Alexander Isak sent home from Celtic game as Eddie Howe swoons over the brilliance of Brendan
Eddie Howe lavished praise on Celtic and insisted Brendan Rodgers side look Champions League ready.
League Cup champions Newcastle are preparing for a return to the top tier of European football but the Hoops face a play-off next month to secure their spot back at the top table. However, after watching his side concede four without reply at Parkhead, Howe admitted his side were second best.
The Magpies boss, who looked set to replace Neil Lennon as Celtic boss four years ago only to pul out when he couldn't get his backroom team in place, said: 'We've had an intense week and we looked a little bit jaded. But it was great for our preparation. Celtic were way ahead of us fitness-wise and sharpness-wise.
'It was a great atmosphere and stadium to play in. It was a good standard of football for so early in pre-season. Whoever Celtic draw in the Champions League will be in for some tough games.'
Liverpool-linked Alexander Isak travelled then was sent home. But Howe insists there's been no approach for the £150m-rated Sweden striker.
He said: "He travelled to Glasgow with us but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him. The last thing he wanted was to be sat in the stand watching - that wasn't fair to him. But I'm confident he will be a Newcastle player come the end of the window."

Celtic and Rangers make huge Premiership fixture postponement decision for Champions League play offs
The matchweek three schedule has been confirmed but it comes with two huge caveats Hibs and Rangers have seen requests granted to postpone their matchweek three fixtures if they progress in Europe as part of a new policy to aid our clubs in their Euro campaigns. But Celtic have decided against having their game with Livingston, sandwiched in between their Champions League playoff with either Slovan Bratislava or Kairat Almaty, pushed back. The SPFL finalised the schedule for the weekend of August 23/24, with St Mirren vs Rangers moved to the Sunday noon slot for Sky coverage, after Falkirk vs Hibs was previously picked up for the Saturday teatime game on Premier Sports. But it comes with the caveat that both of those games will be postponed until later in the season should the clubs involved take part in European action that week. Rangers face Viktoria Plzen at Ibrox tonight before a second leg in the Czech Republic next week and, should they progress, they will be involved in playoffs on August 19/20 and August 26/27 – either side of their scheduled clash with St Mirren. The same goes for Hibs who, if they can make it past Partizan Belgrade, will face Legia Warsaw or AEK Larnaca on August 21 and August 28. Celtic are also in action against Livingston on Saturday August 23 with Champions League playoffs either side but have not requested a postponement under the new policy. A league statement reads: "The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) can today provide a further update on match arrangements for round three of the William Hill Premiership. "As previously confirmed, Dundee United v Aberdeen on Saturday August 23 has been postponed following a request by Aberdeen, who will be participating in the Europa League play-offs. "The new policy, which allows clubs involved in UEFA play-off matches to postpone their round three fixtures, was approved by the SPFL Board in April to support clubs aiming to reach the league phase of UEFA competitions. "Falkirk v Hibernian was selected by Premier Sports for live broadcast on Saturday August 23, kick-off 5.45pm, but, as earlier announced, following a request from Hibernian will also be postponed if they overcome FK Partizan to reach the Conference League play-off round. "St Mirren v Rangers has been selected for live coverage on Sky Sports on Sunday August 24, kick-off 12 noon, but following a request from Rangers will be postponed if they reach the play-off round of the Champions League. "Following discussions with Celtic, their home match versus Livingston remains scheduled for 3.00pm on Saturday August 23, alongside Hearts v Motherwell and Kilmarnock v Dundee. "New dates for postponed round three matches will be announced following publication of the UEFA league phase fixtures at the end of August." Jorge Costa dead aged 53 as tributes pour in for Porto legend and Jose Mourinho's Champions League winning captain
Former defender Costa has died at the age of 53 after suffering a cardiac arrest at the club's training ground in Olival, according to reports Jorge Costa, Jose Mourinho 's Champions League-winning skipper at FC Porto in 2004, has passed away at the tender age of just 53. It's believed Costa, who served as Porto 's director of football, collapsed from a heart attack at the club's Olival training facility according to Portuguese reports. Costa began his footballing journey at Porto and made a remarkable 383 appearances for the club, claiming 24 honours during his time there - including that unforgettable Champions League victory in the 2003-04 season and the UEFA Cup triumph the previous year. He also enjoyed a stint in the Premier League after joining Charlton Athletic on loan during the 2001-02 season. The defender featured 26 times for the Addicks under manager Alan Curbishley. Following his departure from Porto, Costa went on to manage several European sides before returning to his beloved club as director of football last year, reports the Mirror. Porto announced his passing on Tuesday through a heartfelt message on Twitter, describing him as "a symbol" of the institution. "Jorge Costa has left us," their statement declared. "One of us, a leader, captain, example. A symbol of FC Porto. Thank you for being FC Porto until the end. Forever, Jorge Costa." Tributes immediately flooded in from across Portuguese football, with Porto's city rivals Sporting Lisbon also honouring Costa's memory. Their tribute read: "Sporting Clube de Portugal expresses its sorrow for the passing of Jorge Costa, football director of FC Porto and former Portuguese international." Sporting Clube de Portugal has expressed its profound sorrow at the passing of a notable figure in FC Porto and Portuguese football, extending its deepest sympathies to his loved ones. Liga Portugal also conveyed its heartfelt condolences to Costa's family, highlighting the ex-player's "fighting spirit and leadership". The statement read: "In this moment of grief, Liga Portugal extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, FC Porto, and all those who shared his passion for football. Rest in peace." Mourinho reminisced warmly about an incident with Costa, illustrating his remarkable impact as Porto's captain. The former Chelsea manager recounted: "I had captains who were not leaders. I had one at Porto, Jorge Costa. One day, we were losing a match against a team called Belenenses, we were down 2-0 at halftime. "I was walking to the locker room, and everyone saw I was furious. "When I was about to enter, Jorge Costa told me, 'Wait outside for two minutes, please.' He went in, closed the door, and did the dirty work for me. "Then he opened the door and said, 'Coach us.' Because in the locker room, he did everything I would have done. "We won 3-2. He was a centre-back, had never scored goals in his life; that day, he scored two. Captain and leader are very different things. "You can't buy leaders. You can't manufacture leaders. And when you have them, your team is one step ahead."
