Many of the tariff increases stem from a package unveiled in April, which outlined that dozens of economies would face higher levies — rising above the existing 10 per cent rate — due to their trade surpluses with the United States. The implementation date for these duties, delayed twice already, is now set for Friday, August 1. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said her government was 'doing everything' it could to stop the tariffs and expressed willingness to speak with Trump personally to secure a deal. Trump told reporters on Friday that no agreement with Canada had been reached. Brazil Brazil is bracing for what could amount to a virtual trade embargo on its planes, grains and other exports if Trump's threatened 50 per cent tariff is enacted on August 1. Despite the fact that the US runs a trade surplus with Brazil — Latin America's largest economy — the country was not initially expected to be targeted under Trump's 'reciprocal' tariff plan. Himachal cabinet approves special relief package for disaster-hit families
Shimla: The council of ministers led-by chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday approved a special relief package for the monsoon disaster-affected families of Himachal Pradesh. Under the special package, the compensation amount of Rs 1.30 lakh for a completely damaged house was increased to Rs 7 lakh, and Rs 12,500 for a partially damaged house was enhanced to Rs 1 lakh. The compensation of Rs 10,000 earmarked for a damaged shop or a dhaba earlier was increased to Rs 1 lakh, while the assistance for a damaged cowshed has been increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. An aid of Rs 50,000 will be provided to a tenant for damage or loss of belongings, whereas the owner will receive Rs 70,000 for such loss. The state govt will grant Rs 55,000 for the loss of large milch animal instead of Rs 37,500 fixed earlier, while the compensation for the loss of goat, pig, sheep, and lamb was increased from Rs 4,000 to Rs 9,000 per animal. The relief package also includes Rs 25,000 as compensation for the fully damaged poly-houses and Rs 50,000 for desilting of houses. The cabinet also decided to amend the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Election Rules, 2015, to address procedural gaps and practical difficulties encountered during the municipal elections. It was also decided to allot land in favour of Himachal Pradesh Milkfed for the establishment of a milk processing plant at Mehandali in Rohru tehsil of Shimla district. Approval was also accorded to grant a 50% concession in motor vehicle tax for owners scrapping vehicles that fall under Pre-BIS, BS-I, and BS-II emission norms through a registered vehicle scrapping facility. The creation and filling of eight posts of various categories in the pain and palliative care cell under the department of radiotherapy at IGMC, Shimla, was also approved. The cabinet, meanwhile, condemned the incident of misbehaviour with the revenue minister Jagat Singh Negi and the disrespect shown towards the national flag by "anti-social elements" during his visit to the Seraj area of Mandi district last week.
