Bengaluru Weather: Continuous rain triggers waterlogging and traffic chaos, IMD issues yellow alert
heavy rainfall in Bengaluru
has severely affected daily life, with waterlogged roads causing major inconvenience to commuters. Residents in low-lying areas are particularly worried about potential health risks due to stagnant water in their localities.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city will experience two more days of intense rain starting today, August 9. A yellow alert has been issued until August 10, which may be extended if the rain continues. The Times of India (TOI) reported that the downpour is the result of a strong revival of the southwest monsoon, leading to intense showers across the city.

'Mission Mausam': In Bid To Boost Weather Forecasting, IMD Floats Global Tenders For 10 Wind Profilers
The IMD will set up the wind profilers in 10 locations – Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mohanbari, Bhubaneswar, Calicut, and Thiruvananthapuram Building on its 'Mission Mausam' to sharpen weather forecasts, the IMD has floated a global tender to procure, install and commission 10 wind profiler systems at multiple sites across India. Wind profilers are like advanced doppler radars that provide the deepest coverage of the atmosphere, collecting data on wind speed, direction, and conditions at various levels above the ground. Each system is expected to last for at least 10 years. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified 10 locations for the installation – Amritsar, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, Mohanbari (Assam), Bhubaneswar, Calicut, and Thiruvananthapuram spanning the length and breadth of the country. Once installed, these wind profilers will significantly boost India's atmospheric observation network, improving weather forecasting and climate monitoring capabilities nationwide. The data will also be useful for airline planning and detection of turbulence during flight. These typically work by transmitting electromagnetic waves along the device's antenna systems. In its pre-bid security requirements, the tender document – accessed by News18, mandates pre-dispatch inspections, adherence to technical specifications, and compliance with the Centre's 'Make in India' policy. While the deal is open to both Indian and foreign manufacturers, preference will be given to local suppliers, micro and small enterprises as well as startups. A pre-bid conference will be held at the IMD headquarters in New Delhi, with bid submissions to be made exclusively via the government's e-procurement portals. WHAT IS THE RS 2,000-CRORE 'MISSION MAUSAM'? Last September, the central government launched the Rs 2,000 crore 'Mission Mausam' to make India 'weather ready' and 'climate smart' in wake of increasing extreme events, which have made tropical weather far more erratic and harder to predict. As part of the project, the IMD also outlined plans to add vertical wind profiles and radiometers at 15 locations, as well as increase the number of radiosondes from the existing 54. These instruments provide day and night data for wind direction, temperature, and humidity up to an altitude of 12 km, every 15 minutes. According to IMD director-general Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra, the mission will improve weather forecasting in cities and have better spatial resolution than the existing 12 km. 'This will also enable IMD to issue Nowcast warnings for rains an hour in advance – up from three hours at present," Mohapatra said. With wildfires out of control in Canada, authorities urge creation of National Wildfire Agency
Canada is battling one of its most intense and prolonged wildfire seasons on record, with over 7.3 million hectares scorched nationwide. As wildfires rage from coast to coast, experts and officials are urgently calling for the establishment of a national wildfire agency to better coordinate resources and response efforts. Ken McMullen, president of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs , told CTV News that wildfire seasons have only worsened in recent years. 'The benefit of a national administration is really around coordination and the reallocation of resources all across Canada in times when they need it the most,' he said. McMullen emphasized the need for a federal body that allows fire chiefs to have a direct role in shaping fire-related policy and managing resources efficiently. The fire threatens to reach communities like Ochre Pit Cove, with reports of multiple structures impacted, though officials are still verifying the full extent of the damage. Meanwhile, in Ontario's Kawartha Lakes region, fire crews are battling a 27-hectare blaze in the Burnt River area, where downed trees from a recent ice storm have made conditions particularly hazardous. Live Events On the west coast, the BC Wildfire Service continues to fight the out-of-control Wesley Ridge wildfire on Vancouver Island, using night-vision helicopters and drones to monitor hotspots. Despite minimal overnight growth, hot and dry conditions persist, raising concerns of increased smoke for nearby communities. According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, there are currently more than 700 active wildfires across Canada. Many experts have described this year's wildfire season as the second-worst on record after 2023. Flannigan has long advocated for a national wildfire agency, distinct from the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs' calls, which would have the power and resources to rapidly deploy personnel and equipment anywhere in the country. While provinces and territories share responsibility for fire management and often assist one another, delays in deploying resources can cost precious time. For example, Quebec firefighters and aircraft have taken days to arrive in Alberta during recent fires, hampering effective containment efforts. In Newfoundland, despite assistance from New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario, some crucial assets have been delayed or canceled due to maintenance issues or commitments fighting fires elsewhere. Canada's Ministry of Emergency Management and Community Resilience acknowledged the challenges ahead in a statement, citing ongoing efforts to improve wildfire response through better coordination and resilience-building initiatives. McMullen added that while national coordination efforts exist, much of the wildfire battle begins locally, often stretching municipal firefighters who are increasingly relied upon to support wildland firefighting efforts.
