IND vs ENG: Mohammed Siraj, front and centre! With two Tests to go, can India protect him from burnout?

Manchester:
It seemed like a picnic environment when the Indian cricket team went to the Kent county ground for a practice session last Thursday. Music played in the dressing room and the players were largely left on their own to decide how they wanted to use the three hours at the ground.

'Burnout' was the last thing on the team management's mind.
, however, looked restless and had his 'game face' on at all times. Having just played three gruelling Tests, he was restricted from bowling in the nets. But he did pad up and had a longish session with the bat even as
and Akash Deep had light sessions in the gym.

While the talk about India's pace attack has largely revolved around Bumrah's workload, Siraj has now become the most important pacer for India on this tour.
Suddenly, the team management has to think about ways of preserving him in order to ensure Siraj is at his best in the next two Tests.
'Siraj is not someone who's going to shy away from the workload, so it makes it even more important for us to manage his workload and make sure that he's at least fit to give his best,' India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate had said after the session.
India's bowling coach
had earlier said that they have to literally take the ball out of Siraj's hands in practice sessions.
Curbing Siraj's enthusiasm was the greatest challenge for coaches both at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and in the Team India setup during the fast bowler's initial years.
Why Team India came to Manchester from London via train and walked in rain
There was an underlying concern over Siraj's form when the team for the England tour was picked. His poor returns on lively pitches in Australia seven months ago had raised alarm bells about India's pace resources, especially with
slowly fading away due to fitness issues.

That Siraj was still bowling like a third seamer was a big concern for the team management and selectors.
In England, however, Siraj has looked like a bowler who has put in a lot of thought into his preparation, besides being all heart. Former Team India strength and condition coach Soham Desai told TOI that Siraj had asked him to devise a workout programme even before the Australia tour since he wanted to go on pilgrimage to Mecca.
Siraj went for the pilgrimage just before the Champions Trophy.
'Siraj was very deflated after the Australia tour and after being dropped from the Champions Trophy squad. He came to India and bowled with all his heart in a Ranji Trophy match. It is always difficult to explain to him that he doesn't have to burn himself out. But even before we travelled to Australia, we discussed how many days he will be off training and designed a workout programme accordingly,' Desai said.
Lord's museum tour: Cricket's greatest artifacts and the stories behind them
Former India pacer Amit Bhandari, who is an assistant coach at Gujarat Titans, noticed that Siraj had been talking a lot about bowling with his fellow pacers like Prasidh Krishna and didn't only focus on bowling T20 lengths and variations during the IPL.
'He bowled long spells at nets. While he had to focus on the variations for the IPL, he generally bowled Test match lengths. Siraj and Prasidh were inseparable. They sat together in team buses and had all their meals together.
He was super focused on talking about bowling in general even with head coach Ashish Nehra,' Bhandari said.
Before the tour started, former India bowling coach Bharat Arun, who has been instrumental in discovering Siraj at Hyderabad in 2016, had told TOI that this England tour was an opportunity for Siraj to put his hand up and prove he could be the frontline bowler for India.
Poll
Do you think Mohammed Siraj is ready to lead India's pace attack?
Absolutely, he's proven himself. Not yet, he needs more experience. Maybe, depending on his performance. No, we need a more seasoned bowler.
'What kind of mindset he has is going to be vital.
He's pretty smart. Siraj is someone who can be a captain's delight, someone who will give his all. It's good to be aggressive, but controlling it is going to be key,' Arun had said.
Having turned 31 four months ago, Siraj's approach in the field suggests he is growing into the role of a senior bowler. He has not let his emotions get the better of him. Interestingly, his bowling average comes down to 23 from his career average 31 when Bumrah isn't playing.
Akash Deep had credited Siraj for his 10-wicket haul in the second Test, which India won in Bumrah's absence at Edgbaston. 'Siraj bhai keeps talking to me during the game. We discuss what's happening from each end and how we can plot a batsman's dismissal,' Akash Deep had said during the second Test.
Ryan ten Doeschate press conference: Updates on Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and Arshdeep Singh
'I think we take for granted how lucky we are to have someone like Siraj. I know he doesn't always have the returns that you expect from a fast bowler.
But in terms of heart, he's like a lion and whenever he has the ball in hand, you always feel like something's going to happen,' ten Doeschate had said on Thursday.
In England, Siraj has brought all his experience into play. It has been a long road for the caretakers of Indian cricket to prepare Siraj for the day when he can confidently lead an attack.
In 2017, Siraj was here in England with the India 'A' team followed by a tour of New Zealand four months later. At that time, then-India 'A' bowling coach
had devised a bowlingagainst-the-wind plan.
The sole objective was to keep players outside their comfort zones while in the field.
Abhay Sharma, who was the fielding coach with the India 'A' team, had once told TOI, 'When you first make it to the highest level, there will be senior bowlers in the team. Senior bowlers get the option to choose the ends. Siraj learnt how to bowl against the wind and to manage the workload while bowling against the wind all day.'
At Edgbaston, where he picked up 6/70 in the first innings on a placid pitch, Siraj stopped in his runup quite a few times.
He didn't lose the run-up. He actually chose to bowl into the blustery wind to give Akash Deep easier conditions to bowl.
With two matches remaining in the series, India will hope for Siraj to keep growing as a lead pacer irrespective of Bumrah's presence in the XI.
Akash Deep struggling with back niggle
Heavy rain greeted the Indian team when they arrived here in Manchester on Saturday. Trailing 1-2 in the series, the team management is working overtime to sort out the pace attack for the fourth Test match beginning on Wednesday.
It has emerged Akash Deep is nursing a back niggle. Earlier, Arshdeep Singh had split the webbing on his bowling hand during practice.
Akash Deep, it is learnt, has developed a sore back that has troubled him in the past. He struggled to get through the second innings at Lord's last week. He is still not certain to start in the fourth Test on Wednesday. The medical team is working hard to get him back in shape.

Gambhir snaps at England draw drama

Manchester, July 27 (UNI) India head coach Gautam Gambhir weighed in on England's visible frustration after Indian batsmen chose to continue batting despite a handshake being offered by Ben Stokes late on Day 5 of the drawn Old Trafford Test. Responding to the controversy, Gambhir said, 'If someone is batting on 90 and the other on 85, don't they deserve a hundred? Would England have walked off if one of their own was on 90? If someone has the opportunity to get their first Test century, you must allow him to take it. It's unfortunate they felt that way- I have nothing more to say. Both guys deserved their tons and thankfully, they got them.' This firm stance by the Indian camp underlines the grit and individual milestones that defined India's late resistance. When asked about changes in the XI, including Karun Nair missing out and Anshul Kamboj debuting, Gambhir clarified, 'We don't drop anyone. We pick the XI we feel can do the job. We felt a left-hander at No. 3 would help against this attack, and Sai Sudarshan did his job. Anshul was picked because his bowling suits overcast conditions, and he can bowl long spells.' In a broader comment on the game, Gambhir supported the idea of allowing substitutes in cases of clear, visible external injuries. 'Absolutely. If the umpires and match referee agree it's serious, there should be a rule for it. Especially in a tightly fought series like this — imagine playing with just 10. That would be unfair,' he said. On the decision to promote Washington Sundar to No. 5, Gambhir said, 'He was in good form. With Rishabh unavailable, it was an opportunity to slot him in at five. We always knew what form he was in. There's not even an inch of surprise about what he did today — and I believe this is just the start for him.' When asked about the No. 3 conundrum after Karun and Sai's rotation, Gambhir stressed that it's not about individual scores. 'We look at partnerships. If No. 3 contributes to a stand, he's done his job. Sai is a phenomenal talent. You can't judge players game by game. He's 23, on his first tour of England, and still managed a brilliant 50 and 60. We have to be patient — these boys are the future of Indian cricket,' he said. Gambhir reaffirmed his belief in results over narratives. 'You're asking someone who only believes in results. We're still 2-1 down in the series, but I believe we can level it 2-2. That would be a great achievement,' he stated. Speaking about captain Shubman Gill's rise, Gambhir said the dressing room never doubted his talent. 'Those who doubted him only talk about cricket, they don't understand it. Even if he hadn't performed, we knew the kind of quality he has,' he said. 'He's living up to his talent and expectation. And this narrative around captaincy pressure? You can't see any of that when he bats. He walks in as a batter, not a captain.' UNI BDN RKM

IND vs ENG 4th Test: Triple Sunday! Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja script Sundar escape

Shubman Gill (Getty Images) MANCHESTER: At Lord's a fortnight ago, when Mohammed Siraj was unfortunately bowled out in the last hour of the Test, Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten but was defeated by Ben Stokes and England's relentlessness. On Sunday at Old Trafford, he looked them in the eye and walked back to the dressing room triumphant, unbeaten, and a proud centurion, having secured a draw to stay alive in the series. At the other end was Washington Sundar , India's next-gen spin-bowling allrounder, getting his maiden century as the duo dragged India out of a hole to finish at the score of 425/4. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Jadeja and Washington Sundar, by scoring an unbeaten 107 off 185 and 101 off 206 respectively, batted out 55.2 overs for 203 runs on a pitch with distinct variable bounce and some sharp turn to follow up captain Shubman Gill 's exceptionally gritty 103 and KL Rahul's fighting 90. In doing so, they extracted every ounce of Stokes and England's energy to take the series into the last Test at the Oval next week with the scoreline reading 2-1. Stokes, who literally bowled with his bowling arm hanging from his right shoulder to rock India in the first 80 minutes of the day, went up to shake hands with Jadeja and Washington, having made peace with a draw with an hour left to play. Jadeja and Washington turned down the offer to comically complete their centuries with resigned Harry Brook and Joe Root tossing harmless deliveries to be hit to the boundaries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Up to 70% off | Shop Sale Libas Undo This generation of Indian cricketers' identity is their stomach for a fight, which was headlined by the draw they stole against Australia in Sydney 2021. This bunch of Indian cricketers, raised largely on the riches of T20 cricket, declared their appetite for success in Test cricket. It couldn't have been better for Indian cricket than their 25-year-old captain Gill, on his first assignment, leading the way with a hundred that will define him as a force in Test cricket. India stay alive, England frustrated after draw; handshake drama at Old Trafford and more The only false shot in the innings cost him his wicket when he poked at a wide delivery off Jofra Archer minutes before lunch. Jadeja's only blemish of the day came off the next ball, flashing at another wide delivery only for Joe Root to drop the catch at first slip. Jadeja has played many come-frombehind knocks for India before. Seldom did the results of those matches favour India. This Old Trafford innings will give him that new feeling of satisfaction. Washington has just put a stamp on his quiet effectiveness in crunch situations. There have been no Indian centurions at Old Trafford since Sachin Tendulkar's maiden Test century in 1990. India added three names to the honours board on Sunday. The 112th over of the innings, minutes before tea, was the defining moment for India, and a shift in momentum happened. Jadeja and Washington brought up their fifties in the same over off Stokes, dispatching him to opposite sides of the boundary. It also wiped out the 311-run deficit. An animated Stokes got engaged in verbal volleys. Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai The pitch and English attack both went flat. The two left-handers responded after tea by swatting away the English attack with consummate ease. Left-arm spinner Liam Dawson, Stokes' go-to man for the day, bowled 47 overs of mostly harmless left-arm spin for 0/95. England though started off well. Stokes, who didn't bowl on the fourth evening of the Test, swung into action immediately early on the fifth morning. Half an hour into the day, he got one to stay low and caught Rahul in front of the stumps. Every time he delivered the ball, he grunted like a tennis player playing the last game of the fifth set of a Grand Slam final. He was deservedly named player of the match for his efforts. R Ashwin rips into Ben Stokes: 'Your frustration, not our problem!' — Defends Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar century push

Ben Stokes speaking with Ravindra Jadeja during fourth Test in Manchester. (Getty Images) NEW DELHI: Drama and emotion collided in Manchester on Day 5 of the fourth Test as Ravichandran Ashwin came out strongly in support of Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar for choosing to bat on — and complete their centuries — after England skipper Ben Stokes offered to call it a draw with an hour to go. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! With India well and truly having saved the game after being 0/2 in the second innings, Jadeja (89*) and Sundar (80*) stood firm. But when Stokes approached the umpires and offered a handshake to end the match, the Indian pair refused — and stood their ground, quite literally. Poll Do you agree with Ashwin's defense of Jadeja and Sundar's decision to bat on? Yes, they earned their runs. No, they should have walked off. This irked the England captain, who sarcastically questioned whether they wanted to score hundreds against part-time bowler Harry Brook . Jadeja responded with his bat, dispatching Brook for a six to bring up his century. Gautam Gambhir fiery press conference: Slams critics, big update on Jasprit Bumrah, Karun vs Sai Later, Ashwin — speaking on his YouTube channel — tore into the criticism directed at the Indian batters. "Have you heard the term double standards? They played your bowlers all day, batted you out, and suddenly when they're nearing hundreds, you want to walk off? Why should they?!" Ashwin fumed. "You ask, 'You want to make a hundred against Harry?' Not Brook, brother. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo He has to make a hundred. Bring any bowler — they didn't object. It was your call to bring Brook, not ours!" he added, defending the pair's right to play on. Ashwin also laid bare what he believed was the motive behind the early handshake offer: "There were two reasons — one, you didn't want to tire your bowlers. Fine. Second, you were frustrated, and thought 'If I'm not happy, you shouldn't be either.' That's not how cricket works." Ben Stokes press conference: On handshake controversy, India fightback, his own fitness Ashwin argued that if he were captain, he would've played the full quota of overs. "These are Test runs. A century is earned, not gifted. Washington deserved it. Jadeja deserved it. Period." India and England eventually shook hands after both batters got their milestones, with the series poised 2-1, in the hosts' favour, heading into the Oval finale.
