Mamata launches 'Shramshree' scheme: ₹5K aid for returning migrants
Banerjee, while addressing the media on Monday, said, "Due to speaking Bengali, other states declared them criminals. Twenty-two lakh migrant workers from West Bengal are working in other states. Today, they are suffering for speaking Bengali."
Under the Shramshree scheme, each returning worker will receive ₹5,000 per month for a year or until they secure new employment in Bengal.
She said, "A new scheme for migrant workers, Shramshree, will soon start in West Bengal. Migrant workers will return to Bengal, the Government will provide them ₹5000 for a year, as financial help. This scheme will start under the Labour department...This is only for Bengali migrant workers."
Meanwhile, The West Bengal government has ordered the screening of at least one Bengali film each in all the cinema halls and every screen in multiplexes across the state on a regular basis.
In an order issued by the state government's Information and Cultural Affairs Department, the films are to be screened during the prime time, i.e., between 3 pm to 9 pm.
"After careful consideration of all aspects of the matter, and in exercise of the power conferred by sub-section (3) of section 5 of the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1954, the Governor is hereby pleased to issue the following direction to all licensees of the State," the notification read.
It further stated that every cinema hall and all screens in multiplexes in West Bengal must mandatorily have 365 prime time shows/screenings of Bengali films throughout the year, with at least one Bengali show per day for the 365 days.
It emphasised that the prime time shows must be held only between 3 pm and 9 pm.
"Necessary amendment to the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation of Public Exhibitions) Rules, 1956 will be made in due course. This order shall come into immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders," it added.
The move has been taken in the wake of growing pan-India releases in India, with the West Bengal government aiming to increase the visibility of regional cinema.
Prior to this, the government had taken another move by streamlining the process of setting up mini-cinema halls in the state to focus on Bengali films and content.
"Over the recent past, we are in receipt of a few proposals for setting up of infrastructure for screening of mini-cinema (with particular focus on Bengali cinema and content). This has the potential to work as a catalyst for the development of the Bengali film industry, and the business model suggests that it might also benefit local businesses to grow further," the letter read from the office of the Chief Secretary.
The changes are believed to have the potential to boost local culture and help small businesses grow.

Bombay high court dismisses election petition against BJP legislator R Tamil Selvan
MUMBAI: Observing that the petition comprised vague and generic pleadings, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday dismissed an election petition filed against the victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Captain R Tamil Selvan. He won from the Sion-Koliwada constituency in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. Selvan petitioned the HC for the dismissal of the petition filed by Ganesh Kumar Yadav, the Indian National Congress (INC) candidate who emerged with the second-highest votes. Yadav earlier this year filed the election petition and, through his counsel Premlal Krishnan, challenged Selvan's election on grounds of non-compliance with certain rules and provisions, including those governing valid nominations under Section 33 of the Representation of People (RP) Act. Justice Milind Jadhav, who pronounced the judgment on Tuesday, said, 'It is, however, prima facie seen that the Election Petition comprises vague and generic pleadings and there is a complete absence of material facts.' Krishnan argued that averments in the petition were enough to lay the foundation for the challenge. Justice Jadhav noted that Krishnan 'fairly argued that though what Petitioner will prove in evidence is not specifically in so many words stated in the Election Petition … Petitioner should be allowed to prove the same in trial. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo ' Justice Jadhav, after hearing senior counsel Veerendra Tulzapurkar, who represented Selvan, said he did not subscribe to Krishnan's submission. The HC said, 'It is seen that on scrutiny, the Returning Officer has not found any ambiguity or mistake, much less, non-disclosure or falsehood which can be deemed as suppression. It is in this context that when the Election Petitioner approaches the Court, he has to make a concise material statement of facts with all details in the Petition itself at the threshold. The Petitioner cannot improve his case in further pleadings, which is the attempt of Petitioner before me. ' Once Selvan's nomination was held to be valid, it is deemed accepted and can only be rejected at the time of scrutiny. When the Returning Officer on scrutiny endorses each nomination, the nomination is considered valid, the HC held. The HC agreed with Tulzapurkar's submissions seeking dismissal of the EP as it does not contain a concise statement of material facts as mandated under Section 83(1)(a) of the RP Act. PM Modi degree row: Delhi HC defers verdict on DU plea against CIC order after...
(File) PM Modi degree row: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday deferred pronouncement of its verdict on Delhi University's plea challenging a CIC order directing disclosure of information on the bachelor's degree of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Justice Sachin Datta, who was scheduled to pass the judgment at around 2.30 pm, did not preside today. is The verdict is likely to be pronounced on August 25. At the time of arguments, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared for DU, argued the CIC order deserved to be set aside for the 'right to privacy' superseded the 'right to know'. Mehta, however, had said the university was willing to show to the court its record pertaining to Modi's degree but cannot disclose the same for 'scrutiny by strangers' under the RTI law. The court has reserved its judgement on other similar petitions which would also be pronounced. Following an RTI application by one Neeraj, the Central Information Commission (CIC) on December 21, 2016, allowed inspection of records of all students who cleared the BA exam in 1978 — the year Prime Minister Modi also passed it. The high court stayed the CIC order on January 23, 2017. DU challenged the CIC order on the ground that it held the information of students in a fiduciary capacity and 'mere curiosity' in the absence of public interest did not entitle anyone to seek private information under the RTI law. Earlier, the counsel for the RTI applicants had defended the CIC's order on the ground that the Right to Information (RTI) Act provided for disclosure of the prime minister's educational information in greater public good.
