4 killed, many injured in clashes between Bangladeshi forces and ex-PM Hasina's supporters
The violence erupted in the morning and spread as a new political party formed by students who led the uprising against Hasina in August last year announced a march toward southwestern Gopalganj district, Hasina's ancestral home, and her Awami League party's stronghold.
Authorities later imposed an overnight curfew in the district.
Since Hasina's ouster 11 months ago, Bangladesh has been marked by chaos and unchecked mob violence. Wednesday's attack underscores the deep divisions in the country as its interim government keeps failing to bring the deteriorating security situation under control.
A chaotic situation
TV footage showed pro-Hasina activists armed with sticks attacking police and setting vehicles on fire as a convoy of about 20 vehicles carrying the leaders of the students' National Citizen Party arrived as part of commemorations of the uprising.
Party leaders took shelter in the office of the local police chief. Footage showed top leaders were being escorted by soldiers to an armored vehicle for safety. They later left for a neighboring district with security escorts.

Over 70,000 Form-6 applications have been submitted on average in the last week, a sharp rise from the usual 20,000-25,000, especially in Coochbehar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, North Dinajpur, Murshidabad, Nadia, and North & South 24 Parganas districts. This surge, coupled with reports of Domicile Certificates being issued by the West Bengal Administration, raises serious concerns about the State Govt's unethical and illegal efforts in order to facilitate the legitimizing of the infiltrating Rohingya Muslims and illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, with the aim to manipulate our Voter Lists." In a letter to CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Ashikari said that a significant and troubling rise in Form-6 applications across several border districts in West Bengal has triggered alarm bells over potential attempts to manipulate the state's voter rolls. "Over the past week alone, more than 70,000 applications have reportedly been submitted on average--an almost threefold increase compared to the usual 20,000-25,000 per week. The districts witnessing this unprecedented surge include Coochbehar, Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, Maldah, North Dinajpur, Murshidabad, Nadia, and both North and South 24 Parganas," the letter added.
