John Abraham Says He's Apolitical But Open To Political Scripts Ahead Of Tehran

John Abraham, known for balancing commercial hits with films on political issues, discusses his new film Tehran, set during the Russia-Ukraine war.
John Abraham, known for balancing commercial blockbusters with films on political and national issues, says he does not engage in politics personally but is open to taking on political stories in his work. Ahead of the release of his next film Tehran on August 14, 2025, the actor spoke about why such scripts appeal to him and reflected on his earlier projects like Madras Cafe. The upcoming action-thriller, inspired by true events and set during the Russia–Ukraine war, will premiere directly on ZEE5.
In a recent conversation with India Today, Abraham recounted a formative childhood moment that left a lasting impression on him. 'With Madras Cafe… I felt a drop of waterfall on my face. When I was young, and I opened my eyes, and I saw my mom drawing the curtains, and I asked her in Gujarati because my mom's Irani, Parsi… and I asked her, I said, 'Mummy, Suthayu, what happened?' And she said, 'Rajiv Gandhi was killed last night.' And when I saw the images of him his lotus shoes, his white kurta, and his face… it impacted me somewhere, and I didn't understand why my family was crying and mourning over the loss of Rajiv Gandhi."
He credited filmmaker Shoojit Sircar for bringing Madras Cafe to life, recalling that it was originally set to be his debut production before Vicky Donor took the lead. 'And of course, all credit to Shoojit Sircar to make such a beautiful film, and it just came together for us at that point of time. And Madras Cafe was the first film that I was gonna make in my production… Vicky Donor happened in the midst of that, and we let that start first."
Willing to take risks
Discussing his approach to politically sensitive projects, Abraham said he takes on such work with full awareness of the risks involved. 'I know what I am getting into with my eyes open, even with Tehran, I knew what I was getting into with my eyes open. But then, in management, there is a saying, 'The higher the risk, the greater the profit.' Take the risk, get a voice, have a voice, speak about what you want to speak, and be responsible. I think people see it, people are fair, and people get it, you know."
The world of Tehran
Produced by Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films and directed by Arun Gopalan, Tehran stars Abraham alongside Manushi Chhillar. The screenplay, written by Ritesh Shah and Ashish Prakash Verma, explores the complex geopolitical dynamics involving Russia, Ukraine, China, Iran, and Palestine. Abraham has described it as a 'stunning" and 'gripping" film that blends action with layered global themes.
Speaking to BollywoodLife earlier, John Abraham had said, 'I have Tehran next, it is produced by Dinesh Vijan (Maddock Films). I don't know when it's going to release but we are ready with the film. That has little more action and is hopefully gripping and I hope people take my word for it this time at least."
Upcoming projects
Beyond Tehran, Abraham's upcoming projects include Rohit Shetty's biopic on former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria, the superhero film Munkeeman, a potential Pathaan spin-off focused on his character Jim, and Garam Masala 2.

26th India-Russia Commission: EAM Jaishankar to visit Moscow, meet Sergey Lavrov, says MEA; to discuss trade amid US tariffs

File photo NEW DELHI: External affairs minister S Jaishankar is set to visit Moscow for the 26th India-Russia Commission and meet his counterpart Sergey Lavrov, the ministry of external affairs said on Thursday. The two leaders are expected to discuss trade amid additional tariffs being faced by India because of its continuous purchase of Russian oil. "EAM Dr S Jaishankar is expected to visit Moscow for the 26th session of the India-Russia intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, technological and cultural cooperation. This is to happen later this month. We will share with you further updates at the appropriate time," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. Lavrov on Wednesday informed that the two leaders would discuss the "key issues on our bilateral agenda, as well as key aspects of cooperation within international frameworks." This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephonic conversation and reaffirmed the "commitment to further deepen the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership." Moreover, PM Modi also had a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy where the two leaders talked about "sanctions against Russia" and New Delhi's oil purchases. "We also talked in detail about sanctions against Russia. I noted that it is necessary to restrict the export of Russian energy resources, especially oil, to reduce its potential and ability to finance the continuation of this war. It is important that now every leader who has significant leverage over Russia sends appropriate signals to Moscow," Zelenskyy said.

Trump Vows To ‘Get Ukraine War Stopped' Ahead Of Meeting With Putin In Alaska

Last Updated: US President Trump will meet Russian President Putin in Alaska to discuss ending the Russia-Ukraine war. The summit will be held at a military base. Ahead of his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, US President Donald Trump on Thursday vowed to end the Russia-Ukraine war, saying that he inherited this from Joe Biden, but he's going to get it stopped. This will be the first in-person meeting between Trump and Putin since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. 'We're going to get it stopped. I inherited this from Joe Biden, but we're going to get it stopped," the US President said. . @POTUS on his 'mindset" ahead of tomorrow's meeting with President Putin: 'We're going to get it stopped. I inherited this from Joe Biden, but we're going to get it stopped." — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) August 14, 2025 According to CNN, Trump and Putin will hold a joint press conference following their upcoming meeting in Alaska. The much-awaited meeting is scheduled to take place on Friday. During the Alaska summit, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin will hold talks over ending the war in Ukraine. Interestingly, the high-stakes meeting will take place at a military base in Alaska that was crucial to countering the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War and still plays a role today, news agency AP reported, citing a White House official. Trump has said that a peace deal might include swapping land between Russia and Ukraine. He also suggested that Zelenskyy and Putin could meet next — or that he might meet with both of them. 'There's a very good chance that we're going to have a second meeting, which will be more productive than the first, because the first is I'm going to find out where we are and what we're doing," AP quoted Trump as saying on Wednesday. 'It's going to be a very important meeting, but it's setting the table for the second meeting," he added. The BBC reports that Putin has stated Russia would agree to a ceasefire if the Ukrainian government withdrew from the four partially Russian-controlled regions — Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia. He also insisted that Ukraine must formally abandon its bid to join the NATO military alliance, the outlet added. Meanwhile, Zelensky has expressed deep concerns over being excluded from the upcoming summit, warning that any peace deal excluding Kyiv will lead to dead solutions. Officials from Ukraine and Europe fear that the one-on-one meeting they will not take part in could lead to a result favouring Russian goals. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. These include providing Putin with an opportunity to access natural resources in the Bering Strait between Alaska and the eastern coast of Russia, as well as the rare earth minerals in the Ukrainian territories that Moscow partially controls, as per a report by Newsweek.
