut are on remand for three days from today in connection with a bullying case at the school.
The remand order, which expires this Sunday, was issued by Senior Assistant Registrar Yuhanis Mohd Roslan at the Magistrate's Court here.
The five students, aged between 15 and 17, were remanded for investigation under Section 147 of the Penal Code.
Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad @ Abu, in a statement yesterday, said a Form Two student lodged a report alleging he was bullied by several Form Three students around 11.30 pm last Tuesday, resulting in pain in his abdomen as well as right rib and bruises on his back.
The incident was discovered by a dormitory warden, who contacted the victim's family to send him for medical treatment. — Bernama

Man nabbed for stealing RM100,000 Rolex from parked car in Batu Pahat
BATU PAHAT, June 27 — A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing a Rolex watch worth more than RM100,000 that the owner had left in a car parked in the compound of his house in Taman Sinar Berlian, here. Batu Pahat police chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the victim discovered the theft at about 9.30pm last Tuesday after noticing signs of a break-in on his car. In addition to the Rolex watch, valued at RM100,700, the victim also reported RM700 missing from the vehicle, he said, adding that a search operation was launched immediately upon receiving the report. 'At about 3am the following day (June 25), police arrested the suspect at a house in Taman Seri Wangsa and recovered the stolen watch. Police also seized clothing and equipment believed to have been used during the break-in. 'A urine test conducted on the suspect returned positive for Methamphetamine and further checks revealed that he had 14 records for criminal and drug-related offences,' he said in a statement today. Meanwhile, in another case, two men aged 50 and 36 were arrested for alleged involvement in a housebreaking case in Taman Soga Sutera and the theft of a car that was parked in front of the house last Sunday (June 22). Shahrulanuar said the victim realised his house had been broken into after finding some of his valuables missing, with losses estimated at RM65,000. 'The first suspect was arrested in Peserai, at around 5pm the same day, while the second suspect was arrested a few hours later in Bandar Hilir, Melaka. Police also managed to recover the stolen items,' he said in a statement. He said police also seized clothes and several equipment believed to have been used by the suspect in the incident, as well as heroin weighing an estimated 27.28 grams (RM682) and Syabu weighing 4.26 grams (RM468.60). He said both of them tested positive for Methamphetamine, and with records for crime and drug-related offences. — Bernama

JUNE 27 — An appeal is a creature of statute and will only lie if a statute gives such a right and then only within the limits which the statute giving the right stipulates. Accordingly, by reason of Section 87(1) of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964, an appeal lies to the country's apex court -- that is, the Federal Court -- from any decision of the Court of Appeal in its appellate jurisdiction in respect of a criminal matter decided by the High Court in its original jurisdiction. This means that the criminal trial must commence in the High Court, as the case was in the corruption case of former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman. Man dies, wife and two children injured in two-vehicle collision on North-South highway near Kepala Batas
KEPALA BATAS, June 27 — A man, who was travelling with his wife and two children, was killed in an accident involving two vehicles at Kilometre 127.8 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) near here today. Assistant Director of the Fire and Rescue Operations Division of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in Penang, John Sagun Francis, said the department received an emergency call at 7.51am before dispatching a team from the Kepala Batas Fire and Rescue Station to the scene. 'The accident involved a Proton Wira and a Proton Saga BLM. There were five victims, three adults and two children, who were rescued by members of the public before our team arrived,' he said in a statement. He identified the deceased as the 33-year-old driver of the Proton Wira, who was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The body was sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital (HSJ) for post-mortem. 'His wife suffered spinal injuries while their two children, aged six and eight, were slightly injured,' he added. The driver of the Proton Saga, a 35-year-old man, also suffered minor injuries. — Bernama
