3 Polish doctors convicted in 2021 death of pregnant woman

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Three Polish doctors were convicted for their roles in the 2021 death of a 30-year-old pregnant woman that sparked massive protests, Polish news agency PAP reported.
The death from sepsis of the woman known as Iza at a hospital in southern Poland in her 22nd week of pregnancy led to huge street protests against the country's restrictive anti-abortion law. Activists blamed her death on doctors' choice to 'wait and see' rather than immediately carry out an abortion because of the Poland's near-ban on the procedure.
Two of the doctors were sentenced to more than a year in prison without parole and the third received a two-year suspended sentence, PAP reported Thursday. They can appeal the decision.
The charges, filed in 2022, were of exposing the patient to the danger of loss of life. Two of the doctors also were charged with unintentionally causing the patient's death.
'As a result of the team's activity and the failure to act, the patient has died,' Agnieszka Wichary, spokesperson for the prosecutors' office in Katowice, said in a statement at the time.
Poland, a mostly Catholic country, passed a strict law in 1993 that banned abortions except when the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest, when the woman's life or health is at risk, or when the fetus had congenital deformities.
But the Constitutional Tribunal, under the influence of Poland's conservative ruling party, ruled in 2020 that abortions for congenital defects were not constitutional, even if the fetus has no chance of survival. That sparked huge street protests.
Activists said Iza was the first to die from the further tightening of the restrictive law. The woman left behind a husband and a daughter.
In practice, activists say, many women have abortions on their own with pills obtained from abroad.

Up to 85,000 new mothers in England may have been impacted by postnatal depression last year, according to new analysis. The illness can be 'truly devastating' when left untreated, potentially leading to the 'unnecessary' deaths of women and sometimes their babies, the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) warned. Postnatal depression is a condition that can develop after childbirth. While many women may feel tearful or anxious after giving birth, this does not usually last for more than two weeks. Persistent feelings of sadness, low mood, a lack of interest in things and a lack of energy could indicate postnatal depression. Other symptoms can include trouble sleeping, withdrawing from other people, problems concentrating and scary thoughts, such as thinking about hurting your baby. Using Office for National Statistics data which shows there were 567,708 live births in 2024, RCPsych estimates between 56,000 to 85,000 mothers – or between 10% to 15% – may have experienced postnatal depression. The college highlights that maternal suicide is the leading cause of death in women from six weeks to a year after birth and also said prenatal mental illness – conditions that develop during pregnancy – can put unborn babies at risk of premature birth or low birth weight. RCPsych is urging women and their partners to seek support for these treatable conditions. Dr Trudi Seneviratne, consultant perinatal psychiatrist and immediate past RCPsych registrar, said: 'Women can experience an enormous amount of change, including increased stress factors when they become pregnant, and this may negatively affect their mental health. 'Postnatal depression is far more common than many people realise and can have a devastating impact on mothers, babies and families if left untreated.' Treatment for postnatal depression can include talking therapies or antidepressants. Dr Seneviratne stressed that medics are trained to ensure medication is safe to take when pregnant or breastfeeding, and warned that the risks of untreated depression outweigh the risk of antidepressants. 'Mothers who receive talking therapy and other forms of care from mental health services will often be able to recover, but some might be so unwell that they need medication, including antidepressants,' she said. 'Medication helps save lives. The dangers of untreated depression far outweigh the risks of antidepressants. 'The unnecessary deaths of mothers and sometimes their babies that result from failure to treat these conditions are truly devastating. 'Doctors are trained to ensure that the medication they prescribe is as safe as possible to take while pregnant or breastfeeding. Medication should be reviewed regularly, and any side effects closely monitored. 'For children to thrive, they need as good a start in life as possible, and this is important not only for the child and their mother but also communities and society as well. We all have a role to play in ensuring mothers and their partners feel confident seeking support when they need it.'

I went to a medical clinic in Portugal — thousands of miles from my NYC home. I saved $500 and found an answer for my back pain.

I visited a Lisbon longevity clinic to address persistent injuries and lower back pain. The clinic offers body scans and osteopathy, revealing insights into muscle imbalances. These tests are costly in the US, but cost a fraction of the price in Portugal. I'm OK with aging — it's a privilege to get older! I don't feel the need to invest in expensive supplements to subtract 15 years from my biological age or get a vampire facial to look a few years younger. At the same time, I'm a runner, trying to learn more about my body. That's why I ended up at a longevity clinic in Lisbon, about 3,400 miles from my home in New York City. I'd spent most of 2024 managing a few injuries. First, a grade 2 MCL tear in my left knee, after dancing in shoes that couldn't quite handle my moves. After I was cleared to run, I went a little too hard, leading to tendonitis in the Achilles and peroneal tendons of my right foot. I did everything you're supposed to do: physical therapy, low-impact cardio, and strength training. Still, I felt frustrated and stagnant. Without my regular workout routine, I felt my muscles stiffen everywhere in my body, reviving a pain I get in my lower back when I'm not active. I wanted to get to the bottom of these incessant, random aches. While staying in Portugal earlier this year, a friend, who's a physician, recommended I check out MetaClinic, a wellness center in the heart of Lisbon. It's marketed as a one-stop shop for wellness, offering everything from hormonal health assessments to body composition and metabolic rate testing. While my sports doctors and physical therapists in New York City are phenomenal, it often felt like we were treating each issue separately rather than exploring how one might be leading to another. I was drawn to MetaClinic's mission of connecting the dots within the body. As a freelance journalist with basic marketplace health insurance, I gained more from the experience than I could have imagined for a fraction of the cost in the US. And one appointment, which I decided to tack on at the last minute, may have helped identify the cause of my years-long back pain. I got 2 body scans to measure my muscles, body fat, and metabolism I began with two tests commonly offered at private longevity clinics, a new kind wellness center that is booming worldwide. First, I did the DEXA scan, a low-dose X-ray that measures your bone density, muscle mass distribution, and body fat percentage. Second, the indirect calorimetry test, a breathing assessment that measures your resting metabolic rate (or, the amount of calories you burn throughout your waking day). Together, these cost me €190 (or $224). While these tests are available in the US, I'd never considered them since they would cost up to $1,200. According to the clinic's website, these scans would provide a vivid picture of how my body works. As a health journalist, I was a little skeptical about how much I could learn from five- to 15-minute tests. "These are essential factors for health," Dr. Andrea Maier, one of the world's leading longevity researchers who offers these tests at her clinic in Singapore, told me. However, she echoed my concern. These scans only give a small glimpse into the bigger picture of what's going on with my body, she said. You need to take the findings with a grain of salt, and combine them with other tests — measuring your VO2 max and studying your diet, for example. I wanted to try it because, according to research, muscle mass distribution can tell you a lot about a body — present and future — from heart health to disease risk. I was curious to see if my year of reduced physical activity had affected my health. The DEXA scan was a pleasant experience. After lying still on a table for about 10 minutes while my entire body was scanned inch by inch, I got my results. Thankfully, I learned I had minimal visceral adipose tissue (a type of harmful fat), which is linked to lower inflammation and a lower risk of age-related diseases. I felt relieved! However, my total body fat content was on the high end of the normal range, at 35.8%. My technician at MetaClinic said this range was completely fine, but Maier advised I should aim to reduce it and increase my muscle mass. That didn't surprise me, given I hadn't been strength training at all, as I was afraid of aggravating my injuries while abroad. The calorimetry test was not so simple. My technician said, "It's time to wrap you like a present," before she put a dome-like helmet over my head and wrapped my entire body in plastic. The goal of this 15-minute test is to measure how much energy (calories) your body burns at rest, but not when it's asleep. It measures the oxygen you breathe in and the carbon dioxide you exhale, to see how efficiently your body is using oxygen to generate energy. My results indicated that I burn, on average, about 1,400 kcal/day by just existing. (Research suggests this is in line with the average.) For anyone looking to better understand how their body is changing over time, these tests can be a good starting point, but it doesn't tell you much in a vacuum. The osteopath identified a source of back pain I'd never considered At the last minute, I decided to meet with the clinic's osteopath, a licensed doctor whose medical practice looks at the whole person in a holistic sense. I hadn't tried this area of medicine before. In New York City, one appointment with a DO (doctor of osteopathic medicine) could cost anywhere from $135-$400 out of pocket for one appointment. Here, it cost me €60 ($70). Looking at me, she said she could tell I'd been doing calf raises on my right foot because that calf was notably bigger than my left. To achieve muscle balance between my left and right legs, she said I should be doing my physical therapy exercises on my healthy leg, too, not just on the injured side. Then she assessed my lower back pain. While I was lying face down on the table, she started at my feet and worked her way up. She found that my hamstrings were unusually tight. Normally, when I have back pain, my physical therapists target my glutes — right beneath the joint where I feel tightness. I hadn't considered that my pain could be stemming from my hamstring, and that it could be the result of my left foot taking on more of the load when walking to compensate for the discomfort in my right heel. When I got back to New York City, I started working out biweekly with a friend who's a personal trainer to help address these muscle imbalances. Four months in, I can't believe how much better both my back and right heel are feeling. Why Americans fly abroad for longevity tests In the US, these tests don't feel affordable. I'm glad I seized this opportunity while working in Lisbon for two months through the winter. In total, I paid just $224 for all three of these assessments without health insurance. In the US this collection of tests would have set me back between $400 and $1,200, depending on insurance coverage. While all of the information I got from my day at MetaClinic may just be a "starting point," I found it helped me get a fresh perspective on how to manage discomfort on both sides of my body. European Commission approves Roche's Itovebi for people with ER-positive, HER2-negative, advanced breast cancer with a PIK3CA mutation

Approval based on INAVO120 data showing the Itovebi™ (inavolisib)-based regimen more than doubled progression-free survival compared with palbociclib and fulvestrant alone1 Up to 40% of ER-positive breast cancers have a PIK3CA mutation and are associated with poor prognosis; this approval helps address an urgent unmet need2-4 Itovebi is the first PI3K-targeted therapy to significantly extend survival, reinforcing the need for biomarker testing at diagnosis5 Basel, 23 July 2025 - Roche (SIX: RO, ROG; OTCQX: RHHBY) announced today that the European Commission has approved Itovebi™ (inavolisib), in combination with palbociclib (Ibrance®) and fulvestrant, for the treatment of adult patients with PIK3CA-mutated, oestrogen receptor (ER)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative, locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, following recurrence on or within 12 months of completing adjuvant endocrine treatment. 'Itovebi is the first treatment of its kind to improve survival outcomes for those living with PIK3CA-mutated, ER-positive advanced breast cancer,' said Levi Garraway, MD, PhD, Roche's Chief Medical Officer and Head of Global Product Development. 'Therefore, the Itovebi-based regimen may help address an important unmet need for people with this subtype of breast cancer.' The approval is based on results from the phase III INAVO120 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in October 2024, which showed a 57% reduction in the risk of disease worsening or death (progression-free survival [PFS]) with the Itovebi-based regimen compared with palbociclib and fulvestrant alone (15.0 months vs. 7.3 months; hazard ratio [HR]=0.43; 95% CI: 0.32-0.59, p<0.001) in the first-line setting.1 The PFS benefit was consistent across all pre-specified subgroups and the Itovebi-based regimen was well tolerated, with no new safety signals observed.1 These results were reinforced by the INAVO120 final overall survival analysis that showed the Itovebi-based regimen reduced the risk of death by 33% (stratified HR=0.67; 95% CI: 0.48–0.94, p-value=0.0190 [boundary=0.0469]).5 Additionally, the treatment regimen substantially delayed the time to chemotherapy by approximately two years compared with palbociclib and fulvestrant alone (stratified HR=0.43; 95% CI: 0.30-0.60).5 These data were presented at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting and published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2025. Beyond INAVO120, Itovebi is currently being investigated in three company-sponsored phase III studies (INAVO121, INAVO122, INAVO123), all in PIK3CA-mutated, locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in various combinations.6-8 We are exploring additional studies in breast cancer and other tumour types with the hope of providing the benefit of this targeted therapy to more people with PIK3CA mutations. About Itovebi TM (inavolisib)Itovebi is an oral, targeted treatment that has been shown to provide well-tolerated and durable disease control in people with PIK3CA-mutated, hormone receptor (HR)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative, advanced breast cancer, who often have a poor prognosis and are in urgent need of new treatment options.1,4,9 Itovebi has been designed to help minimise the overall burden and toxicity of treatment and is differentiated from other PI3K inhibitors due to its high potency and specificity for the PI3K alpha isoform versus other isoforms, and unique mechanism of action that facilitates the degradation of mutated PI3K alpha.10,11 In addition to the European Commission's approval, the Itovebi-based regimen is also approved for the treatment of adults with endocrine-resistant, PIK3CA-mutated, HR-positive, HER2-negative, locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in the United States, Switzerland, Canada, Australia, United Arab Emirates, China and Taiwan, with data from INAVO120 under review with several other global health authorities. About the INAVO120 studyThe INAVO120 study [NCT04191499] is a phase III, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluating the efficacy and safety of Itovebi™ (inavolisib) in combination with palbociclib and fulvestrant versus placebo plus palbociclib and fulvestrant in people with PIK3CA-mutated, hormone receptor (HR)-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative, locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer whose disease progressed during treatment or within 12 months of completing adjuvant endocrine therapy and who have not received prior systemic therapy for metastatic disease.12 The study included 325 patients, who were randomly assigned to either the investigational or control treatment arm.12 The primary endpoint is progression-free survival, as assessed by investigators, defined as the time from randomisation in the clinical trial to the time when the disease progresses, or a patient dies from any cause.12 Secondary endpoints include overall survival, objective response rate, and clinical benefit rate.12 Beyond INAVO120, Itovebi is currently being investigated in three company-sponsored phase III clinical studies in PIK3CA-mutated locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in various combinations: in combination with fulvestrant versus alpelisib plus fulvestrant in HR-positive/HER2-negative breast cancer post cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6) inhibitor and endocrine combination therapy (INAVO121; NCT05646862).6 in combination with pertuzumab plus trastuzumab for subcutaneous injection (SC) versus pertuzumab plus trastuzumab for SC and optional physician's choice of endocrine therapy as a maintenance treatment in HER2-positive disease (INAVO122; NCT05894239).7 in combination with CDK4/6 inhibitor and letrozole versus placebo plus a CDK4/6 inhibitor and letrozole in the first-line setting in PIK3CA-mutated HR-positive/HER2-negative, endocrine-sensitive breast cancer (INAVO123; NCT06790693).8 About oestrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancerER-positive is a subtype of hormone receptor (HR)-positive breast cancer, the most prevalent type of all breast cancers, accounting for approximately 70% of cases.13,14 A defining feature of ER-positive breast cancer is that its tumour cells have receptors that attach to oestrogen, which can contribute to tumour growth.15 People diagnosed with ER-positive and HR-positive metastatic breast cancer often face the risk of disease progression and treatment side effects, creating a need for additional treatment options.14,16,17 The PI3K signalling pathway is commonly dysregulated in HR-positive breast cancer, often due to activating PIK3CA mutations, which have been identified as a potential mechanism of intrinsic resistance to standard of care endocrine therapy in combination with cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 inhibitors.9 About Roche in breast cancerRoche has been advancing breast cancer research for more than 30 years with the goal ofhelping as many people with the disease as possible.
