George Lucas to attend Comic-Con for first time
Other expected highlights of the gathering - one of the world's biggest celebrations of pop culture - include the world premiere of the prequel series Alien: Earth.
Comic-Con began holding events in San Diego in 1970, as a low-key and rather niche huddle, but has now grown to an annual get-together that attracts 130,000 people eager to hear behind-the-scenes tidbits from Hollywood stars and directors unveiling their latest projects.
This year's edition will be marked by the presence of legendary filmmaker Lucas, who has never visited the convention before despite Comic-Con culture being deeply rooted in his Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.
In a session on Sunday set to be moderated by Queen Latifah, Lucas will discuss the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art with Mexican director Guillermo del Toro and Oscar-winning artist Doug Chiang, who has shaped the iconic Star Wars universe for decades.
The museum, scheduled to open in Los Angeles next year, will be dedicated to illustrated narratives and will house the Lucas archive.
"Nearly five decades ago, Star Wars made one of its earliest public appearances at our convention, along with a booth featuring (comic book artist) Howard Chaykin's now legendary Star Wars poster as a promotional item," said David Glanzer, Chief Communications and Strategy Officer.
"Now, to have Mr Lucas... is a true full-circle moment. His lifelong dedication to visual storytelling and world-building resonates deeply with us and our community."
Marvel Studios will have a smaller presence at the convention this year, skipping its eagerly awaited annual presentation in Hall H.
According to Variety, changes to the premiere of the new Avengers installment complicated logistics for the studio, whose cast is currently filming in Britain.
Despite this notable absence, events at coveted Hall H still promise great excitement for fans of science fiction, a core genre of the convention.
On Friday, it will host the world premiere of the pilot episode of the prequel Alien: Earth, directed by Noah Hawley and slated to hit streaming platforms in August.
The series takes place a couple of years before the events depicted in Ridley Scott's 1979 film Alien, offering an expansion of the venerated franchise.
Another fan favourite that will have its moment in the spotlight is Predator: Badlands, with a panel Friday set to include director Dan Trachtenberg, who revitalised the brand with Prey (2022).

Peacemaker season 2 trailer reveals John Cena versus alternate self and viral Dirty Dancing tribute
San Diego Comic-Con got a dose of peace on Saturday as John Cena appeared in full costume for HBO Max's Peacemaker Season 2 panel in Hall H. He was joined by series creator and DC Studios co-chair James Gunn, along with cast members Frank Grillo, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows. The panel debuted the new Season 2 trailer, which shows Peacemaker traveling through a portal to an alternate dimension where 'the grass is greener.' Rejected by Holland's Emilia Harcourt, he escapes into this new universe, triggering inter-dimensional chaos. Grillo's Rick Flag Sr., head of the covert A.R.G.U.S., searches for Peacemaker after he killed his son Rick Flag Jr. in The Suicide Squad. The panel also revealed changes to the series' iconic opening credits, which went viral in Season 1 for its quirky dance number. Gunn explained, 'We're not trying to one-up it. It's bigger and has a different vibe — new characters, new dancers.' Jennifer Holland shared that the Season 2 routine pays homage to Dirty Dancing. 'I asked the universe to let me do the lift,' she said. 'And I got to do it — it's amazing.' Grillo added with a laugh, 'I started off reluctantly dancing, and now I'm the best dancer on stage.' Season 2 of Peacemaker premieres Aug. 21 on HBO Max and will include eight episodes. It arrives more than three years after the first season, during which Gunn and Peter Safran became DC Studios' co-CEOs, rebooting the franchise with Superman and Creature Commandos. Cena reprises his role as the ultra-patriotic mercenary Christopher Smith, introduced in 2021's The Suicide Squad. Most recently, Peacemaker appeared in Gunn's Superman as a guest on a conservative talk show.

‘Predator: Badlands' propels predator perspective at Comic-Con
SAN DIEGO: The latest movie in the 'Predator' series flips the script to focus on the bad guys who always lose to the humans in the end, director Dan Trachtenberg said on Friday. 'The predator never wins,' Trachtenberg told an audience at San Diego Comic-Con after footage of 'Predator: Badlands' debuted at the convention's Disney panel. This, the 'Prey' director said, inspired him to tell the story from the predator species perspective in 'Badlands,' the seventh in the main movie series, dating back to the 1987 hit starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the ninth across the franchise. It was key, Trachtenberg said, for him to explore a different aspect of the 'Predator' world for this science fiction movie, developed by 20th Century Studios and landing in theaters on November 7. 'There are no humans in this film,' said cast member Elle Fanning, discussing the challenges of learning the logistics of a completely fictional realm. 'Project Hail Mary' sends Ryan Gosling, and Comic-Con, into outer space The biggest challenge was mastering the fictional Yautja language, said Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, who stars as Dek, a young predator on a solo mission in a treacherous land of even bigger predators. He bonds with an android named Thia, played by Fanning. Dek is 'ferocious and badass, very much an anti-hero,' Trachtenberg said. Before the panel discussion with the director and several cast members, the audience got a glimpse of a Yautja-speaking predator prowling the stage with the signature glowing weaponry as stirring music played.

‘Project Hail Mary' sends Ryan Gosling, and Comic-Con, into outer space
SAN DIEGO: Comic-Con attendees got their first glimpse Saturday at the new sci-fi space thriller 'Project Hail Mary,' starring Ryan Gosling, ahead of its arrival in US theaters in March 2026. Gosling was joined on a convention panel by directing duo Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, as well as screenwriter Drew Goddard and book author Andy Weir – whose previous novel 'The Martian' was also turned into an Oscar-nominated film starring Matt Damon. Based on Weir's 2021 book of the same title, 'Project Hail Mary' follows astronaut Ryland Grace (Gosling), a science teacher waking up to learn he was recruited for a space mission to save Earth from an existential solar threat. Gosling described his character as 'a scared guy who has to do something impossible.' 'I knew it would be brilliant, because it's Andy [Weir],' Gosling told the crowd. 'It took me places I've never been. It showed me things I had never seen. It was as heartbreaking as it was funny and I was… not just blown away, but also overwhelmed.' Weir for his part said it was 'so cool' to see his book come to life and complimented Gosling for giving 'many layers to this character I made up.' Lord and Miller, the Oscar-winning duo behind the 'Spider-Verse' Spider-Man animated films, talked about the challenges of shooting a 'crazy ambitious' film which takes place inside a spaceship for the most part. 'We had to build an entire spaceship in two modes of gravity, and then we built this entire massive tunnel at scale,' Miller said. 'This is insane, to build a tunnel that was like 100 feet (30 meters) long, filled up an entire stage.' The event also showcased various clips from the film, receiving a positive response from fans, who noted the bond formed between Gosling's character and an alien named Rocky. 'The relationship between these two characters is the heart of the movie,' Miller said. 'I loved it,' attendee April Rodriguez, who also read the book, gushed about the film. 'I just never, like, envisioned it that way. So that was pretty cool.' Star Trek Comic-Con, which bring some 130,000 fans for the convention in San Diego, California, welcomed the Star Trek universe to the main stage earlier in the day Saturday to showcase its upcoming releases. Thousands of fans filled the hall to watch exclusive footage from the fourth season of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' before it premieres on Paramount+. One clip showed Captain Christopher Pike played by Anson Mount in an entire episode where the cast is depicted like puppets from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Fans dive into San Diego Comic-Con despite drop in celebrity panels Fans were also offered a first look of a new Star Trek series, dubbed 'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' starring Holly Hunter. Hunter plays Nahla Ake, the academy's chancellor and captain of the USS Athena, who in a clip shown at Comic-Con welcomes a new class of cadets. 'It was really interesting to get the offer to be the captain, but then also to combine that with being the chancellor,' Hunter said. 'The captain is there to analyze in emergency situations, and then to delegate. And the chancellor is there to guide, to collaborate and to have tremendous empathy. 'It was just a wonderful combination of things,' she added. Comic-Con continues on Sunday for its final day of events.
