Prestwick singer set to release tribute song for victims of Great Fire of Ayr
Prestwick singer Debbie Campbell is set to release a tribute song for victims of Templeton's Carpet Factory fire.
A very destructive fire occurred in the Ayr factory in 1876, and claimed the lives of 29 people - 28 women and one man - with the youngest victim being only 11-years-old.
Debbie, together with her partner and songwriter Robert Neil and fellow musician Scott Nicol, recorded a brand new single, 'Forever Sisters', to tell the sad tale.
'Forever Sisters' will be released on Monday, June 16 to mark 149 anniversary since the tragedy took place.
Robert said: "I first heard the story of this tragedy from a service user when I was a mental health support worker.
"I decided to write the song after I went looking for a plaque near Fort Street but there was none.
"Forever Sisters started as a poem but then I thought it could work as a ballad.
"Debbie and Scott worked on the melody then Sam Gallagher at EssGee Productions in Cambuslang did a great job with the production."I have always been drawn to songs with a narrative, especially when they tell a true story."
Debbie said: "Next year it will be the 150th anniversary of this tragedy.
"It took Robert about a year to finish off as he kept going back to the words. He was very conscious of how he wanted the words to reflect the level of tenderness and sensitivity needed for such a story.
"When Robert passed me the lyrics I took them straight away to Scott Nicol and we worked on the melody fairly quickly.
"I knew what sort of sound I wanted for it, a nod to the old folk songs of the past, telling of tales long gone."
Debbie added: "What struck me most was the ages of the young women. The youngest was just 11-years-old.
"The line in the song 'Innocence had no place to hide' was sung by one of Scott's students, 12-year-old Mithian Perry.
"We felt that was a lovely tribute and Maggie Mitchell who is mentioned in the song, was only 12-years-old too, and she was the great, great, great, great aunt of Tracey Struthers.
"We would like to give thanks to Ken Nairn, a local historian, who I got in touch with to see what he knew about the Great Fire of Ayr, and he told me all about Tracey, who had done a lot of research on the subject."
While working on the song, Debbie, Robert and Scott were "surprised" by the lack of unawareness of the tragedy and the fact that there is no plaque to remember those who tragically died in the fire.
For the past few months it has been a mission to get a plaque up on the former site. Tracey, whose ancestor died in the fire, had been contacting both the council and the Fire Brigade Union about a plaque.
The Fire Brigade Union are now on board and assisting to make this happen.
Debbie added: "During Robert's research into the story, he found out about another group of people who had done some work on the Great Fire of Ayr too, The Time Team, based at Lochside Community Centre.
"The Time Team had been asking the council too about putting something up on the former building, and they are over the moon to hear that it is finally going to happen."
Debbie and Robert are also members of the Senior Screen Time, a club run by Eddy Gemmell from TV Ayrshire.
The duo thought the story of the Great Fire of Ayr would be perfect for the social history documentary they were doing.
Debbie said: "It's a Senior Screen Team project and is produced by the crew, of which myself and my partner Robert are part of.
"This will be part of the examples for Screen Scotland along with other films we have produced."
A documentary was recorded at the former site, as well as at Holmston Road Cemetery where the two coffins with the remains of 28 victims were placed.
Debbie said: "I believe the whole town of Ayr came out on the day of the funeral and followed the two coffins all the way up to Holmston Road to the cemetery.
"We know that a 16-year-old Catherine McKinnon jumped from the third floor and died hours later from her injuries. She is the only one who is buried elsewhere in the town."
While working on a documentary, Debbie and Robert also interviewed Tracey on her vast knowledge of the incident. Both Debbie and Robert said it not only helped with the documentary but it allowed them to complete the lyrics.
Tracey said: "Finding out at 13-years-old that my ancestor Maggie Mitchell had perished in the fire at 12-years-old in her place of work was difficult to understand. I lived two streets away just around the corner and walked through the car park right next to the site of the fire every day to get the bus to school.
"There was nothing marking the area to let anyone know that 29 poor souls had died. When I told people at school and my history teacher they had no idea.
"Those who died in 1876 had simply been forgotten. It was difficult enough conditions for adults working in mills and factories. I can not imagine an 11 or 12-year-old having to take on adult responsibilities in a workplace."
She added: "I was overwhelmed when Debbie contacted me to say she was recording a song about the fire, I welcome any highlighting of this tragedy, so that for many more generations those who suffered in the Great Fire of Ayr will always be remembered."

He will be very worried about Aaron's safety, but at the same time, I think at this point, maybe he's starting to doubt whether or not he's right about John. "Maybe John's gaslighting and manipulation's got through to him. Because everyone's saying the same things to Robert, that he's wrong about John and that he's just jealous." It has been a tough return to the village for Robert - who has been shunned by pretty much everyone over his behaviour with John and his hope of breaking things off between the village hero and Aaron Dingle. Emmerdale sex shock as passionate reunion confirmed for Robert and Aaron
John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth)'s attempts to discredit his brother and rival Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) backfire in forthcoming Emmerdale episodes – sending Robert back into the arms of John's husband, and Robert's ex, Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). When Robert first pitched up back in Emmerdale on the day of Aaron and John's wedding, it was immediately apparent that the attraction between Aaron and his ex was still strong. They ended up kissing passionately, before Aaron ultimately chose to go back to the wedding and marry John. Since then, John's level of loathing for Robert has been extremely high, which is a dangerous position to be in given that John has few qualms about dealing ruthlessly with people who are giving him problems. In upcoming episodes John is furious to see Robert and Aaron chatting at the cafe, and he decides to use his nephew Harry as a way to get back at Aaron by manipulating the boy. While Robert is looking after Harry, they boy's drumming causes an already stressed Robert to lose his temper – and John is on hand to walk in at that precise moment. This is excellent ammunition for John to go back to Victoria (Isabel Hodgins) with tales of Robert's nasty behaviour to her son Harry, and to reiterate to Aaron how bad a person Robert is. Then John visits Robert to rub it in that he's probably lost both Victoria and Aaron. Robert is in despair after this, and starts smashing up his room. Aaron hears this commotion and goes into the house, finding Robert apparently at the very end of his tether, a broken man. Aaron comforts him and reassures him that the situation isn't as bad as he thinks and there's still hope. Aaron admits that he has unresolved feelings for Robert, and that's why he's been pushing him away recently because he can't cope with how he feels. Overcome by emotion, the two men give in to their mutual feelings for each other and end up in bed together. Discussing these scenes, star Ryan Hawley said: 'Robert just kind of breaks down in Aaron's arms. And then we cut to the scene downstairs, when they're kind of talking amongst each other. And Robert says, you know, it's time for him to go. He needs to move on. 'He shouldn't have come back, but then Aaron convinces him not to and to stay, and he's been fighting feelings the whole time as well. And that's when we get our first Aaron and Robert love scene.' Afterwards, Aaron and Robert hear John and Victoria outside, discussing how they need to check that Robert's OK. Will they walk in on the pair and make a shock discovery? Emmerdale spoilers: Robert and Aaron 'affair', Mack exposes John and double exit
Emmerdale has a massive week of episodes lined up next week as revealed in new spoilers, with a possible death, a double exit teased and hints of a reunion for Robron It's a big week next week Emmerdale fans, with spoilers teasing some huge twists and turns you do not want to miss. There's a Robron update that will no doubt send fans of Aaron Dingle and Robert Sugden into meltdown. There's a double exit hint too, as well as possible murder given the recent rumours about a certain Mackenzie Boyd. One married couple look set to be torn apart, before fate may decide on things for them. It comes amid reports Mack will be killed off, making him the next victim of killer John Sugden. Also next week there's the reopening of a murder case, awkward romance drama and villain Ray is causing drama. There's also concern for Moira Dingle and Vinny Dingle faces turmoil. Let's kick off with one of the biggest twists of the week ahead, and something some fans have been manifesting for months. Robron could well reunite as an affair is teased for exes Aaron and Robert. Amid Aaron's marriage to Robert's villainous brother John, the pair give into temptation once more weeks on from their kiss. Robert is in utter turmoil, struggling to cope with recent events. As things escalate further and his mental health spirals, he's truly in a dark place - not helped by twisted John. John is still intent on getting rid of his brother, and next week he cruelly manages to drive a wedge between Robert and their sister Victoria over her young son Harry. Tearing apart their bond, John leaves Robert more alone than ever at a time where he needs all the support he can get. Luckily for him Aaron comes to the rescue, walking into the house to check on him only to find him trashing his room and he quickly intervenes. As for Victoria, she's been manipulated over the events with Harry the days before now, with John exaggerating what happened and it truly turns her against her brother. Robert's in total despair by the time Aaron arrives, with John having made Robert very aware he's now lost both his sister and his ex. It seems Aaron thinks otherwise though as he sits Robert down and gets him to open up. Aaron is in shock to see just how broken Robert is having never seen him like this before, and he does his best to support him as Robert claims he's lost everything. It's then that Aaron can't hold it in anymore and he blurts out his true, unresolved feelings, admitting this is why he's been distancing himself and pushing Robert away. One thing leads to another though as they give into passion and end up in bed together. But it's teased John and Victoria could walk in on the pair as they head back to the house to check in on Robert - so what will they find? Later in the week there's heartbreak when guilty Aaron tells him it was a one-off and a mistake. Robert thinks wrongly though, believing he and Aaron are about to reunite and that he's been picked over John - only to find out Aaron feels otherwise. Robert insists they are destined to be together, but this only heightens Aaron's turmoil. And this is where the plot intertwines with John's killer storyline, with Nate Robinson's murder case reopened. By the end of the week there could be another victim, but more on that later on. For now, John is rattled after hearing there's been a development. So when Aaron, equally rattled, suggests they move away for a fresh start it seems a double exit could loom. Aaron needs to get away from Robert, and John wants away from the village as his guilt over Nate threatens to tear him apart. It's an inconsistency in Owen's suicide note, the note John made to frame Owen for the murder, that leads to the police investigation being reopened. John is all over the place but decides to jump on the exit plan with Aaron, leaving the latter's mum Chas Dingle devastated to hear they might be moving away. John takes some holiday leave and they make plans to take some time away - but when John makes a chilling phone call what is it about? As the police look into the new evidence, the fresh questions about the murder leave Nate's loved ones in turmoil all over again. Suddenly the man who came to collect Nate's belongings from his house months ago as part of an ordered removal service shows up, and when Tracy shows him a photo of her murdered husband he admits he's never seen him before, confirming it wasn't Nate. But there's a twist when he identifies the man who contacted him as being Owen. This leaves Nate's loved ones sure Owen is the killer, and Robert starts to believe he may have been wrong after suspecting John was the true murderer. But the plot is turned on its head when Mackenzie finds a clue about a mystery something, linked to John, so what has he found? Given reports state Mack exposes John and ends up being killed as a result, this could well be the end of the character this coming week. It comes as he falls out big time with wife Charity Dingle amid her offering to be a surrogate for her granddaughter Sarah Sugden. With a pregnancy confirmed, things turn sour when Charity becomes distant and distracted. Mack is drowning his sorrows in the pub and after being taunted by Ross Barton, he admits it's been three years since he and Charity sadly lost their baby and he claims she hasn't remembered. The pair end up rowing, and he blurts out his issues about the surrogacy. Charity ends up kicking her husband out so is it over for the pair? Mack is also upset after Aaron confesses to him what's happened with Robert, but could he end up letting slip to John? Mack's sister Moira Dingle is in for more heartbreak next week too, when the deal she and new farmer Celia have been working on has fallen through. But is Joe Tate to blame after he vows to sabotage once more?
