Rasmus Hojlund criticised for delaying Man Utd exit by AC Milan legend

Metroa day ago
Former AC Milan and Italy head coach Arrigo Sacchi has criticised Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund for hesitating over a move to the Serie A side.
AC Milan have held talks with United to sign Hojlund on a season-long loan which includes an option to buy.
After completing their £73.7 million move for Benjamin Sesko last weekend, United are open to offloading Hojlund, who scored four goals in the Premier League last season.
However, the 22-year-old has not immediately made it clear that he is open to a return to Italy and has publicly stated that he wants to fight for his place at United.
Sacchi has questioned Hojlund's decision and believes United's stance over his exit should be enough to persuade him to join AC Milan before the end of the summer transfer window.

'We're not talking about van Basten, nor are we talking about one of the strongest centre-forwards in Europe at the moment. He's a decent player, nothing more,' Sacchi told La Gazzetta dello Sport. More Trending
'I understand the desire of the Rossoneri directors given that there is a shortage of strikers. But it has to be one that wants to come to Italy, one that doesn't throw a tantrum.
'I don't understand his choice. If Milan calls you, you pack your bags and get on the first plane to Malpensa.
'Milan, in the world of football, is a mystical name. I, along with all the players who are brought in, would take a tour of the trophy room so that we understand where we have come.
'Of course, Manchester United is also a legendary team. But on the one hand, there is a club, Milan, which is offering you a permanent job, and on the other hand, there is a club that is doing everything to try and sell you. What would you choose?'

Cardiff City turn transfer focus to incomings as rival boss says it felt like Bluebirds 'punched him in face'

Cardiff City turn transfer focus to incomings as rival boss says it felt like Bluebirds 'punched him in face' The latest Bluebirds news from Cardiff City Stadium Ian Holloway, Manager of Swindon Town, gestures to Brian Barry-Murphy, Manager of Cardiff City (Image: Getty Images) Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, August 13. ‌ Cardiff turn focus to incomings After spending so much of this summer focusing on shipping players out and trimming the squad, Cardiff are now zeroing in on landing their targets. ‌ City have let 13 players leave so far this summer, with Jesper Daland in talks over a move away from the club, as revealed by head coach Brian Barry-Murphy last night. Given City have four senior goalkeepers currently in their squad, one suspects at least one of those is likely to leave, too. ‌ However, work continues behind the scenes with regards to incomings. Nothing is done just yet, however sources have told WalesOnline that deals for two targets on their radar are "promising". Barry-Murphy did not give a timeframe with regards to potential incomings, but the Bluebirds head coach insisted that he was confident of incomings before the end of the window. City's backline is in desperate need of bolstering, with a centre-half, left back and possibly even right back on any potential wish list. A winger is also thought to be a position of interest, too. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community. Article continues below Holloway blown away by 'sparkling' Cardiff Swindon Town boss Ian Holloway says he was blown away by Cardiff City and he felt like a boxer who had been repeatedly punched in the face after a blockbuster first half. City defeated Swindon 2-1, but really shone in the first half. Rubin Colwill netted a stunning free-kick after Cian Ashford had tapped home from point-blank range. Ashford should have wrapped it up before the break, too, but he hit the post after Callum Robinson played him through. The Robins came back strongly after the break and halved the deficit, however it was City who advanced through to round two of the Carabao Cup. ‌ Speaking to BBC Radio Wiltshire Sport after the match, former Premier League boss Holloway was stunned by the Bluebirds' play and was effusive in his praise of Barry-Murphy. "I was glad for the second half. And I was glad half-time came when it did. If I was a boxer, I don't think I'd have been punched so many times," he said. "With their shape, their structure, they changed it when we boxed them off. Massive credit to their manager and team to what they did, their patterns. "They changed it so well, we couldn't live with it, with the team I had out there." ‌ He added: "At half-time, if you were a gambler, you'd have bet on us being beaten four, five, maybe even six-nil. But we won the second half 1-0. "I was delighted with the second-half performance. "That was a hell of a learning curve for us, how well they played in the first half. Massive credit to Cardiff. On another day I'd like to play them again, but we've got to earn that right and get up. ‌ "I thought they were terrific first half, sparkling. We couldn't get near them." The former Blackpool boss believes Cardiff are packed with talent and thinks they are on the right track under Brian Barry-Murphy. Holloway added: "Well done to them. Absolutely brilliant way of playing. ‌ "That was an absolutely wonderful free-kick and it absolutely knocked the stuffing out of us. They were very unlucky not to score, although I thought they were offside. "Well done to Cardiff. I'm not taking anything away from them, it's a wonderful way of playing. "You don't expect that from a team who have just got relegated. So, well done to Brian and his team. They've got some severe talent." ‌ Colwill: We had to learn quickly after Port Vale disappointment Rubin Colwill said the players had to work hard and learn the lessons after a disappointing league outing against Port Vale last Thursday. The Bluebirds were held to a goalless stalemate away from home, but the performance arguably warranted a defeat. They bounced back and performed well against Swindon, though, albeit they are in a division below City, with Colwill netting again with a wonderful free-kick. ‌ 'I think we had a lot of things to take away from the game against Port Vale," he said "There's lots to learn, but we tried to put those things right tonight, the way we moved the ball, switching it and getting them moving, trying to create space so we can be better when we're trying to attack. So, there's lots to work on, lots to try and adjust and I thought we did that pretty well tonight. 'We come in every day, we learn and work hard. All you want as a footballer is to come in and see there's a plan of what to do and what we're working towards, and then it's up to you to put the work in and see if you can achieve that.' ‌ Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes the vice-captaincy will do Colwill a world of good this season and hopes the Wales international can start taking games "by the scruff of the neck" as he is beginning to show already. "There's a phrase, 'One swallow doesn't make a summer', and one good game doesn't make a player. But I loved his free-kick against Peterborough, it was great technique," Goodman told "We need more of that from him. Not necessarily the free kick, but the performance, because he's an unbelievable talent who has been unbelievably inconsistent in his short career so far. But he's 23 now and has over 150 appearances for Cardiff City. Article continues below "Brian Barry-Murphy gave the players a vote on who they wanted to be captain, and as the vice captain, they voted for Rubin Colwill. That's a massive vote of confidence and respect from your own team-mates. It could act as extra motivation that will make him feel a need to get Cardiff back to the Championship. But he needs to find that consistency, week in, week out. "At League One level, he has to take those games by the scruff of the neck and really influence them, just the way he did vs Peterborough." Tottenham icon makes Mikel Arteta sack prediction if Arsenal finish second again

Teddy Sheringham has predicted that Arsenal will not sack their manager Mikel Arteta if the club finish second in the Premier League in 2025-26. The Tottenham icon, who conjured up 125 goals and 52 assists in 277 games for Spurs, will 'laugh his head off' if Arsenal miss out the title again. But Sheringham is adamant the Gunners will not part ways with Arteta if they finish as top-flight runners-up for the fourth season in a row this term. Arsenal haven't been crowed champions of England since 2004 and Sheringham has thanked Liverpool, Manchester City and God for ensuring that the Gunners' Premier League trophy drought is still going on. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. 'I will laugh my head off if that's the case (if Arsenal finish second again),' Sheringham told Snabbare. 'But no – I don't think that would be the end for Mikel Arteta. I think Arsenal are in a very good place. 'You talk about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finishing second and where Manchester United were as a club were then, if you look at Arsenal and where they're at now, I hate to say it but I think they're very, very close to being the number one team. 'Thank God we've had Manchester City and Liverpool around over the last few years to keep them where they are but they're not far off it. 'They've got Viktor Gyokeres, this new striker, and he is obviously going to be the focal point of their team, but let's hope they finish second.' Discounting Community Shields, which are just one-off matches, Arteta has landed just one trophy since he became Arsenal boss in 2019 – the FA Cup five years ago. Former Arsenal midfielder Anders Limpar has labelled criticism of Arteta as 'outrageous' and says the Gunners could win a treble this season. 'If you look at the whole team sheet, they (Arsenal) have an amazing team,' he told 'I mean, come on, they can win the treble next year with a team like this. 'They definitely have one of the best teams if everything goes well, because the squad is truly unbelievable. It's mind-blowing. All of those players could play for any team in England. More Trending 'This is the best Arsenal team since the Invincibles. Arsenal were really good in the 90s but we now have a dream team again. They now need to win trophies but they're not far from winning due to the players at the club. 'It is outrageous that Arsenal have been criticised for not winning trophies. 'In my opinion, Arteta is up there among the best managers in the world for what he has done for Arsenal, but I hope for him that he can win a couple of trophies this season. 'A Premier League title or a Champions League final would be unbelievable, and I have 100% faith in Arteta and he has an amazing squad now.' Mikel Merino reveals what's surprised him about Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres

Mikel Merino says Viktor Gyokeres has already 'surprised' him with his 'off-the-pitch' work at Arsenal and predicts the striker will be a 'massive player' for the club. Arsenal's hierarchy faced criticism from fans and pundits alike for failing to bring in an out-and-out centre-forward as the club went a fifth successive season without winning a major trophy last term. But Mikel Arteta made it clear that Arsenal were in the market for a genuine number nine at the start of the summer transfer window and the Gunners finally got their man last month. Manchester United provided strong competition in the race for Gyokeres' signature, with Ruben Amorim keen to be reunited with the prolific Swede following a wretched campaign at Old Trafford. But Gyokeres turned down his former Sporting manager in favour of a £64million switch to the Emirates and the 27-year-old has committed his future to the north Londoners until 2030. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – sign up, it's an open goal. Gyokeres took Portuguese football by storm with his extraordinary goalscoring exploits at Sporting, netting 97 times in 102 appearances for the Primeira Liga outfit across his two years in Lisbon. And while there have been some questions about Gyokeres' capacity to step up and replicate his form in the Premier League arena, Merino has no doubt his new team-mate has what it takes to succeed. 'With every player in the squad, you have to adapt to the principles that the team have already and, at the same time, us as players have to adapt to the team-mate and the qualities and the capacities they have,' Merino told TNT Sports ahead of Arsenal's opening match of the season against Manchester United. 'Obviously, Viktor, being such a good striker with his own tools, he's going to be a massive player for us so we'll have to adapt to his qualities, try to find him in the right spots. 'And also for him, he'll have to adapt to our values, to our principles and I'm sure it's going to be a good relationship there.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Merino – who filled in as a false nine for Arsenal last season – has been taken aback by Gyokeres' attitude and work ethic since arriving at the club. Asked what the Sweden international will add to Arsenal's squad, Merino replied: 'Hopefully loads of goals! That's what he does. 'He's an amazing striker. He's strong, quick, he can threaten in the back of the line as well so that's the main thing in terms of off the pitch. 'But I'm more surprised about off-the-pitch stuff. He's a professional guy, really humble and he's already adapting and ready to learn. 'He's always with the eyes open so those are good qualities for a striker to have.' Another new face in Arsenal's squad this summer is Martin Zubimendi, who joined the Gunners in a £60m move from Real Sociedad. Merino has already shared a pitch with Zubimendi at both club and international level and is glad to see his fellow countryman 'adapting really well' in his new environment. 'He's an amazing player and he's a good friend of mine as well so I hope for the best for him, always,' Merino said of Zubimendi. 'He's has proved himself here already in a couple of games how good he is and he's adapting really well. 'He's learning the language but I think the most important language he knows already and it's with the ball, communication with the team-mates. 'Everyone loves him around here so he has adapted really well and hopefully will play a huge role.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
