New Kumbakonam university to be named after M Karunanidhi
CHENNAI: CM MK Stalin on Thursday announced in the Assembly that a new university named after former CM M Karunanidhi will be established in Kumbakonam in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of education in the state.
Replying to a discussion on a special mention by leaders of all political parties, except the AIADMK and the BJP, on the need for a university in the name of Karunanidhi, the CM said. although several leaders were instrumental in establishing educational institutions that went on to gain pre-eminence, Karunanidhi's contributions were significant.
Stalin said in recognition of Karunanidhi's tireless efforts for the advancement of education, and for his role in formulating various initiatives towards education, a university will soon be established in Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district, which was the leader's native district. The former CM's birthplace, Thirukkuvalai, however, is now part of Nagapattinam district that was carved out of Thanjavur in 1991.
The government was already mulling such a move since Higher Education Minister Govi Chezhiaan said in March in Erode that the government was planning a new university in Karunanidhi's name in the district. Once established, this will be the 23rd state university. New state universities were last established in 2012. Though the DMK government passed a bill to form a new university for Siddha medicine, it is pending with the President for assent.
The CM said he was making the announcement in deference to the requests made by various leaders in the Assembly. The leaders reasoned that since universities have been functioning in the names of former CMs like K Kamaraj, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, it is only appropriate that a university be established in Karunanidhi's name.
PMK floor leader GK Mani said it was on his request that Karunanidhi formed the Muthukumaran Committee and later Samacheer Kalvi was introduced in the state based on the panel's recommendation.
Stating that he heard that the CM is hesitant to establish a university in his father's name, Mani said Stalin need not hesitate since a university in the name of Karunanidhi is eminently appropriate.
Leader of the House Duraimurugan recalled he was a syndicate member of the UoM when MG Ramachandran was the CM. At that time, when there was a move to confer honorary doctorate on MGR, Karunanidhi asked him to propose the idea in the syndicate and subsequently the doctorate was conferred.

'Baseless': EC insiders dismiss Rahul's claim on Maharashtra poll rigging
New Delhi: The political storm stirred by Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi over alleged irregularities in Maharashtra electoral rolls was dismissed as 'baseless' by an Election Commission source on Saturday. 'The Maharashtra electoral roll revision process was undertaken under the full glare of 1,03,727 Booth Level Agents appointed by the political parties, including 27,099 BLAs by the Indian National Congress (INC) themselves,' said an official source, claiming that there was no basis for the Congress leader to insinuate vitiation of the electoral process. According to the Election Commission's elaborate procedure on the updating of electoral rolls, any deletion and addition is done strictly as per the given framework under Article 324 of the Constitution and the provisions of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Registration of the Electors Rules, 1960 and the extant instructions issued by the Commission from time to time Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, in an article published in a national daily, alleged "match-fixing" by the BJP in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. His article ignited a political controversy, with opposition parties claiming that it exposes the alleged scale of electoral manipulation in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections and points to the Election Commission's "silence" on critical questions raised by the opposition alliance. Election Commission sources, however, disagreed with Rahul Gandhi's claim and questioned why no appeals were filed in case the allegations about manipulation carried any weight. After the finalisation of these electoral rolls during the Maharashtra elections, out of 9,77,90,752 electors, only 89 appeals were filed before the first appellate authority (District Magistrate) under Section 24(A) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, said a source. Only one appeal was preferred before the second appellate authority (Chief Electoral Officer) under Section 24(B) of the same Act, he said. To counter Rahul Gandhi's attack on alleged election rigging, BJP leader Amit Malviya on Saturday posted on social media a news clip headlined: 'Misleading', 'baseless', says EC, rejects Congress' claims on Maharashtra voter lists. The EC said there was no irregular pattern in voter deletions in the state and rule-based process was followed with transparency in preparation of the electoral rolls, according to the clip.

During a community event with the Indian diaspora in Berlin, Prasad highlighted India's remarkable progress in IT, space, and digital transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, contrasting it with Pakistan's repeated failures in wars while referring to the repeated incidents of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and the military's dominant role in the country's politics. "India and Pakistan were born the same day. Where are we in India, and where are they (Pakistan)? India has become a major global IT power in the world. India has become an emerging space power in the world. The startup movements here are now globally recognised. India has also become the second biggest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. We have brought digital transformation with equity and justice," Prasad said. "What Pakistan is doing is creating terror machines. How to create world-class terrorists under their (military) Generals. They attacked us four times and lost every time. We never attacked; they were the ones who always started the war. It is because they are under the control of Generals and not political leaders. Generals want conflict to keep themselves relevant, and terrorists are the instruments through which they execute. Wherever there is a terrorist, either he is a Pakistani or trained in Pakistan," he added. He emphasised India's economic achievements, including a 51 per cent share of global digital payments and its status as the second-largest mobile manufacturer, attributing this to PM Modi's 2014 vision of "IT+IT=IT" (Information Technology + India's Talent = India Tomorrow). "Prime Minister Narendra Modi used to say in 2014 that if he became the PM, he would make an India where IT+IT=IT, which means Information Technology + India's Talent = India Tomorrow. Centre deliberately denying funds to T.N., says TNCC president
The Union Government is deliberately denying funds to Tamil Nadu, said K. Selvaperunthagai, president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee here on Saturday. The Centre was acting in a partisan manner even in sanctioning disaster relief funds and all the funds are getting diverted to the BJP-ruled States. The Centre was resorting to the tactics of denying funds to opposition-ruled States and thereby diverting those funds to the BJP-ruled States, he said. Accusing the Centre of treating the non-BJP ruled States in a step-motherly manner, he said that be it GST or the ₹2,500 crore aid due to the State School Education Department, the Centre was acting with an intention.
